BUDGET-CONSCIOUS BRIDES TRIM BILL
WITH DESTINATION WEDDINGS
(NewsUSA) - Tying the knot isnt what it used to be. The
wedding industry is as protable as primetime football,
celebrities compete for the shortest, most gimmicky
marriages (72 days or less?) and the exotic appeal of a
romantic getaway has led to the widespread popularity of
destination weddings.
One in every 10 weddings features an exotic locale, or
at least a location neither the bride nor groom calls home.
While theres no absolute explanation as to why destination
weddings have started a bridal takeover, the hefty price of
typical weddings is reason enough for many -- especially if
Daddy isnt footing the bill.
If done correctly, destination weddings can be a cheaper
alternative for everyone. Guests dont have to buy expensive
gifts, just a ticket. All the money spent on the wedding
party, venues, refreshments, cake, reception and decor is
signicantly reduced if not cut altogether, explains Nini Pardo,
wedding planner at Stay in Costa Rica, an accommodations
and rental management company.
The author of Destination Weddings for Dummies, Susan
Breslow Sardone, says the traditional American wedding
costs an average of $28,082, whereas destination weddings
average around $20,600.
Some of the cost difference is denitely a result of
resorts and hotels capitalizing on the trend. Many now
offer the full wedding package with wedding planners,
musicians, photographers, etc. We employ full-time wedding
coordinators, like myself, to craft intimate weddings at our
Los Suenos Resort, Pardo adds. Weve found it really
appealing to budget-conscious brides.
Budget-conscious brides have become a trend as well,
according to Patricia MacArthur, executive director of
WeddingStar.com -- a go-to authority on all things wedding-
related. MacArthur says more brides are trimming expenses
by taking the DIY route for guest favors and some decorative
elements.
For tropical weddings especially, many of the cheaper, DIY
options are more easily packed into suitcases. For instance,
colorful fabric is being used to replace owers and native
delicacies are replacing towering cakes.
An extra tip from the experts, when considering the perfect
setting to make your vows and possibly trash the dress: look
at locations that are one ight away from you and most of
your guests. Direct ights tend to be cheaper and less hassle.

BRUSH UP ON DENTAL CARE FOR A
TIMELESS SMILE
(NewsUSA) - It is well known that taking care of your
body, including your teeth and gums, is an important part
of healthy aging. Yet, despite recognizing the importance
of oral health, many individuals are not taking the essential
steps to maintain their smile.
According to a 2008 study by the American Dental
Association, Crest and Oral-B, The Public Speaks Up on
Oral Health Care: An ADA and Crest/Oral-B Survey, more
than eight of 10 adults aged 50 to 64 believe maintaining
healthy teeth and gums are essential to overall good health,
yet only a third say theyre taking the proper steps to do so.
Thats exactly the kind of statistic that has health experts
worried.
Many adults believe theyre doing everything they can to
protect their mouth and dont realize that red gums or minor
bleeding during brushing or ossing can be a sign of gingivitis.
Gingivitis is caused by plaque bacteria at the gum line that
can cause gums to swell. If left untreated, it can progress to
a more serious form of gum disease, known as periodontitis,
an infection that can be a major cause of tooth loss in adults,
says Ann Benson, RDH, Mobile Dentistry of Arizona. Some
research suggests there may be a link between periodontitis
and other health problems, such as cardiovascular disease
and diabetes.
Now that you know more about gingivitis, here are some
tips to help you identify the symptoms and keep your timeless
smile.
* Know the signs. If your gums are swollen or bleed easily
while brushing or ossing, you could be among the 50 percent
of American adults estimated to have gingivitis.
* Give your mouth the attention it deserves. Help prevent
gingivitis by brushing and ossing daily. When you brush,
make sure it is for at least two minutes, including 30 seconds
brushing each section of your mouth (upper right, upper left,
lower right and lower left), both morning and night.
* Create a routine. A regular oral care routine using
products that protect against plaque and gingivitis is
essential. I recommend that my patients use Crest Pro-
Health Clinical Gum Protection toothpaste, says Benson. It
provides Crests highest level of protection against plaque
bacteria and is clinically proven to help reverse gingivitis in
four weeks.
* Eat wisely. Avoiding sugars and starches applies to adults
and children.
* Visit your dentist. Schedule dental appointments every
six months for a check-up and cleaning.

A STRAINING ISSUE FOR
POSTPARTUM MOMS
(NewsUSA) - New moms are often surprised when they
experience a bout of constipation after giving birth, unaware
that this is actually a very common postpartum complaint.
Many women may experience constipation following
childbirth, due to the slowdown of the digestive system
and temporary loss of muscle tone in the abdomen. But
there are other explanations. Factors that may contribute
to constipation include: medications administered for
postpartum pain, prenatal vitamins continued while breast
feeding and anesthesia administered during labor.
A fear of pushing can also cause a cycle of constipation.
New moms may be hesitant to strain themselves because
of post-childbirth tenderness, fear of tearing a stitch or pain
from hemorrhoids. C-sections can also contribute.
Mothers should know that this situation is very common.
In one survey of about 1,000 new moms conducted by
Russell Research in collaboration with Purdue Products, the
makers of Colace Capsules, it was found that 47 percent
of new moms experienced constipation or other digestive
issues after giving birth, and 89 percent of those mothers
experienced problems with bowel movements in the days
immediately after childbirth.
There are many ways to combat this issue. While it may be
hard to get back into gear after the ordeal your body has just
been through, it may help to exercise a little each day once you
have been told by your doctor that its okay. Adequate daily
ber is also key to keeping away constipation. Eating bran
mufns, high-ber cereal and lots of fruits and vegetables is
a great way to make sure youre getting your daily intake. It is
also important to drink plenty of uids.
According to the survey, 77 percent of new mothers with
constipation took a stool softener, such as Colace Capsules.
Since the active ingredient is docusate sodium, Colace
Capsules help avoid the painful straining associated with
occasional constipation. Colace Capsules is the leading
product recommended by doctors and pharmacists to provide
reliable relief. Of course, if you are pregnant or nursing, you
should consult with your doctor before use, and remember to
tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking.
The survey also revealed that a startling 67 percent of
new moms were not warned about postpartum constipation.
For more info, check out www.colacecapsules.com. Read
through the prevention section to get tips on natural ways
to combat postpartum constipation.
WILL DAIRY BOOST YOUR WEIGHT-LOSS
RESOLUTION?

(NewsUSA) - If weight loss and dieting are on your New
Years resolution agenda, an unlikely food group may be the
help you need.
Consuming dairy products as part of your daily diet can
help keep weight down, according to several studies.
Findings in the Journal of Nutrition demonstrated that higher-
protein, high-dairy diets shaved off belly fat and increased
lean muscle.
One hundred percent of the weight lost in the higher-
protein, high-dairy group was fat. And the participants gained
muscle mass, which is a major change in body composition,
says Andrea Josse, lead author of the study and a graduate
student in the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster
University.
In addition, a Harvard study, which suggests that the
food quality is more important than its calorie count, found
that eating specic high-quality foods was linked with less
weight gain over time. Its data showed that the more daily
servings people ate of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains
and yogurt, the less weight they gained. In fact, the research
found that each extra daily serving of yogurt prevented 0.82
of a pound of weight gain.
The Nutrition and Metabolism journal reported a study in
which participants who consumed three or more servings of
dairy a day after weight loss were able to eat more calories
without gaining weight than those who didnt consume dairy.
Milk is nutritionally unique in that it is a great source of nine
essential nutrients: calcium, potassium, phosphorus, protein,
vitamins A, D and B12, riboavin and niacin. It provides three
of the ve nutrients of concern that children do not get
enough of: calcium, magnesium and potassium.
By combining a high intake of nutrient-rich dairy with
regular physical activity, it wont even feel like youre trying
to lose weight.
However, as with any diet, you must be realistic. Results
take time, so rst commit to getting through January to
establish a real routine, says Alyssa Greenstein, a registered
dietitian with the Dairy Council of Florida.
According to a National Health and Nutrition survey, 86
percent of women and 76 percent of men fail to meet the
recommended dairy intake of three servings each day. That
means the majority of Americans dont have satisfactory
levels of essential nutrients like potassium, zinc, calcium and
folate. These levels plummet when dieters attempt to trim
calories by purging dairy.

DONT TREAD LIGHTLY ON WINTER
TIRE SAFETY

(NewsUSA) - With winter upon us, tire safety in cold
weather is something every car owner should be familiar
with. Most drivers concentrate on tire safety in hot weather
to avoid blowouts, but the same precautions should be
exercised in the winter. One of the most effective ways to be
safe on the road is to use a winter tire specially designed for
cold weather.
Common all-season tires contain a tread compound that
gradually hardens when temperatures dip below 45 degrees,
resulting in a decrease in traction. These tires also tend
to collect winter road debris, like snow and ice, which can
impact a vehicles performance on wintry roads.
Mark Ballard, spokesman for Discount Tire Company,
Americas largest independent tire and wheel retailer,
advises motorists to replace all four tires with winter tires if
they can expect to encounter snow and ice during the winter
months. Its best to use winter tires, especially if you live in
an area with extreme weather conditions where temperatures
are below 45 degrees on a consistent basis, he explains.
Relying on an all-season tire to do the work of a winter tire
can be dangerous to you and other motorists.
In recent years, the Rubber Manufacturers Association
(www.rma.org) developed new standards for winter traction,
which led to technological advancements in the manufacture
of winter tires. For example, a newer tread compound
featuring a higher sillica content retains tire exibility even in
freezing temperatures, allowing the tread to maintain its grip
with the highway.
Also, tread block design has been greatly improved with

the addition of thousands of sipes, small
cuts in the tread block that provide extra
biting edges for more traction.
Every aspect of todays winter tire has
been engineered to provide better traction
and greater ability to quickly expel water,
slush and snow, provide a quieter ride and
allow for longer tread life, says Ballard.
Winter tires tend to be slightly more
expensive than all-season ones. But like
all tires, winter tires perform optimally when
properly inated. Remember that a signicant
drop in temperature can lower air pressure.
Typically, a 10-degree drop will cause tires to
lose a pound of pressure.

BEYOND THE NUMBER: SIMPLE
WAYS TO SAVE FOR RETIREMENT
(NewsUSA) - Remember when it was sort
of fun to talk about The Number?
The Number refers to the amount of
money youd need to retire comfortably, and
it was borrowed from the title of a 2006 book
by former Esquire editor Lee Eisenberg.
Everywhere you went in those comparatively
giddy pre-crash days, it seemed, people
were tossing around gures -- $1 million, $5
million - and often acting like itd be a cinch
to get there if they just gave up one Grande
Cafe Vanilla Frappuccino a week.
Needless to say, times have changed since
then. But unless you like your 1-in-175 million
odds of winning Power Ball, the need to soak
away as much money as possible - as fast as
possible, in the case of aging Baby Boomers
- has only become more imperative.
One of the best pieces of advice we give
clients is to keep it simple, says Elaine
Smith, master tax advisor at H&R Block,
the giant tax preparation rm (www.hrblock.
com).
How simple? Read on:
* Make automatic contributions to 401(k)
s. We now know what can happen if you let
market uctuations spook your use of this
convenient savings vehicle. According to a
study by Fidelity Investments of millions of
their accounts, investors who dumped all
their allocations in stocks between October
1, 2008, and March 31, 2009 (the market
crash), and stayed out of stocks through
last June 30, 2011 (a big upswing), saw an
average increase in account balances of only
2 percent. That compares to an average 50
percent increase for those who rode things
out with a continuous allocation strategy that
included stocks.
* Dont squander your raise. Consulting
rm Hay Group says the average raise last
year was 2.8 percent. Say your salarys
$50,000. Thats a $1,400 increase, or $26.92
a week. If you put that money into an IRA, in
10 years it wouldve grown to $3,108, based
on an 8 percent average annual return. Its
all about delaying immediate rewards on
things like your fth pair of designer jeans,
says Smith.
* Invest your tax refund. The average refund
last year was $2,913. Even the interest rate
on savings accounts beats the free loan you
essentially gave the government.
* Take advantage of new fee disclosures.
A new law is set to require much more
transparency in most 401(k) plans. But why
wait? Financial websites let you compare
fund expense ratios, and the difference
between an actively managed mutual fund
charging 1.75 percent and an index fund
charging only 0.07 percent -- especially if the
formers performance is sub-par -- adds up.
DRINKING WATER: AN INVALUABLE
RESOURCE TAKEN FOR GRANTED
(NewsUSA) - You turn on the tap, and
water comes out. Period. Safe, plentiful
and affordable drinking water is one of
our nations most precious resources and
something most of us take for granted.
But what if you turned the tap and nothing
happened, or if the water you drank made
you sick?
While pouring a glass of water may seem
simple, before it arrives at your tap there
is a complex process of collecting, storing,
treating and distributing that helps ensure
its availability and quality. In fact, water
utilities implement comprehensive water
management plans to ensure that adequate
amounts of drinking water are available.
These include conservation and reuse,
reclamation and sourcing strategies.
Drinking water supplied by utilities is always
treated to remove contaminants and harmful
micro-organisms. That treatment process
typically consists of clarication (to remove
dirt and other particles), ltration (to remove
even smaller particles) and disinfection (to
kill bacteria and most viruses). The water is
then delivered to residential and commercial
customers via an extensive pipe network.
Drinking water utilities are committed
to protecting public health and constantly
monitoring and reassessing their methods
for treating water to ensure its quality. In
part, this is due to changing government
regulations, which periodically alter water
quality standards. In addition, they may
undertake other forms of treatment not
expressly required to comply with regulations
in order to ensure that drinking water meets
and often exceeds the standards and needs
of local communities.
For example, they may seek to remove
trace compounds that are not currently
regulated, and to enhance the aesthetic
quality of the water.
Drinking water utilities carry out these
services while also managing costs and
minimizing environmental impacts of their
processes; they are committed to keeping
drinking water affordable. Water utilities and
other stakeholders invest more than $12
million each year in the Water Research
Foundation to sponsor research that enables
water utilities, public health agencies and
other professionals to provide safe and
affordable drinking water to the public.
So the next time you pour a glass of
water from the tap, take a moment to honor
the commitment and signicant investment
made to ensure the quality of that water.
