A dark hyper-comedy set in London in the late 1990s during the last gasp of the newspaper wars just before the dot-com tidal waveabout two female journalists at opposite ends of their life and work who become locked in a fierce tango of wills and whose lives are forever changed by their (not-so-) brief (head-on) encounter. DrOWnED
Drowned, set in the idyllic countryside during a short-lived Swedish summer, creates an atmosphere of foreboding in which even the perfume of freshly picked vegetables roasting in the kitchen becomes ominous. A single young woman visits her older sister, who is married to a writer as charismatic as he is violent. As the young woman falls under her brother-in-laws spell, the plot unfolds in a series of precisely rendered turns. Meanwhile the reader, anticipating the worst, hopes against hope that disaster can be averted. More than a mere thriller, this debut novel delves deep into the feminine soul and at the same time exposes the continuing oppression of women in Swedens supposedly enlightened society.

A publishing event: the fourth volume in Robert Caros monumental biography, The Years of Lyndon Johnson, which began with the best-selling and prize-winning The Path to Power, Means of Ascent, and Master of the Senate. The Passage of Power follows Johnson through both the most frustrating and the most triumphant periods of his career. It tells the story of his volatile relationship with John kennedy and Robert kennedy during the fight they waged for the 1960 Democratic nomination for president and through Johnsons unhappy vice presidency. DEAr MArCUS:
An inspiring memoir written as a letter to the unknown man who shot the author in the back at age thirteen while he was walking home from a New Years Eve party on Manhattans Lower East Side. The event rendered him a paraplegic at an early age. The story is about the importance of optimism, forgiveness, and enjoying life to its fullest. Portland, OR

The vibrant red color and distinctive flavor of this recipe come from the achiote recado, a spice paste made with annatto, the seed of a tree native to Central America. Long, slow cooking in banana leaf brings a taste of tropical Mexico to your slow cooker while replicating the traditional pit-cooking method that gives the recipe its name. Keep it simple and authentic by serving it with black beans, corn tortillas, and white rice, as well as fiery Mayan xni pec, a citrusy salsa laced with onion and habanero chiles. Fried plantains are an excellent accompaniment as well. Boneless chicken may be used instead of the pork shoulder.
2 teaspoons whole cumin seeds 3 ounces achiote paste 1/4 cup peeled garlic cloves 2 serrano chiles, stemmed 1/2 cup diced white onion 2 teaspoons kosher salt 2 tablespoons white vinegar 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice 2 1/2 pounds boneless pork shoulder, cut into 1-inch cubes 2 (12-inch) pieces banana or plantain leaf (see note) 1/2 cup water
To serve, sprinkle with a little chopped cilantro and pass the salsa alongside.

In a small skillet over medium heat, toast the cumin until fragrant, stirring frequently so it doesnt burn. Let cool completely and grind in a spice grinder. Combine the ground cumin with the achiote paste, garlic, serranos, onion, salt, vinegar, and orange juice in a food processor and process until very smooth. Coat the pork evenly with half the spice mixture. Line the bottom of a slow cooker with one piece of banana leaf. Top with the pork and the remaining spice mixture. Add the water and place the second banana leaf over the pork. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours.

Q: Why did you write the book? A: Rocky Flats was the big secret of my childhood. No one knew what they did at the plant; the rumor in the neighborhood was that they made household cleaning products. We knew nothing about radioactive and toxic contamination. My childhood was also shadowed by the secrecy surrounding my fathers alcoholism. My family was very close and loving but also troubled. I wrote the book to learn what really happened at Rocky Flats, to learn everything I could about plutonium pits and nuclear weapons and the crucial role the plant played during and after the Cold War. I also wanted to understand my family and the broader context of what it meant to grow up during the seventies. Secrecy at the level of the community and at the level of family turned out to be a central theme in the book. one of the great ironies of my life is that I spent several years as a travel writer in Europe, looking for good stories to write about, and the biggest story turned out to bequite literallyin my own backyard. My family and our neighbors were Cold War warriors, as the plutonium workers themselves were called, but no one told us.
A haunting work of narrative nonfiction about a young woman growing up in a small Colorado town close to Rocky Flats, a secret nuclear-weapons plant once designated the most contaminated site in America. Memphis, TN www.kristeniversen.com

Zoobiquity is the term the authors have coined to refer to a new, speciesspanning approach to health. After being called in to consult on a case of heart failure in a monkey at the Los Angeles Zoo, Natterson-Horowitz found herself launched on a journey of discovery that reshaped her entire approach to medicine.
