Idea of a great time he: Learning to climb

coconut palms with Humacao locals, then
learning the fne art of gashing the nuts with
a machete for an electrolyte-flled libation.
she: Strolling along the cobbled streets of
Calle del Cristo and Calle San Francisco in Old
San Juan, window-shopping (OK, actually
shopping) for designer and duty-free steals.
Best meal he: El Rancho Original on the
Pork Highway in Guavate. Whole roasted
pork, live music and backyard gambling.
she: Jose Enrique! ∏ucked in an unmarked
house in San Juan’s Santurce district, it isn’t
much to look at, but inside — sweet mofongo!
Best night-life activity he: ∏his again goes
to El Rancho Original on the Pork Highway.
she: Enough with the Pork Highway already.
For something more sophisticated, you can’t
beat sipping mojitos at an oceanfront restau-
rant along Avenida Ashford.
Wanted to spend money on he: Pinchos. I
took every chance I got to stop at a roadside
stand and sample a morsel of these chicken
(let’s hope it was chicken, anyway) delights.
she: What didn’t I want to spend money on?
Jewelry in San Juan, bikinis in Rincon, fresh
coffee beans in San Sebastian. Not shopping
in Puerto Rico is a daily test of will.
Never again would I ... he: Go kayaking on
the bioluminescent bay tour. It’s amazing and
all, but a bit tame for me. she: Brave El Yunque
without bug spray. It’s the only tropical rain-
forest in the U.S. National Forest system, so
exploring it is a must. But at least wear sleeves.
Favorite activity he: Surfing in Aguadilla
and Rincon. ∏here’s no doubt Puerto Rico
has some of the best waves in the world. she:
Surfng is fun and all, but where do you put
your rum punch? I’ll take mine on the beach,
thanks. And keep them coming.
