Our Staff
Jennie Smith Elementary is proud of its wide variety of exemplary programs. Smith displayed its ability to meet individual student needs through a 30 minute
intervention and enrichment block, as well as a half hour tutoring session for small groups of children each day. In addition, our teachers use regular
formative assessment data to differentiate instruction based on students' strengths and needs as they work in small groups each day. Fourth and fifth grade
students had the opportunity this year to join the Art Club and Smith Chorus which had two performances. Jennie Smith also has instrumental instruction for
5th grade students. Our School Wide Enrichment program works with students to extend the regular curriculum as well as compete in academic contests
throughout the state. Many of our students won awards this year for exceptional performance at these competitions.

Only groups with greater than 40 students are reported
Jennie Smith Elementary School utilizes standards based curriculum aligned with the Delaware State Standards. In reading we use Houghton Mifflin
products in a 90 minute instructional block. Our writing program is grounded in the six traits of writing and encourages students to write in all content areas.
Our math curriculum, Math Trailblazers, is standards based. Our social studies curriculum utilizes Harcourt Publishing materials. For science, Jennie Smith,
in partnership with the Delaware Science Coalition utilizes Smithsonian Science Kits. All of our programs encourage problem solving skills and higher order
thinking through problem based learning, questioning and describing their answers in written form. Our Site Council, comprised of parents, teachers and
administration, continuously works to improve student achievement and build a positive school climate through our School Improvement Plan and decision
making.
