The Power and Ease of use of the EasyVSM Software

The experience one has with a measurement system depends on 3 things: • • • The accuracy of the measurement data The ease of use of the hardware The ease of use of the software

If the measurement data isn’t accurate, all other issues are more or less irrelevant. If the system is accurate is reliable and easy to use, most of the hardware interaction will consist of replacing samples, an action that will take 1 minute at most on a good VSM. More can be read about accurate measurement data and ease of use of VSM system hardware in other application notes. On a good system one will find that most of the time spent with the system consists of interacting with the system software, either in the setup of measurements or in the data analysis. Therefore the National Instruments slogan “The Software is the Instrument” is very much to the point. The system software should have the following characteristics: • • • • • Easy to use Easy to learn Powerful enough to do everything you want Have a powerful data analysis capability Produce high quality presentation ready output

This Application note will give an overview of several of the easy to use and some of the powerful functions available in the EasyVSM software. If you want more detailed information on any of these functions, please ask an ADE sales representative. The Setup of a Measurement (Recipe) This is one of the most basic functions that one will need to perform. In the EasyVSM software, this is a very simple process: Setup of measurement recipes 1. 2. 3. 4. In the Sequence Menu, press the Setup New Recipe Button: Select measurement type Fill in setup table Select Recipe and Data filename Step 3

Step 2:

Select Measurement type screen Choose measurement type, angle Step 4 temperature and press the “Next” button

and

Measurement Setup Menu. Fill in the table with all the sections, choose the ranges and number of averages and press the “Next” button.

Step 4: Select the recipe name and press the Save button

Loading/repeating existing recipes Of course, once a measurement recipe has been created, if the same recipe should be done on another sample, one doesn’t need to go through the measurement setup again. In this case it is better to load an existing recipe: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Press the Load Recipe button: Select measurement type Select recipe file Select or confirm data filename Press the Done button:

Setting up a sequence of measurements Frequently one may want to run a sequence of measurements, to fully analyze a sample at once. Such a sequence may consist of a series as a function of temperature or angle (or both) but it could also consist of a sequence of different types of measurements, such as a hysteresis loop followed by a remanence measurement followed by a time decay measurement. The EasyVSM software allows for all of these possibilities and also for all imaginable combinations of them. So you can decide to do a remanence measurement, then a series of hysteresis loops as a function of angle, then a series of decay measurements as a function of temperature and so on. The software has been created specifically with this in mind, so that it is very easy to set up any kind of sequence. A sequence of measurements consists of a sequence of recipes as shown in the figure below:

This sequence menu shows the different measurements that have been queued in the sequence. For each of the measurements, this screen shows the recipe name, the data file name, the calibration filename, the type of measurement, If the sample will be demagnetized before the measurement, the angle of the measurement, The temperature during the measurement and some instrument settings.

Recipes can be added to the sequence in the following ways: 1. 2. 3. 4. Setting up an individual new measurement recipe Loading an existing recipe Loading a previously used sequence setup file. Setting up a series of recipes as a function of for example temperature or field angle

1 and 2 have been shown earlier in this application note. Loading a sequence file is done by pressing the “Load Sequence” button in the sequence menu. To setup a series of recipes as a function of angle or temperature, the following can be done: Step 1: In the Sequence Menu, press the Setup New Recipe Button: Step 2: In the Add new Measurement Menu, select the measurement type and select series as a function of 1 parameter. (Note, one can also create series by pressing ‘Series as a function of temperature and angle’ or ‘Series as a function of 1 parameter, manual preparation setup’. The latter (very powerful) function allows one to setup any series of actions before the start of each measurement.) Now Press the ‘Next >>>’ button

Step 3: In the Setup Series with 1 parameter menu, shown above to the right, choose a parameter as a function of which you would like to do the series. Then create all the steps in the series by pressing the ‘Add’ or the ‘Replace’ button. You can use the ‘Add’ button if you want to build a series with varying point density. Step 4: Sequences can be created by setting up individual recipes, as shown before. Every time a recipe is created, it is added to the measurement sequence. One can also add recipes to the sequence by loading existing recipes, as shown before. It is also possible

Data Analysis Data Analysis is one of the most important features of any Measurement System Software. Depending on the quality of the software you will spend much time in third party software analyzing or correcting data, extracting parameters, generating plots etc. The EasyVSM strives to make all that unnecessary and allow you to do virtually all you need to do in the same software package. If this is still not enough, the data is always in ASCII format and the software has several functions that allow for easy and automatic exporting of data to for example MS Excel. Data Analysis Menu

The data Analysis menu is a tabbed screen that allows you to quickly change between the display of the graph, the parameters, the file or the actual data. The Data Table tab allows one to select and display only those columns of data that are of interest and quickly export this data to a spreadsheet*. Using that function a spreadsheet (inside the EasyVSM Data Analysis Software is opened) with the selected data. Calculations etc. can be done in there in the same way as in MS Excel.

*Note: This function only works if MS Excel is installed on the PC. MS Excel is not a standard part of the EasyVSM software but when this application is installed on the PC, an Excel Spreadsheet Active X is automatically embedded within the software.

The spreadsheet allows you to do calculations on the data in the same way as in Excel.

The Data Analysis menu allows you to display two files at the same time. This makes it easy to compare measurements done for example at different temperatures or at different angles.

The Power and Ease of use of the EasyVSM Software
Multiple User Environment In many laboratories it is desirable to be able to restrict access to certain system functions. This is typically done for the following reasons: • To restrict access to system critical settings to prevent undesired changes • To reduce the number of available menus and choices, thus making the software easier to use for less experienced operators. The EasyVSM software allows the definition of up to 4 classes of users. The system administrator can adjust access rights to virtually all menus for those 4 classes of operators: Access Rights

In the example shown, the DMS engineer and the System Administrator have virtually the same rights. The intermediate user can not access most of the system function and the operator level user even less. You can decide which rights should be available to which class of users for your organization. Different Users with Different Settings Besides the fact that you can define access rights for different classes of users, you can create a virtually unlimited number of users on your system. Each of these users is assigned to one of the classes of users and can have completely independent preferences, defaults etc. from all other users. This is very useful in environments where different users may work on different types of materials and therefore benefit from having a dedicated set of recipe preferences, measurement parameters, plot settings etc.
