“American Spirit” to Perform in Oroville, Calif. on March 5
Award-winning show producers, Matt Davenport Productions, will present their newest touring show, “American Spirit,” at the State Theatre in Oroville, California on Monday, March 5, 2012 at 7:30pm. Limited tickets will be available at the door for $25. This musical-theatrical production is the fifth and final performance in the Oroville Concert Association’s 20112012 series, having featured the ShangriLa Chinese Acrobats, Poulenc Trio (oboe, bassoon and piano), Kaori and Eric (classical guitar and flute). Announcements regarding their 2012-2013 season will be made in April. For additional information call (530) 589-2667 or (530) 589-0537, or visit the association website at www.orovilleconcertassociation.com. Initially inspired by the ten-year anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001, the “American Spirit” show concept developed by writers Matt Davenport and Scott Seidl has evolved into a montage of the moments, memories and music that embody the “American Spirit.” More than a patriotic show, this fully costumed and choreographed production show, with a cast of 10 performers, will take the audience down memory lane through eyes of a slightly befuddled Mayor of Hometown, USA remembering the American Revolution, Civil War, Jazz, Broadway, Spirituals and more - America’s heroes on the battlefield and ball field rubbing elbows with entertainers and politicians alike. “I saw something in my friends and neighbors that I recognize as uniquely American in the days and weeks after that infamous day, we wanted to put that pride - that shared history - at center stage,” says Mr. Davenport.

History Professor’s Talk on “Southern Unionists” Commemorates 150th Anniversary of Civil War
North versus South. That, in essence, defines the U.S. Civil War for many Americans. According to this view, the southern slave states seceded from the United States, and then fought with the northern free states to establish the independence of the South’s new government, the Confederate States of America. CSU, Chico history professor Robert Tinkler argues on the 150th anniversary of the Civil War that such an understanding of North America’s greatest military conflict leaves out the crucial role played by southern Unionists. That group will be the subject of Tinkler’s free public lecture entitled “Lincoln’s Loyalists: Dissenters in the Confederacy” on Wednesday, March 7, at 7:30 pm in Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall (PAC 134) on the Chico State campus. Southern Unionism took many forms, notes Tinkler. “First, not all slave states seceded -Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri all remained loyal to the Union. Second, within Confederate states, pockets of white southerners opposed secession and often opposed the new Confederate government.” The Appalachian region, where slaveholders made up a very small part of the population, proved particularly troublesome to Confederate authorities, said Tinkler. “Indeed, the mountainous western counties of Virginia formed the Union state of West Virginia during the war, and thousands of southern white men from the highlands, and other regions, volunteered to serve in the U.S. military and fight against the Confederates.” A final example of southern Unionism, one often overlooked even by historians, is the service of individuals from Confederate states in the U.S. Congress, both House and Senate, during the war. “Eleven men from three Confederate states -- Louisiana, Tennessee, and Virginia -- served in the U.S. House and four from two states -- Tennessee and Virginia -- sat in the U.S. Senate during the conflict.” Professor Tinkler’s lecture is supported by the History Department, the School of the Arts, and the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at CSU, Chico. For more information, call the Department of History Office at 898-4284.

CSU, Chico to Stage Production of Slawomir Mrozek’s Political Farce, “Vatzlav,” Feb. 29-March 4 in Harlen Adams Theatre
“Meet the new boss -- same as the old boss.” The Who’s immortal lyric from the song “Won’t Get Fooled Again” in a nutshell describes Polish playwright Slawomir Mrozek’s political farce, “Vatzlav,” CSU, Chico’s main stage theatre production for the spring semester. Staged February 29-March 3 at 7:30 p.m. and March 4 at 2 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre, “Vatzlav” is based on Mrozek’s experiences as a 1970 emigree from communist eastern Europe into the free wheeling democracies of western Europe. “It is a story about his own experiences where his alter ego – Vatzlav -- struggles to succeed as a free man within the tyranny of a free enterprise system every bit as ruthless as the totalitarian system he fled from,” notes director William Johnson, Department of Theatre faulty member. In the play a ship-wrecked slave named Vatzlav washes ashore in a foreign country and sets off to enjoy the money, power, glory and happiness he’s entitled to as a free man, or so he thinks. What he hasn’t counted on, though, is old blind Oedipus; an invading army of sadists; a genius professor who pimps out his daughter, Justice; a day job as a talking bear; and his bosses, Mr. and Mrs. Bat, the blood-sucking vampire rulers of his new homeland. “In the play we go from the world of the American Dream into an American Nightmare,” said Johnson. CSU, Chico’s production of “Vatzlav” will be very cartoony, theatrical, with commedia character half masks. Joining Johnson in the production of the play is Department of Theatre faculty and staff members Daniel Schindler (scenic design); Sandra Barton (costume design); Katie Whitlock (sound design); and theatre student Mike Anderson (lighting design). Actors include some of Chico State’s most talented student performers: Janette Wallen, Murphy Mayer, Ashley Garlick, Ernie Rosales, Kelly Reynolds, Eric Wilhite, Michelle Jace , Madison Kisst, Stacy Park, Nate Whitaker, Allison Morrow, Francesca Gamez, Jennifer Garlock, and Kelly Kassir. Johnson said this is not a play to bring the children to, even though they would probably enjoy its theatricality. “Kids might like it, but their parents probably wouldn’t want them to see it. There is a lot of sexual innuendo and some darker episodes of violence in the second act.” Johnson calls “Vatzlav” “a brilliant, political farce by one of Poland’s greatest playwrights.” He hopes the audience makes the connection with what is happening in the play with what is going on in the present day world. “It’s been said that Mrozek’s answer to contemporary reality is laughter,” noted Johnson. “This play is a political farce — lots of laughs focused to expose and illuminate some very serious issues, namely the disconnect in our contemporary political and social conversations between logic, common sense and the self-serving, hyperbolic rhetoric of political debate. We make arguments these days to reason our way to the conclusions we already have decided we want, despite actual logic, facts or truth.” Advance tickets for “Vatzlav,” at $15 adults, $13 seniors, and $6 students, are available at the University Box Office, 898-6333; add $2 for tickets purchased at the door. For disability-related seating please call 898-4325.

Better Home Organization Can Save You Money
(StatePoint) Did you know that a disorganized household can cost your family money? From failing to make necessary repairs before it’s too late, to mismanaging the household budget, there can be a high price to disorganization. Don’t accrue unnecessary expenses that could be avoided by simply streamlining your household. “The key to running a happy home is having a system to keep everything neat and orderly,” says Elizabeth Dodson, Cofounder of HomeZada, a revolutionary home organization online software application. There’s no better time than spring to do some house cleaning and get your home life in order. Here are some tips to get you started: Maintain Each year, 15,600 dryer fires occur, resulting in property damage exceeding $75 million. And the leading cause is lack of maintenance. Preserve the overall value of your largest asset, your home, with regular maintenance of your house and appliances. An online program can secure documentation and help you keep details straight, such as when you last tested your smoke detectors or replaced your air filters. Track In this digital day and age, make paper tracking of your families’ schedule and to-do lists a thing of the past. By going digital, it will be harder to make costly mistakes like missed appointments, and overdue bills. Online organizational tools are replacing the chore wheel, the calendar and the message board, consolidating all this information in one place. Opt for a safe and secure service that sends alerts and reminders to users about what tasks needs to get done. For example, HomeZada makes it easy for a family to create a plan, assign chores, and get on the same page. Plan Ahead Nobody likes to think about challenges like burglaries, fires, and floods. But these things can and do happen, so it’s best to be prepared for anything. Unfortunately, most people have incomplete records about their home and possessions, and often, this information is scattered in multiple boxes, filing cabinets, drawers and spreadsheets. An online tracking tool can help you maximize your insurance benefits in the event of emergency, by storing the important details of your possessions in one place. Look for a service that even will let you track upcoming warranty expiration dates, sending you reminders to your phone or email. More tips on what to look for in an online home management tool can be found at www.homezada.com . When it comes to running an organized household, there are a lot of moving parts. But by getting them together today, you can save your family money and headaches tomorrow.

Optimism May Improve Your Health And Success
(StatePoint) People don’t often think about how optimism impacts their lifestyle, career and relationships. But a positive attitude can help you avoid stressful situations, maintain better health, and may even allow you to heal more quickly when you aren’t feeling well, according to some experts. “Optimism and the desire to be successful are the basis for a person’s happiness and good health,” asserts Elena Korneeva, a psychophysiologist and author of the new book “Breath of Life.” As a specialist, Korneeva promotes a happier, healthier life with these guiding principles: • Joyful inspired and outspoken people make great company. These traits will attract people to you in both professional and personal settings. • Laugh. People with a good sense of humor are the life of any party, at any age and in any social stratum. • One who can sincerely laugh at his or her own mistakes can overcome most difficulties. A sense of humor is a trait of a harmonious person. • Make an effort to truly understand and empathize with your conversation partners. • Don’t be afraid of situations that haven’t even happened yet. By avoiding fear of the unknown, you can better focus on a positive solution, rather than the problem. • Optimism and humor will make you a better parent. With these tools, your children will bring you joy rather than try your patience. Positive and creative parenting yields positive and creative children. • An integral part of success is a healthy lifestyle, absent of bad habits. Eat varied, small meals four-to-five times a day, get sound sleep, and take part in sports and leisure activities you love. • There are no boundaries or limits to your pursuit of self-perfection. Success is often very close at hand, but by emphasizing difficulties in our lives, we neglect to focus on our strengths. “With optimism we fill our life with new meaning, and it helps us find a way out of a circle of troubles,” says Korneeva. “The key to happiness is in our hands.”

How To Get Your Family To Eat More Whole Grain Foods
(StatePoint) Most people want to make healthy eating decisions, but there are lots of messages vying for attention in supermarkets. This is especially true when it comes to following the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommendation to choose products with whole grain as the first ingredient. According to Dr. Travis Stork, emergency room physician and host of “The Doctors,” shoppers can find nutritional cues on the front of food boxes, but also should read the Nutrition Fact panels on their sides. When it comes to whole grain, look for the words “whole grain” as the first ingredient in the ingredient list. Ingredient lists detail ingredients in order of prevalence. If the first ingredient has the word “whole” or “whole grain” followed by a grain like wheat or oats, it means the food contains more whole grain than any other single ingredient. “One of the best ways to boost whole grain intake is to examine the products your family already loves, and look for the ones that have a whole grain at the top of the ingredient list,” said Stork. For example, when it comes to breakfast, more than 50 cereals with the white check, like Cheerios and Kix, now have more whole grain than any other single ingredient -- with the same great taste. These cereals also list the grams of whole grain per serving on the side of their boxes. Whole grain is an important part of a healthy diet. In connection with healthier lifestyles, a diet rich in whole grain has been linked to healthier body weights, and it may help reduce the risk of heart disease and certain cancers. According to the Dietary Guidelines, more than 95 percent

SOLUTION

of Americans don’t get the recommended amount of whole grain. Dr. Stork recommends these tips for finding whole grain and stocking your pantry with the right food: • Start Early! The Dietary Guidelines recommend people get at least 48 grams of whole grain in their daily diets. Get a jump on the day’s nutrition by incorporating whole grain into your morning routine. When choosing cereal make sure whole grain is listed as the first ingredient. One easy choice is cereal with the white check, which has more whole grain than any other single ingredient. • Make Simple Swaps. Choose whole grain versions of foods you love. Great options include whole wheat pasta and whole wheat bread or whole grain crackers. Also, try different types of whole grain. Use brown rice instead of white rice as a side dish at dinner or popcorn, which is a whole grain, for a snack. • Don’t Judge a Food by Its Cover. The front of food packages provide good nutritional cues, but remember to read the ingredients and check nutrition labels and side labels for additional health information. Cereals with the white check even include the amount of whole grain per serving on packaging. For more about adding whole grain to your diet visit WholeGrainNation.com . Remember, eating right starts with what you put into your shopping cart.

The

Newcomer ~della bacon
and beer should be available by next month. Do you believe in “Like Father, like son. Like Mother, like daughter.” Yes or No. Some things are handed down from generation to generation. What about talent? I have discovered Lucenda comes from a long line of restaurant owners. Her Dad, James Hawthrone taught his children well. I used to drop by Jim’s Cafe in Palo Alto, many years ago, on my way to work. Only recently I’ve learned Hawthrone later came to Oroville and opened another Jim’s Cafe on Feather River Blvd. (That was 25 years ago.) Now I’m told JIM-BO, who started out as a cook at the Blueberry Twist and purchased the Iron Village about 10 years ago, is not only the son of Jim’s Cafe, but also Lucenda’s brother. That’s right! It’s become a family affair. Oroville is going Gourmet. Check out The Depot Steak House—it’s opening this week, with a brand-new lobster tank. Spring is busting out all over. That must be why The Brinton Family who owned and operated The Hof Brau on Fifth Avenue, have moved into their new building, formerly Checker’s Italian Restaurant on Table Mountain Blvd. They have been around for fifty years and are still feeding the working man with hardy, well-balanced meals. Talking about new ... Righteous Burgers is new to me, and located on Olive Hwy., across from Ambee’s Bloomers, only a couple of blocks away from Mike’s Burgers. Watch for opening of The Bird Street Cafe. I haven’t seen the menu yet, but am anxious to sample their wares. Did you know Don’s Billard’s building, located next to the Attic is full of family heirlooms. That’s right, Don’s not there, but his family is and they have set up thrift-type store full of family heirlooms. Fascinating display of collectibles. Check it out, and tell them The Newcomer sent you. At the Birdcage Theatre is “Scheherazade” Legend of The Arabian Nights by Susan Pargman. It is a blend of comedy, magic, revenge and mystery. Starring Samantha Sanz and David Glover, as well as a cast of 32 talented young people in delightful costumes that glitter and shine. You really must see it, to believe it. Very interesting. Be sure to mark your calendar for “Guys & Dolls” musical opening at The Birdcage on March 30th. Get your tickets early. Copa de Oro Event Center is having an Open House. Everyone is welcome Friday March 10th, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, call 533 3902. There is going to be a Murder on the Grill, a whodunit fun night. Dinner prepared by Blondie’s Diner on Saturday, March 24th. Cocktail hour starts at 5 p.m. The show begins at 6 p.m. Cost $30. Come dressed in 1950’s attire. Prizes and surprises for the best costumes. Well folks, just want you to know it is a small world, and a beautiful town full of talented people. This community keeps coming together to make things happen. Like I have said before: “I admire anyone who has the courage to open a business, run a business, and then get involved in the community.” Since we all had different mothers, and came from different walks of life, we have different ideas and ideals. How great it is to see so many families working together to make a fantastic impression. One has to love what they do, do what they love, to move forward with a supportive mate. I personally believe the food business is one of the toughest to conquer. My hats off to those who have succeeded!

There is no doubt about it, “To succeed in owning and operating a business takes a lot of work, dedication, and stick-to-itness.” The ups and downs of the economy are a factor. The emotional support of the immediate family is another factor. It’s tough to be the Boss, especially when it comes to hiring, firing, and paying the bills. Although my Mother always said, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,” I happen to think the toughest way to make a living is in the restaurant business. Tong Fong Low, (formerly known as Charlie’s Chop Suey) is the oldest, individually owned business in Oroville. This year they are celebrating 100 years in business. Sandy Wong, the owner, was born in China, raised in San Francisco, and is not nearly a 100 years old. However, she is a relative to the original owner (third generation). Although I have only lived in Oroville for 5 years, I heard of Tong Fong Low about 30 years ago, (from my new secretary, Phyllis Lightle). Later, when I came to visit my children, who had moved here, we headed for Charlie’s Chop Suey. What I heard then, is still true today: “Wong knows her clientele, refers to them by name, and always has a beautiful smile. The food is great, the service is excellent, the prices are right, and the quantity begs for take-home containers.” Congratulations, Sandy Wong! Keep up the great work! We know you love what you do, and do what you love. And, what a great staff! Celebrating the First Friday of each month is a tradition in Historic Downtown Oroville. Stores are open late, sales racks of clothing, musical instruments, knick-knacks and decor are often displayed on the sidewalks, at reduced prices. Most of the merchants live up to the “If you don’t see it, ask” rule. “We’ll get it!” And because this community practices what it preaches: The Fun Starts Here. There is usually music provided by Houser’s with pedestrians dancing in the streets. Even the YMCA group gathers for fun and games to thrill the children. The parade of classy and classic automobiles that have been re-built, re-finished, and re-furbished is always fascinating. The stories told by the owners, as to the how-it-began, and why, fills me with nostalgia. The First Friday event starts around 3 p.m. and ends when the crowd thins out, around 7 p.m. The merchants provide candy, cookies, small treats. The Local Artists host a small reception and a display of talent, culture and hospitality. A walk around town often makes me hungry and anxious. If that happens to you, I suggest you drop by Luceddie’s on Montgomery Street, near Myers and across from the municipal parking lot. There is a lot of history in that building, including the folks who are turning it into a dream come true for their family. Starting with the name, Luceddie’s: His name is Eddie, her name is Lucenda. Why not name the restaurant Lucenda’s or Eddie’s? The story goes that they compromised. That’s how they got to Luceddie’s. Lunch at Luceddies was interesting because I got to meet Paul Robie and Sunday Kilgore, from Oroville Hospital, who encouraged me to order a healthy salad. Gerald Stokes from the Edward Jones office, stopped by the table, just to say, “Hi”. Then Shyla told me she was celebrating her birthday, but wouldn’t tell me her age. Waitresses Carrie and Abbey took good care of our table. The food was great, the service was excellent, and the prices were very fair. Wine
