Student Society Newspaper - meeting Tuesday the 13 at the restaurant form 12:45 - 2:30 Students, Alumni, Staff, visitors,

and everyone else, Over my stay here in Nepal I've often times had the thought that it would be a great opportunity to offer the students of Rangjung Yeshe Institute a means to express their ideas and to present a unique blend of information from the varied minds and personalities that represent RYI's student body, and to give students the opportunity to work and gain experience as well as have articles and content published with a byline which can be used in CV Letters and Resumes. After looking into the logistics of starting a student newspaper, and after some discussion revolving around the publication, the green light has been given and it's a go for launch. Tentatively the newspaper is currently being called "The Student" and production of the first issue is currently in the works, and although the first issue is slated for publication, no date has been set as of yet, due to the necessity for writers, editors, and submissions to and for the newspaper. With this in mind, I would like to ask all of you for your help, your ideas, thoughts, stories, photos, articles, editorials and a little bit of hard-work and diligence would be greatly appreciated on the paper. How the Newspaper will work: The idea of the newspaper would be a small, four page, bi-monthly, student run and operated publication, with a student chosen Editor, Sectional Editors; News, Features, Arts, Entertainment, as well as a Photographer, Publication Designer, Advertisement Manager, Newspaper Adviser. The newspaper will be delivered to students and others wishing to join the mailing list through .pdf format in order to remain environmentally conscious newspaper. A limited number of the newspapers will be physically printed and placed around the campus; restaurant, library, etc. , and at local business frequented by students. The content of the newspaper will feature a page which captures relevant news stories which pertain to student life in Nepal and studying at RYI institute. Followed by a features page which will host student columnists, and will highlight a broad range of subjects from visiting professors, restaurants to classes on buddhist philosophy and traveling through Nepal. The Arts section will highlight current, upcoming and ongoing artistic events in RYI and around Kathmandu / Nepal, with an emphasis on student art and artists. The Entertainment section will be host to a number of activities, including an events calendar, student submitted content, cartoons, poems, etc., as well as a (Free to students and affiliates of RYI) classified section. Positions and Responsibility: The Editor would be responsible for all content published in the newspaper, the editors and other newspaper positions, and supplying the Publication Designer with all content in a timely fashion so that the newspaper can be published effectively. Sectional Editors would then be responsible for finding content, assigning stories to reporters and editors, as well as editing content and choosing it's relevance and appropriateness for publication in the newspaper, in addition to taking responsibility for published contents accuracy and relevance to the RYI student body.

The Publication Designer would be responsible for design and placing of content into the newspaper. The Advertising Manager would be responsible for selling and placing of ads into the newspaper. The Newspaper Adviser would be responsible for advising the editor and staff of the newspaper as well as making sure accurate reporting and Associated Style is used. The Editor would be chosen by a student vote, or in event of necessity, appointed by the Student Society Chairmen. Although the positions as presented above seem like a lot of work, due to the small nature of the newspaper, multiple positions can be held by the same person, due to their relative ease and lack of responsibility. And due to the relatively small nature of the publication, the amount of content that will be feasible to put into the newspaper will be fairly limited, the editorial staff will be responsible for choosing relevant and time sensitive content. Meeting, questions and comments: On Tuesday March 13, at 12:45 - 2:30 in the Shedra Restaurant, a meeting will be held to appoint editor positions, choose the name of the newspaper and discuss stories, content for the first publication. For information regarding the newspaper, submissions, ideas, questions, etc., please contact: shedrastudentnews.editor@gmail.com Thank you all very much, please come write for us! Sincerely, -Sandy Wilcox
