He will never allow you to be tempted greater than you can bear up. putting me in the ministry. I consider Timothy faithful. if I do not keep my word.” If I’m going to be like God. if I can’t be counted on. 1 Timothy 1:12 “I thank Christ Jesus our Lord that He considered me faithful. Matthew 25:45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant. The opposite is true. it causes problems.” He’s saying that unfaithful people are a pain in the blessed assurance. The Bible says. IT GUARANTEES GOD’S BLESSING ON MY LIFE This is the secret of blessing. Proverbs 25:19 “Like a bad tooth or a lame foot is reliance on the unfaithful in times of trouble. I’m not getting strokes. when you’re on stage. Be faithful in the little things. you shouldn’t live for the strokes of other people. “I’m ready to take the reins. you need to demonstrate your faithfulness. If you want to know the secret of getting God’s blessing on your life. This is indication of a leadership role. If I’m not faithful it produces problems in my life. He’s saying that unfaithfulness causes problems. What counts is not what you are up in front. just be faithful.” He gave him a position of leadership because he had proved himself faithful. you may have been the chairman of an elder board.” God does. “The ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord and He pondereth all his goings.” Both of these verses mention “placed in charge” or “charge over”.” God sees everything that’s going on in your life and my life and He says faithfulness produces blessing. Many times you think.” I think. You may have been a pastor in another church. What counts is your private life. does that cause problems? When you don’t show up. I’m ready to assume a leadership role. Superman is here. Before you can be a leader. In fact. “A faithful man will be richly blessed. does that cause problems? It guarantees God’s blessing on my life. You put in an order with the waitress and it comes and it’s the wrong order or there’s a delay. “Nobody sees what I’m doing for the Lord. You shouldn’t live for the applause and approval of other people because the Bible says. when it gives the qualifications of a deacon or a servant of the church “He must first be proven” He must have track record. Nobody cares. In contrast. Once in a while I meet somebody on the patio and the first week they come and they immediately give the impression. Nobody appreciates me. It guarantees God’s blessing on my life. I’d say if you look at many of the problems we have in life a lot of them have to do with this lack of dependability. Maybe they don’t show up. in public. you may have taught for 27 years but you don’t have a track 7 . FAITHFULNESS PREPARES ME FOR LEADERSHIP ROLES Nehemiah 7:2 “I gave Hannani [who was Nehemiah’s brother] charge over Jerusalem for he was a faithful man [underline “faithful man”] and he feared God above many. Nobody knows what I’m doing. 4. You expect the repairman to show up at a certain time and he doesn’t show. Have no fear. When people don’t show up in your group. Waiting and delay. You have no track record with us. Wait a minute. The solution has arrived for Saddleback. You’re ticked! You expect the paperboy to give you the paper every night and it’s not and you’re upset. It doesn’t matter. When people are undependable. I think one way God teaches us patience is if you’ve ever had to be in a car pool with anybody.3. He is the one whom his master has placed in charge of the other servants.” That’s a promise of God. Inconsistency produces irritation.
There are about 5-6 different parables at least in the New Testament where faithfulness is the essential theme.” You did your best. you gave it your best shot. You tried. The guy with one talent went and buried it in a hole. “I can’t do everything therefore I’ll do nothing. if I can’t do it perfectly. Come and share your master’s happiness. If I can’t do it perfectly. I want you to get the message so I’m going to repeat this different ways. You embarrassed yourself. I just won’t do it. You’ve been faithful with a few things. Jesus tells this parable. I could say. And throw that worthless servant outside into the darkness. Whoever does not have. but you were faithful. even what he has will be taken from him. given those parameters. One guy went out and doubled his talent. 8 . I just won’t do it. God can overlook my ignorance and God can overlook my lack of talents. How faithful am I with the circumstances. die and the next second go into the presence of God and have Matthew 25:21 applied to me.” If you want a goal for life. So very few of us can do anything perfectly. “If it’s worth doing. He’s saying that faithfulness prepares me for leadership. You weren’t perfect. You had setbacks. Notice what He says about it. I want to get to the end of my life. In Matthew 25:14-27. it’s worth doing perfectly. 28 “Take the talent from him [who hadn’t been faithful] and give it to the one who has ten talents. it’s worth doing poorly. But what He does not overlook is what I do with what I’ve got. The Bible says to look for faithfulness. Some things you just have to do and you do it out of faithfulness. well done good and faithful servant. Matthew 25:21 “His master replied. make it Matthew 25:21. v. given my spiritual gifts. usually that the person with minimum or average talent is often the least faithful.” I have a philosophy: If it’s worth doing. That’s how serious God considers the element of faithfulness. If I can’t do it spectacularly. 5. The point there is. He says my ministry. The Bible says that we will be rewarded in heaven according to our faithfulness. given my background. There are some things I have to do that’s I’m not good at. my life is worthless if it has not been faithful to what God has asked me to do. They say. my talent. You made mistakes. There is no more worthy goal in life than to stand before Jesus Christ and have Him say some day. but sometimes I have to change a tire. I’m not good at car repair. what do I do with what I’ve got? The issue that God judges more than anything else in the life of a believer is faithfulness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Everyone who has will be given more and he will have abundance. my temperament – given all those things we talk about in 301 how God has SHAPED me. They think. I have no right to assume any leadership role unless I have a track record. another guy went out and doubled his talent. FAITHFULNESS WILL BE REWARDED IN HEAVEN. thou good and faithful servant. a legitimate life purpose.record here. not out of expertise. “Well done. like a professional. And that’s what counts. The phrase. He says it over and over again that God looks at faithfulness. I will put you in charge of many things. therefore I’ll never change a tire. Jesus said.” has caused more people to set on the sidelines than practically any other phrase.” That’s strong stuff.
He’s saying that what we have to realize is there is more to life than just the accumulation of things. if that’s the issue that God is looking at and He says it five or six different times in the parables. we’re to live. HE OR SHE HAS RIGHT VALUES.I said all that to say this: If it is true that we’re going to be rewarded in heaven according to our faithfulness. You ought to be highly interested in what I’m about to share because this is what you will be evaluated on. but on faithfulness. Faithfulness is proven by our refusal to buy into the system that says the almighty buck is the number one thing in life. 1. The one with the most toys at the end wins. philosophy. save all you can. But if all your time and energy is going in to making a buck. A faithful person knows what’s important in life and what isn’t important in life. You know there are many people in the church who have the background and qualifications to be lay pastors and they’re not here this morning because “I’m too busy. You’re going to stand before God one day and He’s going to evaluate your faithfulness. then I’d better start preparing for the final exam. I’ve got myself in over my head and my expenses are so high that we have to hustle just to make ends meet and we don’t have time for ministry. How do you judge that? There’s no standard. I could go through a lot of verses on that. you’re not being faithful.” This contrasts faithfulness with a desire to get rich quick. A faithful person makes their life count. Faithfulness is proven by a choosing of a simplified lifestyle in order to have more time for ministry. Yet we live in a materialistic world where the soul goal of life for most people is the accumulation of things. II. A faithful person knows how to invest his or her life and how not to.” What am I too busy for? I’m too busy making a buck. What’s simple for one person may not be simple for another. if the basis for my rewards in heaven is not based on my talent or my background or what I accomplished. I’m going to give you a sneak peek at the final exam. He’s not talking about making money. if you take the context around it.” But this is talking about get rich quick schemes. It compares the consuming desire to make a buck as being the primary goal in life with faithfulness. The Bible says that like fish swimming upstream in a very materialistic world. A faithful person knows the significant from the trivial. Proverbs 28:20 “A faithful man will be richly blessed but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished. How do I prepare myself for this final exam so that I can stand before God and have Him say “Well done thou good and faithful servant”? The Bible teaches very clearly you do it eight ways. The Bible says that’s unfaithfulness. He’s going to look at eight different aspects of your life to judge your faithfulness. 9 . In fact. CHARACTERISTICS OF A FAITHFUL PERSON – the Eight things God is going to evaluate to judge your faithfulness. That’s their whole purpose. The Bible teaches you to earn all you can. give all you can. the Bible says “He who does not provide for his family is worse than an infidel.
There are lots of ways to be unfaithful. The Bible teaches that faithfulness is a choice. my hurts. I’d go out and become a millionaire. I can choose to change my attitude so that the focus gets off myself and what’s best for me and instead say. my ambitions.” How would you like that for a recommendation. it’s an issue of selfishness. He’s in God’s Who’s Who. He simply said you can’t serve God and money at the same time. my desires.” When two selfish people get together their needs and interests clash and all kinds of marriage problems are the result. I’d think up some way to become a millionaire. For everyone looks out for his own interest and not those of Jesus Christ. What’s in it for me? God says faithfulness is proven by our other-directedness and by giving our life away. Did we care about the relationships of others and not just our own relationships? A great example is Timothy. my values. Their job is their mistress. But the truth is. my benefit?” It’s very selfish. but one day they will stand before Jesus Christ and He’ll say “Let’s look at your values. What counts is lives of people. The reason I can be so adamant about this is because Jesus put it in black and white terms. 10 . “I have no one like Timothy. “Only by pride cometh contention. I’d go out and with the background and education I have and with enough energy. They’re being unfaithful because they’re thinking of themselves rather than others. But Timothy has proved himself. on your resume – “The Apostle Paul said there’s nobody like me”? That’s a pretty good recommendation. Did you have time to do anything for Me or in serving others or was all your time spent in the eagerness to get rich?” Luke 16:13. by looking at others rather than concentrating on our own self. This issue (to summarize the marriage series) this is the real issue in marriage problems: I want my own way.” Everyone else looks out for his own interest. That’s better than being in Who’s Who. “I have no one like Timothy who takes a genuine interest in your welfare. When you boil it down. my goals. “What’s best for others? What’s best for my kids? What’s best for my wife?” When you accepted a wedding ring you made a vow of faithfulness. The Bible says that the second way God is going to judge our faithfulness is our relationship to other people. I’m being unloving. I know a lot of guys and a lot of ladies who are in love with their career. He says there’s nobody else like Timothy. Paul says. H e has served with me in the work of the Gospel. When I’m being unreliable. I’m not to judge them. NOT JUST HIS OR HER OWN. I wouldn’t be a pastor. But that’s not the important value in life. you don’t have to commit adultery to be unfaithful to your mate. my profit. A FAITHFUL PERSON CARES FOR OTHERS’ INTEREST. This is an incredible verse. The Apostle Paul said. Contemporary culture says “What’s in it for me? What’s my needs. 2. He gives him carte blanche. What’s the key? “He takes a genuine interest in your welfare. self-centered. God says faithfulness swims against the stream of contemporary culture. That’s pretty strong. If money were the important value in my life.” Philippians 2:20-22.
He was faithful and honest and made no mistakes. have a mind of an elephant. This is a practical example of faithfulness. HIS PROMISES. When He evaluates our faithfulness. HE OR SHE LIVES A LIFE OF INTEGRITY BEFORE THE UNBELIEVING WORLD. He maintained a blameless testimony. a satrap (what they call them in Persia).” How would you like to have that kind of reputation at work? They couldn’t find anything to criticize about him. As a parent. Daniel 6:4 (Living Bible). He’s going to look at all the promises we made. He’s saying be careful about what you promise.3. Success. and what that does to the cause of Christ. We’ve seen when somebody in the ministry has a bad reputation with unbelievers and it’s spread out all over the newspaper. I’ll do it later … I’ll pray for you … “ those kind of things. spotless. but I’m going to look at. In other words. and the other governors were very jealous. God says when I want to look and see your faithfulness. Did you do your best at work? Are you responsible for hiring people? When you hire somebody one of the main things you look for is faithfulness. The best example I can think of here is Daniel. but what do unbelievers think about me? It’s interesting that the Bible teaches that a pastor is to be above reproach in the community. in my book. That ought to put us in holy terror. 4. This is talking about unbelievers who were peers of Daniel. “They were jealous and began searching for some fault in the way Daniel was handling his affairs so that they could complain to the king about him. They never forget. he is to have a good reputation. It’s those things on your desk you know you need to get to but you keep putting off. I’ll return it as soon as I’m through with it …. The check’s in the mail …. you know you often make promises in moments of weakness – just to get the kids to stop pestering you. “I’ll get back to you…. I think what this verse is saying is that Christians should have the reputation of being the most dependable people in the market. when it comes to promises. Are they going to be loyal? Are they trustworthy? Can you trust them with this responsibility? We need to ask ourselves. I’m going to look at not the testimony you give when it’s testimony time at church or in a small group. But they couldn’t find anything to criticize. You know why. the three biggest gifts did not come through. The Bible says be faithful in the little things.” The very first campaign we had for fund raising for land. He had been appointed a governor. a mark of faithfulness is what kind of testimony do I have with unbelievers? Not what do believers think about me. Not with believers. I’ve learned that’s fatal! Many times I’ve made promises to my kids and it does not even register with me consciously. Am I faithful in the little things at work? Most of us have a guilt pile. But my kids. A FAITHFUL PERSON KEEPS HIS WORD. Proverbs 25:14 “Like clouds and wind without rain is a man who boasts of gifts that he does not give. but with unbelievers. God gives you greater responsibilities and you grow. is simply being faithful in the little things. The guy was blemish-less. 11 . When you’re faithful in the little things.
“I really don’t want to do this. people are getting cheated. They’re sitting in the bleachers.” Have you ever made a promise and then thought. Just because we can’t do the spectacular doesn’t excuse us from doing nothing.” Or “I promise on a stack of Bibles. Promises to repair the faucet. What promises do I need to keep? Promises to spend more time with the kids. stick a needle in my eye.” If you want to have strong self-esteem. That’s not faithfulness. “Let your yea. how do you administer your gifts? For one thing. Keep on doing what you’re doing. God has made an investment in your life and He expects a return on it. “We won’t be in church today because we’ve decided to spend another day in Las Vegas. the key is to keep your word. We need to ask ourselves. 1 Peter 4:10 “Each should use whatever spiritual gift he has received to serve others faithfully.” They’d call at the last minute. I realize I’m preaching to the choir today. We’ve had people call from Las Vegas and said. God says that counts. using the gifts and the talents God has given you – natural talents He’s given you. It’s easier to get into a relationship than out of a relationship.” You would not believe the excuses we’ve had from people on Sunday morning who at the last minute didn’t want to do a Sunday School class or be an usher or greeter or whatever. You keep your promises.” I did a whole sermon on this verse one time – “It’s Easier To Get In Than Get Out. develop. It’s the people who aren’t here that need this verse. Faithfulness is based on what we do with what we have. you do it. You’ll be a man/woman of your word. The Bible is saying that faithfulness is a matter of if you say it.” Jesus said. 5. Take a vacation. There’s a tremendous emphasis on this in the Bible. if I’m not using the spiritual gifts God has given me.Proverbs 20:25 “It is a trap to dedicate something rashly and only later consider your vow. people are getting cheated. You don’t need this verse.” but you do it anyway. you keep getting trained. a basic heart motivation – all those things we talk about in 301. By the way. you don’t say things like “Cross my heart. I’ll do it. when you’re dependable. 12 . I won’t. Whatever. They’re pew warmers. God wants us to develop and use our gifts.” It’s easier to get in debt than to get out of debt – that’s making a promise to pay. Psalm 15:4-5 “Whoever does what he promises no mater how much it may cost will always be secure. “Yes. I’m not responsible to sing like Rick Muchow – I can’t. It’s easier to fill up your schedule than it is to fulfill your schedule. The number one cause of resentment are unfulfilled promises. be yea and your nea be nea. If you’re not using the spiritual gifts God has given you. That’s faithfulness.” or “No. “What did you do with what you were given?” I warmed the pew! God says we’re to faithfully administer – use. One day they’re going to have to stand before a Holy God and God is going to say.” A Christian ought to be able to just say. I think that many people in our church should be very frightened by this verse.” Notice it says if you don’t use your spiritual gift (to serve others).
We spend all our lives trying to make it. faithfully. save it.” That’s faithfulness. I need to ask myself. 13 . “on every Sunday.” He’s talking about giving consistently. We need to take a vacation. which are notorious for being the season for unfaithfulness. A FAITHFUL PERSON MANAGES HIS MONEY WELL When you get to heaven.” You say you only get paid once a month so you give once a month. affects what God is able to do in your life. I don’t know if I would have remembered to take my offering envelopes with me on vacation. The Bible is very clear about that. It’s a test of faithfulness. I received an airmail letter from Austria. And it would have been the exact same amount. God says that how we handle our money is a test of faithfulness. They could have given it all up front or all when they got back. I want to make a point here. They pulled out their three envelopes from their three Sundays they were going to be gone and paid extra postage to send it from Austria to the United States. spend it. It says. 1 Corinthians 16:2 “On every Sunday each of you should put aside something of which you’ve earned during the week and use it for an offering. That is faithfulness. God has made money the acid test of faithfulness. But I figured out how much I made and I give it weekly. This was something God has convicted me of just in the last year. Let’s don’t go to SALT this month. It was from one of our members. We are going into the summer months. but I want to challenge you to take your tithe and divide it up so that you give it weekly rather than biweekly or monthly. So much of our life revolves around it. But what they said was. your worldly wealth. but the Bible says that God is going to judge us on our faithfulness and if training is there let’s be faithful to it. How you handle your money is a test of faithfulness. who will trust you with true riches. Let’s cancel the group. It’s summertime. The first day of every week I give the first part of my money to the Lord. even though they were spending three weeks in Europe. Circle “every”. I understand.” God is saying that the way that you handle your finances. accumulate it. even when we’re on vacation we put You first. who is going to trust us with true riches. “Do I pay my bills on time? Do I live within my budget? Am I consistent in tithing? How does my giving compare with my spending?
