(6 marks) The slave masters found it necessary to control the enslaved Africans on the Caribbean sugar plantation because:  The slave masters wanted to prevent the slaves from revolting against themselves and the whites especially because they out-numbered them.  They wanted to prevent the slaves from stealing their sugar cane, rum, and molasses to sell it because these were the white’s main source of income and if the slaves were allowed to sell these products they would steal from the whites to make more money.  The slave masters controlled the slaves to prevent them from running away or plan escape methods because without the slaves there would be no plantation.

(10 marks) Three methods of slave control employed by the master on a Caribbean sugar plantation were:  Legal methods- These were the laws that were made explaining how the slaves were to be treated on the plantation. Some of these laws were pertaining to marriage where in some Caribbean territories such as the Spanish West Indies allowed the slaves to marry without the owner’s consent while in the French West Indies they could marry only with

manumission.  In the British West Indies the English laws stated that baptism among the slaves was strictly forbidden while in the Spanish West Indian Caribbean the all slaves were to be baptised.  In the British West Indies the English laws stated that no slave could be married on the plantation while in the Spanish West Indies the laws permitted the slaves the right to marry without the owner’s consent. .Slaves were seen as property and not allowed to own anything.  Economic methods. ownership of property. medical care. they were totally dependent on their masters for basic necessities such as food.
