Bachelor of Sport (Coaching, Management, Physical Education)

Emma Haigh

Active Communities Advisor, Sport Waitakere

Bachelor of Sport (Management) graduate
I love that I have the ability to change peoples lives! I use sport and physical activity as a vehicle for improving the lives of so many, in particular those that are not sport-oriented. My role is very strategic, and I have the opportunity to have ownership of my work. Im on the road daily, meeting with community members and encouraging communities to become more active. In this role you have to be empathetic to those in the community doing the hard yards. The foundation knowledge that the Bachelor of Sport provided was invaluable to getting me where I am today. I didnt expect to enjoy the programme so much, but the environment the Department of Sport created made each class a pleasure. The lecturers and administration staff were so friendly and supportive that nothing was too much trouble. They treat you with respect and encourage you all the way.

"I use sport and physical activity as a vehicle for improving the lives of so many."

Harry Aonga

Drowning Prevention Coordinator, WaterSafe Auckland

Bachelor of Sport (Physical Education)
"I've always been passionate about sport and thought it would be a great idea to pursue a career in this industry. I enjoyed my time at Unitec and would like to thank the lecturers and staff who supported me throughout my learning. Im now working for WaterSafe Auckland, specifically taking care of Mori and Pacific Island communities within Auckland because theyre identified as a high-risk group for drowning. My primary role is to educate these communities on how to be safer around water. I've been in this role for 10 months, and I'm enjoying the challenges this job provides each day. The most rewarding part is being able to influence positive behaviour change through educating these communities about water safety. It could potentially save someones life."

Duncan Hodgson

Fitness Coordinator, Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust

Diploma in Sport and Fitness Education graduate
I love the work I do I get to experience a lot of cool things and work with a great bunch of people! Being involved in the Chopper Challenge and Corporate Chopper Challenge boot camps is so rewarding. Participants are challenged to train for a fitness test based on the test undertaken by the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew, modified to suit the age group of the challengees. Participants are encouraged to ask friends and family to sponsor their Chopper Challenge to raise funds for the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust. The top fundraisers will be awarded with a once-ina-lifetime reward a flight to school in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter! I like seeing the kids faces light up in amazement as the Westpac Chopper flies in low over their school and lands in the middle of the school field. The clients who do our boot camps get a lot out of it, with many returning for a second round because they enjoyed it so much. My Unitec qualification is so relevant for what I do now. I wouldnt be in the job I am in without the background knowledge I learned at Unitec.

Cole Hunter

Operations Coordinator, Vector Arena

Bachelor of Sport (Management) graduate
I love working at Vector Arena! Ive now had the chance to work on a variety of community, cultural, religious, sporting and music events; each with its own challenges. Some of the highlights so far were working on the 2007 World Netball Championships at The Trusts Stadium and at both of the Metallica shows at Vector Arena. Both were the highest capacity shows at the Arena, with 12,200 people at each show! I like that my job is constantly challenging. Each show is the culmination of a lot of hard work, and you can see that come to fruition on a weekly basis. Through my job I also had the opportunity to tour some of the best venues in Australasia and to study at the Public Venue Management School. Next, I plan to take my experience overseas and hopefully work in some of the best venues around the world. The wide range of classes I took at Unitec has given me a broad range of knowledge, which is very handy for my job now. You can use the first year of the Bachelor of Sport to decide what pathway you want to take coaching, management or physical education. There were also plenty of opportunities to further your education outside the classroom through placements and learning experiences.
