The zoo keeper and the monkey 1. A clever monkey escapes from zoo.

The zoo keeper finds him in a tree. After failing to entice the monkey down, the zoo keeper points her tranquilizer gun directly at the monkey and shoots. The clever monkey lets go at the same instant the dart leaves the gun barrel, intending to land on the ground and escape. Does the dart hit the monkey or does it miss the monkey? Show that the dart always hits the monkey, regardless of the darts muzzle velocity (provided that it gets to the monkey before he hits the ground). Please go through the following steps in order to show that the dart always hits the monkey regardless of the darts muzzle velocity. a. Consider the initial muzzle velocity to be v0. If the monkey is at distance d away from the gun (origin), how much time does the dart take to cover this distance?

b. What is the vertical distance traveled by the monkey in time t?

Considering the monkeys' initial position as origin and downward direction to be +ve

c. How high is the monkey from the x-axis at t = 0?

d. How high is the monkey from x-axis at time t?

e. How high is the dart from x-axis at time t?

f. The condition for the dart to hit the monkey is ydart = ymonkey at time t? Find this condition.

g. Prove this condition by replacing t with the expression derived for question a.

Motion in two dimension A car moves clockwise at constant speed around an oval track as shown in the top-view diagram below. Draw vectors to indicate the acceleration of the car at each of the points A-F. if the acceleration is zero at any point, indicate that explicitly. (Note: this is not a strobe photograph of the motion.) C B Oval Track

F Top-view diagram Explain how you knew to draw the vectors as you did.

Suppose that the car is initially at the rest at point A. the car then begins to move, continually speeding up as it moves clockwise around the track. a. On the diagram below, draw vectors to indicate the velocity of the car at each points A-F. C B Oval Track

1. Suppose you are in an airplane flying straight and level with constant speed. Now, suppose you were to drop a lead balloon from the plane. How would the balloon appear to you (still in the plane, looking out the hatch from which you dropped the lead balloon) to move as it travels towards the ground? Assume that there is no air resistance or wind. You may draw a picture as part of your explanation, if you would like.

2.

A ball rolls off a table and undergoes projectile motion. Define a coordinate system such that the +x-direction is parallel to the ground in the direction of the ball s motion, and the +y-direction is positive down. While the ball is in the air, what are the x- and y-components of the ball s acceleration?

3. You shoot a bullet from a gun at the same time that you simply drop an identical bullet from the same height as the gun. Does one bullet reach the ground before the other? If yes, then elaborate on which bullet will strike first and why. If no, then explain why not.
