The type of business I help my clients create makes money mostly through information products. I’m in Scandinavia right now. except the ones you set for yourself. and consulting. while my friends and family were in the freezing. a lifestyle business is a business that adds freedom to your life. people to meet. There’s more to life than making money. as I write this. not the whole pie.
Compare that to a traditional business. especially Indian food). talking about a lifestyle business that’s online and based around your advice and knowledge. of course. and enjoying the beaches with my girlfriend.
Here’s how my business has impacted my lifestyle. learning Spanish. and things to do (and.WHAT IS A LIFESTYLE BUSINESS?
I spent almost the whole of 2010 in Spain. when you want. fine food to taste. There are no deadlines. and from where I want.
. or I may not. and no need to keep stock of anything. An advice-based online business has minimal overhead and commitments. where you’re often stuck with clients you don’t like. I’m. dark cold of Northern Scandinavia (where I’m from).
You probably don’t want to start a business just to have a business.
A lifestyle business is designed to dramatically increase the freedom in your life. I may be moving in the next few years. of course. so I decided hanging around family would be more fun. and it allows you to do what you want. what exactly is all this talk about a lifestyle business anyway? How is it different from any other kind of business? And why should you care? Good questions. and maybe even a store where you can’t take time off. To me. Granted.
A lifestyle business is a piece of the pie. There are places to go. such as a restaurant or a bed & breakfast. because I just had my first child on December 24th. A lifestyle business simply adds more freedom to your life. training courses.
but if you want to make this happen. Yes. Suddenly you can play songs and the stuff you’ve been practicing seems easy. too. you have to be willing to start before you’re ready. Let’s jump right into the goodies. while only needing an internet connection to work? It’s a dream many sleazy marketers have been peddling for as long as I can remember. This is how learning happens. I started by playing online poker professionally. so how do I get started?
The process is simple. you often don’t need it. it’s going to be frustrating as hell in the beginning. and this is how a lifestyle business is built: one step at a time. And even when it’s relevant. but it can happen. as people say. shall we?
. something clicks. In this short report.
Okay. and it is possible for anyone. Most people get stuck in focusing on how hard it is. and eliminate the rest. There’s a lot of information out there. and you’ll wonder if you can ever learn to play. or you could say it’s a process that starts with one step. If you want to make progress fast. Then one day. but not easy. That’s what this report is all about. you have to focus on the essential tasks. we’ll cover the seven essential steps you need to take to build a lifestyle business around your passions.
This all sounds good. It’s my choice. and then switched to online business. but isn’t it mighty hard?
You could say it’s hard. and you reach a new level. and my business allows me to make that choice. and most of it is useless. Your fingers will hurt. that includes you.
What could a lifestyle business do for you?
Do you dream of traveling around the world. because it isn’t relevant. I’ve been living this kind of life for over five years now. If you want to learn to play the guitar. everything will sound awful. so they never get started.
I have three main passions: 1) Personal Development 2) Online Business 3) Natural Health To start. you realize that the chocolate has its dark side as well. then you’ll give up at the first sign of trouble.
Say what? Could you give me an example?
Sure. Second. prune your list. It’s everywhere. passion. and sometimes it makes you sick to your stomach. you take your passions one against the other in elimination matches until the winner emerges. The first step then is to discover your passion. I take personal development and pit it against natural health. Third.STEP #1: DISCOVER YOUR PASSION
Passion. which most people do. If there isn’t . but how do you do that?
You don’t have to find your passion to do what you love. just go.you probably censored yourself. passion. Look at it like brainstorming. but as you keep going. If you aren’t interested in what you’re doing. No censoring allowed. Simply dump everything in your mind on paper. Who isn’t talking about passion nowadays? It’s like chocolate during Christmas. which one would it be?
. It seems like a good idea when you eat that first piece of chocolate. The reason I use the word passion is simply to help my clients to find something within that holds meaning for them. you begin by writing down every single interest and passion you have. let me give you a quick one. because there will inevitably be some weird topics in there. Now I ask myself: If I had to choose one to start a business around.
You could use the 10-minute elimination technique
And what is this fancy technique I speak of? First.
And what exactly is this blending you speak of?
Blending is what I’ve done on Wake Up Cloud.Personal development wins. because a business isn’t all about you. They are all over the place. This isn’t necessarily a problem. while increasing the freedom in your life. while most online business blogs lose sight of what matters. but I have a background in personal development. If you don’t choose one topic. only to drop it the next day. If no one is willing to pay you. So. It doesn’t mean you actually have to pick one.
What if you want to do everything?
Some people have so many interests that they simply cannot choose.
But before we do that.
What if you’re not 100% passionate?
. I don’t. pretend that someone is holding a gun to your head. Natural health is crossed off the list (for now). Some people call people like this scanners or Renaissance men. but then you get distracted. Next. online business. There are no laws that say you have to wake up with your hair on fire to work on your business. If you think you can’t make the decision. but if I HAD to make the choice. I’d chose online business. and life just happens. Remember. of course. remember the factor of randomness
Sometimes you think you know what you want. you don’t have a business. It’s about the people you help. I’m like this. because they are the ones who will pay you for your products and services. how exactly do you figure out if people want to pay? You read step #2. so I add in some of those spices as well. I know that building a business isn’t the end destination for most people. this is only an exercise to find a few of your strongest passions. I like to stay practical. because you can blend together your passions to create something unique and valuable. For example. I focus on helping you build a lifestyle business around your passions. it’s game over. It’s simply a way to do work you love. personal development vs. and sometimes they spend 6 months obsessively pursuing something. Much harder decision.
things happen. because when you move. Then before you know it. This whole process is just to get you taking action. If you stay in your head. You have to get the ball rolling.
. even if you don’t think you’re ready. nothing happens. you’re somewhere you never thought you’d be and through a few synchronistic events you’ve found what truly makes you come alive.
STEP #2: ASSESS VIABILITY
Viability means there’s a chance that what you want to do can become a viable business. because it means people are making money. This doesn’t mean you should never go after a market without competition.
. You also have to stand out and have a strategy that works. Assessing viability means doing some research and checking if there’s anyone doing what you want to do. and you (hopefully) have income rolling in. competition is good. because there may be a reason for it. And it never hurts to ask someone who’s doing what you want to do. because then you have room to play. and what solutions they want. Your research would consist of looking at what websites are out there. Just be careful. Competition is a sign that the market is healthy. it’s always good to look at what is currently working. how can you do effective research in the simplest way possible?
Let’s say you’re someone who’s gone from 50 pounds overweight to incredibly fit and healthy. and what isn’t. but you can increase the odds. you can get creative. In this case. and now you want to help others do the same. but most of my clients aren’t up for that kind of uncertainty.
So. I can. and what advice they have for someone starting out. proceed with care.
But what about doing something amazingly creative?
Starting a business that no one else has done before can certainly be done.
Don’t re-invent the wheel. you can never know for sure. Look at what’s working and what isn’t. If you’ve discovered an “untapped” market.
If you’re just getting started and want to make a living doing what you love. do your research. what problems they have. and looking at what people are selling. and make sure people are interested in what you have to offer.
“Could you tell me more about why competition is good?”
Surely. Of course. But it isn’t just enough to see that there’s competition. Getting a mentor or coach really helps. When you’ve gained experience. Ask them how they got there.
And I’m not talking about a target audience. what you help them with. you’ll fail. because everyone has a different set of problems. With the internet. you don’t have to appeal to everyone. no one will want your help. Yes. and you need to become the go-to person on a very specific set of problems. You’ve found a mentor. You see all these bloggers and people who want to make a living online. and it isn’t happening. but it’s true.” they say. Most people never get to this point. If you try. Now what?
It’s time for the next step. and the market is viable. which is focusing on who you help. You can’t help a crowd. most businesses never ask themselves who they help. because they aren’t willing to do what it takes. In fact. I’m talking about a target person. Are you?
. and why they should listen to you.” That’s a bit blunt.
Many of my clients object at this point
“But I want to help as many people as I can. My answer: “If you don’t narrow down who you help. one person.
“We’re flying to New York without navigational help. what. You know where to engage them and bring them back to your headquarters. and you had to go through a lot before you figured out how to do it. But you should go even further. your customers know they can trust you.”
Yes. you can be successful without them. Hopefully we’ll get there!” It’s not wise when you can just use the tools you have and get there quicker.STEP #3: WHO. because you have the expertise. When you have a why. and why they should listen to you. and why. you can speak to your customers in their language. the better. When you have a what. They don’t stand out. specifically? Maybe you help new moms lose their baby weight. It’s too specific. Who do you want to help. you know where to find your potential customers. And the more specific you make that.
“This feels wrong. That’s way too broad. The why could be that you have a child of your own and getting fit after your baby was tough. Okay. Most people are bland. and why?
You have to get very specific. what you help them with. They will determine your success. WHAT & WHY
Let me introduce you to the three w’s: who. and why?
When you have a who.
You have to get specific about who you help and what you help them with. and that’s exactly why you will be way ahead of the competition when you take the time to clarify who you help. and pick just one mom you can interview on her biggest frustrations and dreams. so they understand you and know that you’re the go-to person when they want their problems to go away. and you have proof that what you do works. but it would be like boarding an airplane and hearing the pilot say.
Why do you need who. Let’s say you want to help people get fit. The what would simply be the baby weight.
How do you clarify your who. That would be getting closer to clarifying your who. what. what.
The fear is a sign that you’re on the right track. you may be excited. or you may start freaking out just a bit. and what is the solution you provide? The why is the proof. They may get clients. You can get feedback. but if you can find a real person.
Here’s another way of looking at it
Look at the who you help as a target audience. but they never gain traction and they close shop before they see real results. and someone may buy their products. Another way to look at the what is as a problem.
. but instead of an audience. and you can do more than just come up with an imaginary mom who wants to lose weight in your head. you can do so much more. What is the problem you’re solving. You can look at this like a pen portrait or a persona. What proof do you have that what you recommend works? When you read this. You can interview that person. which is why the next section is all about fear and freak outs. pick one person you help.
Use whatever words work for you. But before long. Most people try to push away their fears. so you start down the path of your dreams once again. and allow them to do what they do without analyzing. This is what it’s designed to do. so do my coaching clients. then don’t start your own business. you stop thinking about going after your dreams. The problem starts when you give your thoughts too much authority. so you run and hide. You’re frustrated. stuck. and the sooner you fail. I use this on a daily basis. Focus in on it. and you know it. presenting alternatives (usually negative ones). you’re back at square one. and unhappy with life. or will you use it to your advantage?
How to stop the madness
You can stop it by recognizing it for what it is.
So.STEP #4: DEALING WITH FEAR
Your mind tricks you into submission by scaring the living daylights out of you. If you’re afraid of failure. Notice if you’re feeling negativity in your body. judging or trying to figure things out. This time you get a bit further along the path. They are merely thoughts. the sooner you’ll learn (assuming you learn from your failures). because you’ll be doing a lot of it. When this happens. what really works?
Welcoming your fears. and my girlfriend. Try it right now. Rest into it.
. It’s just your mind showing you what can go wrong.
Will you give into your fear. Surrender. let them be there. and so the cycle goes. but again you run into fear. and you get temporary relief. Then welcome the feeling.
What about the fear of failure?
The truth is that you will fail. and just observe without analyzing or trying to figure it out. It works. Instead of pushing them away. but that doesn’t work.
. you could just start working hard right now. unless a few of them are from outer space. I sure am glad I didn’t put myself out there. Fear is almost always something in the future that you cannot do anything about. When people are walking in the woods. you’re wrong.
“I’m afraid of what people will think of me if I put myself out there?”
And you will be. That could’ve turned out bad. You decide how it affects you. It doesn’t have to paralyze you. You never know. because I wanted to make money fast. find someone who knows what they’re talking about. Maybe you’ll freelance and get paid that way. From 2006 to early 2009. Or.If you think successful entrepreneurs are somehow immune from fear. If you want to make things happen fast. Or maybe you’ll do things right.”
“How will I keep a roof over my head if I do this?”
Maybe you’ll need to have a job while you build up your business. and they see a bear.
This is hard work. The thing is. It’s up to you. find a good market. and take action anyway. look for shortcuts. Just because a lifestyle business increases the freedom in your life doesn’t mean it’s easy. then by all means buy the products that promise fast results. Let the fear be there. and when you realize that it doesn’t work. I spent thousands on get rich quick programs. but if you want to be successful. you’ll make it work if you’re really serious about this. So what if people will say something about you? Do you want that to stop you from doing work you love? Do you really want to look back at your life a few decades from now and say “Yeah. They’re human like the rest of us. they aren’t afraid in the present moment. there’s no getting around it
If you want to be unsuccessful. they’re afraid of what will happen if the bear catches them. until you put yourself out there and see that your thoughts are scarier than reality. get ready to work hard and put in the hours. and hit the ground running.
STEP #5: BUILD YOUR PLATFORM
Okay. but for how long. like I said above. it’s time to just do something. Guest blogging means you write articles for other blogs. You need a strategy and you need to take specific steps to make it work. Yes. In return. so we’ve come a long way. Passion Blogging Guide a while ago. If you find yourself getting stuck in planning mode without making progress. it’s completely free.
How to build a popular blog
The number one strategy I’ve used to build a popular blog in the crowded personal development/online business niche was through guest blogging. what you help them with. it’s a free 60-page guide that will help you get started. and why people should listen. which means you get traffic and exposure. the more traffic you get. especially when you guest blog on the bigger blogs. Blogs are excellent at attracting prospective clients and customers to your business. because it’s when you experiment in the real world that you learn. you get to link back to your blog at the end of your article. You need a strategy.
Why I recommend blogging to my clients
Blogging has a low barrier to entry. who your helping.
Blogging is one of the most effective ways of getting the word out about your business. Don’t worry if you haven’t got them all.
. which is good. If you want more info on blogging. preferably popular ones in your niche. I wrote something called. A blog is like any website. The more you do this. and at this stage you should have a clear view of what your passion is. but not if you don’t know what you’re doing. I don’t know. Most people start a blog hoping to make a living writing about their personal life. and it doesn’t work like that. and you need a way to turn your visitors into people that are interested in what you have to offer. The most important part is getting started.
But blogging isn’t enough
Starting a blog isn’t enough.
How do you do this? You get people on an email list. because that’s the best way to stay in touch with them and get to know them better. I’m not talking about building a system that funnels people through to make you money. You have to become Sherlock Holmes. You have to become a detective to become successful. I’m talking about how you can make a living doing what you love. while delighting people with your products and services.
Solve problems and crack cases
The people that’ll read your blog have problems. and they come to you for solutions to those problems. you research. You look at the emails you get.STEP #6: INVESTIGATE
Sherlock Holmes was impeccable at solving difficult to crack cases with his highly developed skills of logical reasoning and forensic science. What questions are they asking? What are they struggling with? And what are they really saying? You have to read between the lines.
You discover what people want by listening.
People listen to you because you help them
Your readers don’t come to get updates on your personal life. He was curious and he wanted to get to the bottom of things. your name is Paris Hilton or Brad Pitt. and you interview your readers. You’d be surprised at how appreciative they are when someone cares enough to ask. They come because you help them move closer to what they want. You should be the Sherlock Holmes of your niche. and ask. And if you don’t understand what someone means.
How do you discover what your readers want?
You ask. email them. It’s still all about your readers. They look to you for help.
. then you could possibly get away with writing about what your bathroom looks like. Even though Holmes was a fictional character. and the comments your readers leave. but don’t be fooled. Yes. you can’t argue with the amount of cases he cracked. it’s that simple. It just so happens that an effective way to do this is via personal stories that are relevant to them. and so should you. Unless. of course.
. and you talk to the readers you do have. Sometimes I email them out of the blue to ask them to get on the phone with me for 15 minutes and have a chat. you can create great products and services that people really want. The bottom line is that you have to listen. You go to forums. then you do what it takes. and talk with my readers. This is where your content. I constantly listen.
You will never run out of things to say if you do this
People often tell me that they don’t know what to write about. but that’s because they aren’t listening. If you don’t have enough readers to get feedback. other blogs. I have more content ideas than I have time to produce. products and services will come from. I want to know what’s really bothering them. because when you do.
you need to drill down on one specific issue.
How do you know what to offer your readers?
You can do surveys. You can offer consulting (tip: do a few free ones just to get some insights). but if you’ve listened to your readers and you’ve created a product to solve one specific problem. you can hold a few Q&A’s with your customers. What are people wondering? What are they struggling with? It’s very simple. a specific product on creating products could be: how to get paid before you create your product by pre-selling. For example. because then you can get feedback. but if you’ve been in this game long enough. and you can see if it sells. It all goes back to who you help. you know that traffic doesn’t equal money. And if it does sell.
How long/large should your first product be?
It should be as long or short as it needs to be. and sell well. You can keep an eye on the emails and comments you get. chances are that it will sell.
What if I create a product and it doesn’t sell?
Then you go back to the drawing board. but the focus can’t be on you.STEP #7: PRODUCTS & SERVICES
And isn’t that what this is all about? A business is a business because it sells something. It has to be on the people you’re serving. and what you help them with. The thing with your first product is that you don’t want to spend months or years creating it. You probably won’t be successful right out of the gate. From there. Sometimes it almost seems like people think they’ll have a real business if their blogs get enough traffic. but that’s a topic for another day. and expand it. What you want is relevant traffic. you don’t have a business. You can interview people and ask them questions. You want to get it out there as soon as possible.
If you aren’t selling something.
launch it. most people are afraid. If it helps people save $500 or make $500. then improve. because it’s never going to be perfect. In the beginning. How should you price it?
Whatever you feel comfortable with. it’s going to be worth a lot more than $7.
. so they keep tweaking their products and never get it done. It depends on what it does. while adding more to it and making your customers happy to buy more from you. This is not about putting crap out there. and then you can start improving what you do. you could charge anything from $7 to $27 or more. so start where you are comfortable and increase it from there. but don’t go too low. Create it. but it’s also not about waiting until it’s perfect.
What’s the most important thing to keep in mind?
The most important thing is to take action. The first one should be a quickie. and get feedback. This is not about milking your audience for every last penny. If you create a 30-page workbook.
This sounds more serious than it is. Look at what you’re passionate about.
Step #4: Dealing with Fear
You will reach a point where things get uncomfortable. You don’t have to be crystal clear on this right now. focus on taking the next step. This is what people mean when they talk about pushing your comfort zone. and why they should listen to you.
Step #2: Assess Viability
The next step is to look at if there are people out there doing what you want to do. good. but you do have to know the general direction you’re heading in. what you help them with. Does competition exist? If it does. it certainly does push you. but you may still feel overwhelmed. don’t let it stop you.SUMMARY
Those are the seven key steps to building a lifestyle business around your passions. Here’s a quick summary of what we just covered:
Step #1: Discover Your Passion
It all starts by looking at what you enjoy doing. If you’re starting out.
. just like with creating products. is to take action and get moving. but if you don’t know what that is.
Step #3: Who. If you do. and neither are you. that means there’s an opportunity to make money in that market. Then move forward from there. What & Why
Then look at who you help. The most important thing. and keep coming back to these core questions. focus on discovering what you want to do and how you can help people. Do what you can for now. and then keep moving forward. because you’re doing new things. so expect it. While building an online business isn’t hard. This is not rocket science. I’m not here to create a business around something I hate.
Do whatever you have to do to get into the minds of your readers.
Step #6: Investigate
When you’ve got a small following. because I’ll send you more information on this. Ask. because that’s how you’ll figure out what to do in Step #7. It doesn’t have to be big. But I’m not giving it to you all at once. and remember. It just has to solve a problem. and stay subscribed to the Wake Up Cloud newsletter. However. or even a teleseminar series. it’s not easy to get readers. this doesn’t have to be perfect. audio course. That’s why you need to read the Passion Blogging Guide. you can create a small ebook.
Step #7: Products & Services
Once you start getting a feel for what people are struggling with. because that would just overwhelm you and nothing would happen. interview. Keep the spotlight on your readers.
. unless you know what you’re doing. It’s easy to start up and easy to get going. you start investigating (remember Sherlock Holmes?). video presentation. and offer free consulting. Get it out there and get feedback.Step #5: Build Your Platform
One of the best ways to get in touch with the people you want to serve is through a blog.
and confusing. uncertainty. you aren’t taking into account the fear. because there’s too much. all you can do is take one step at a time. don’t we? Think of it like Christmas. In each email you’ll get something valuable that’ll help you move toward building the lifestyle you want. but NOW. because you can’t know what’s coming.
And if you want to jumpstart your progress
You may want to check out my best-selling guide: Passionate Living. but I’ll leave hints in the emails you get. uncertainty. It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you try to plan the whole process. It answers the most pressing questions my readers and clients have on this topic. so keep your eyes peeled for those. We have to keep things a little interesting.
. you’ll receive a free teleseminar in the next few days that’ll help you gain clarity on your passion. how do you know that it comes from a credible source? Do you want to take the risk of spending the next 6 or 12 months trying to follow a strategy that doesn’t even work? On top of that. You can get a lot of it for free. and procrastination that pops up when you’re going after something meaningful.
How to make sure you stay on track
One of the best ways to keep moving forward is to constantly focus on what you can do now. After that. so don’t. not a year from now.
In the next few days
If you’re on the Wake Up Cloud newsletter.WHAT’S NEXT?
The amount of information available online is staggering. which is all about how you start moving toward doing what you love without overwhelm. I’m not going to tell you what exactly you’re getting yet. In short. such as: dealing with fear. but then. you can go here. If it’s something you feel interested in looking more closely at. Not tomorrow. And it shares the story of how I built my online business. it’s filled with the best material I’ve got. you’ll keep getting valuable information that most people out there would sell. and procrastination.
I wanted something else. when I couldn’t do it anymore. and as I write this in 2012. and I didn’t like it.
From professional poker player to online entrepreneur
Then at 18.
When you email me. so I jumped in. because people have actually told me this dozens and dozens of times. my journey started. I’m doing pretty good. It surprises people. I care. and I made a living playing cards until the age of 23. And I don’t say this to brag. because we just had a child. you get a real answer back. I couldn’t work 9-to-5. and they don’t care about their customers. At first. I spent almost the whole of 2010 in Spain with my girlfriend. and I didn’t want to. because what does that say about all the other people in this market? It seems most are only keen to make money.ABOUT THE AUTHOR
