Section 7: Cast Iron
7.0 Microstructure: The microstructure of castings supplied to this specification is expected to consist essentially of
carbides, martensite, bainite, austenite: and in exceptional cases minor amounts of graphite or pearlite. It is not
expected that the microstructure be routinely determined nor reported except when requested by purchase order or
in cases of dispute.
8.0 Hardness: The hardness of the castings shall conform to Table 2. Hardness tests should be performed on the
original cast surface or up to 1/8 inch (3mm) below that surface. Hardness testing should be performed according
to one of the following methods: Test Method E10 (Brinell) using a tungsten carbide ball and 3000 kgf load; Test
Method E18 (Rockwell) using a diamond cone penetrator, 150 kgf load and the Rockwell C scale; or Test Method
E 92 (Vickers).

9.0 Surface Integrity and Roughness: The surface of the casting shall be examined visually and shall be free of
adhering sand, scale, cracks, porosity, blowholes, shrinkage defects, and hot tears. Unacceptable surface
discontinuities shall be removed and their removal verified by visual examination. Unacceptable visual surface
discontinuities are shown in, but not limited to, Visual Method MSS-SP-55.

10.0 Quality/Dimensions: All castings shall be made in a workmanlike manner and shall conform to the dimensions
on the drawings.

11.0 Additional Inspections: When specified by purchase order or drawing, additional inspections (mag particle,
Xray, ultrasonic, dye penatrant, ect) may be required. Additional inspections shall be in accordance with ASTM
A781/A781M and it’s supplemental requirements.

12.0 Weld Repair Weld repair is generally not permitted on gray iron castings.

13.0 Certification Requirements:

13.1 Certificate of Conformance: Required for all castings purchased.
13.2 Chemical analysis and/or mechanical testing with the appropriate reports may be required by the Quality,
Engineering or Purchasing Departments, or by the customer.
13.2.1 Chemical Analysis Report:: If stated as a requirement on the casting order, the Supplier shall
furnish a chemical analysis report for each heat of castings. If no chemical analysis report is
