BASIC TROUBLESHOOTING HANDOUT

1. If your Mouse is not Working - check this: - Cable connection to computer - Pins bent on mouse connector - Mouse ball missing - Mouse ball/rollers have dirt built up on them - Mouse buttons have dirt built on them - Do this: Turn system off plug in a different nd mouse turn system back on (confirm the 2 mouse works on another system) - cmos setting - Software driver - Virus 2. If your Keyboard is not working - check this: - Cable connection to computer - Pins bent on keyboard connector - Keys sticking or not working due to the dirt built up - Spilled liquid in keyboard - Do this: Turn system off plug in a different keyboard turn system back on (confirm the nd 2 keyboard works on another system) - Software driver (if applicable) - Virus 3. If your CPU Fan is not working check this: - Cable connection to computer - Dust built up around fan 4. If your Floppy drive is not working check this: - Cable connection inside of computer - Cmos setting - Incorrect media inserted in drive - Paper or other object inserted in drive - Floppy drive needs cleaning - Virus on System 5. If you CD-ROM is not working check this: - Cable connection inside of computer - Cmos setting - CD-ROM drive needs cleaning - Belt popped off CD-ROM drive - Jumper setting not correct - Virus 6. If your Hard Drive is not working check this: - Cable connection inside of computer - Cmos setting - Boot sector modified need to recopy the system files over - Need to fdisk and format - Virus 7. If your Hard Drive is working, but getting drive errors Do this: - Run scandisk hard drive - Run defrag hard drive - Check cable connection inside of computer - Fdisk and format - Run the registry checker - Check the power supply (only for multiple errors) - Virus 8. If you cannot find Boot Device check this: - See section on floppy drive not working - See section on hard drive not working - Cmos setting on boot order - Non bootable diskette in floppy - Need to recopy the boot sector to hard drive using system command - Fdisk and format with options set to copy system files to hard drive - Virus 9. If you have no audio from speakers Check this: - speakers cable connection to audio out port on audio card - Power to speakers and speakers being turned on - Speakers muted or master volume control is set to low - Reset sound card in computer - Audio cable from CD-ROM to sound card connection - Drivers for sound card - Virus 10. If you have no power to the system check this: - Powers source from building - Power strip - Power cord firmly inserted into the power supply - Manual red switch is set to 115V - Manual switch on back of power supply - Power supply full of dust - On atx systems on/off switch cable connection inside of computer 11. If you have no power to monitor check this: - On/off switch to monitor - Powers source from building - Power strip - Power cord firmly inserted into monitor 12. If you have no display check this: - Cable connection from monitor to video card - Check no power to monitor (see above section on this) - Check no power to system (see above section on this) - Adjust monitor contract and brightness controls - Turn system off plug in a different monitor nd turn system back on (confirm the 2 monitor works on another system) - Unplug keyboard, mouse and power system on - Reset video card inside of computer - Reset memory - Reset CPU - Pull all cards out except for video - Clear the cmos - Virus
