GAS DETECTION AND SAFETY SHUT-OFF SYSTEMS Introduction 1.1.1 Under this section the contractor shall include a Prime Cost Sum, as indicated in the Summary of Tender, for the supply and commissioning of the following gas proving / detection system as indicated on the drawings and as specified below. Gas Leak Detection System - Boiler House Gas Leak Detection System - Laundry Ventilation and Gas Proving System Kitchen Main Slam Shut Valve 1.1.2 All gas detection equipment shall comply with BS EN 50081 Part 1 and BS EN 50082 Part 1.

1.2

Installation of Gas Valves 1.2.1 In all cases the slam shut valve shall be installed by the mechanical contractor on the project or where there is no mechanical contractor, the valve shall be installed by a Registered Gas Installer

1.3

Fire Alarm Interface 1.3.1 Each Gas Detection Panel must have the facility to accept a volt free input from the Fire Alarm System via a local interface unit. Where this facility is not available then local interface unit, in conjunction with a suitably rated relay, shall break the 230VAC supply to the slam shut valve so that in the event of fire being detected the slam shut valve shall open.

1.4

Gas Leak Detection System - Boiler House and Laundry 1.4.1 The contractor shall include for the supply and installation of the Gas Leak Detection System in the boiler house. 1.4.2 The system shall be designed to provide constant monitoring for elevated gas levels within the designated area and provide an alarm and close the slam shut valve in the event of a leak or high levels of gas in the atmosphere etc 1.4.3 1.4.4 In accordance with IS820:2000 The system shall comprise the following:

Control panel, Remote mounted gas sensor(s) and 230v gas solenoid valve 50mm - Boilerhouse (Refer to requirements below) 230v gas solenoid valve 25mm Laundry (Refer to requirements below) 1.4.5 The panel shall be wall mounted with emergency knock-off button, reset button, mute button and LED indication for power, alarm condition, gas-on, emergency stop and alerts.

1.4.6 The panel to have potential free relay output for the BMS and terminals to allow the connection of additional emergency stops such as the fire alarm system interface as described above 1.4.7 If an alarm begins (at 5% LEL) then the pre-alarm light shall illuminate and the unit shall emit a beep but the valve will remain open. If the gas levels continue to rise the panel shall go to high alarm (at 10% LEL), a constant buzzer will sound and the valve will close. The light on the sensor concerned will also turn from green to red confirming the location of the alarm. 1.4.8 The System shall be as manufactured by Medem, model AGDS-2 as supplied by Modern Plant Limited 1.5 Ventilation and Gas Proving System for Kitchen 1.5.1 The contractor shall include for the supply and installation of a ventilation and gas proving system to the Kitchen as indicated on the drawings or as specified below. 1.5.2 The system shall be designed specifically for use in kitchens and catering areas where gas is used and shall comply fully with BS6173:2001 1.5.3 The system shall ensure the interlocking and checking of the supply/extract fans with the gas supply before the gas is proven for use. The system shall comprise the following components Control Panel Differential pressure sender unit 230volt gas solenoid valve 32mm 2 No Fan current monitors 1.5.4 The Control Panel shall have LCD information display, integral emergency knock-off button, on/off switch and LED indication for power, alert, fan status and gas supply 1.5.5 The system will operate as soon as mains power is applied and the panel is switched on. Provided the fans are running the panel will then run the proving cycle to ensure the integrity of the gas pipework, hoses and appliances etc down stream of the solenoid valve. 1.5.6 The current monitors shall monitor the current to the supply and extract fans serving the Kitchen ventilation system. The sensitivity to current should be fully adjustable by means of a coarse and fine adjustment to be carried out at time of commissioning. 1.5.7 The Panel shall have an inbuilt selectable auto-stop function which shall be settable at 6/8/10/12 hours. 1.5.8 The panel shall include tightness test indication and slam shut valve let by functions. Gas pressure readings from both sides of the valve shall be displayed while these functions are being conducted.

1.5.9 The panel shall have a fan bypass override feature. Bypass time to be adjustable up to a maximum of 24 hrs. When in bypass mode the LCD display should indicate this status and inform the user the system is not operating to standards. 1.5.10 The system shall be VGPS-K system as manufactured by Medem as supplied by Modern Plant Limited. 1.6 Main Slam Shut Valve 1.6.1 A 65mm Main Slam Shut Valve shall be installed adjacent to the Gas meter. This valve shall be controlled only by the fire alarm system and will close automatically in the event of a 2nd stage fire alert. 1.7 Gas Slam Shut Valves 1.7.1 Gas slam shut valves (GSSVs) shall be solenoid operated safety shut-off valves manufactured strictly in accordance with EN 161 standards. Their primary application shall be the on/off control of low pressure 1st (town gas), 2nd (natural gas)and 3rd (LPG) family gases, i.e. town gas, natural gas and LPG. 1.7.2 The GSSV shall be CE Certificated and suitable for 230VAC electrical connection have the following features 230VAC electrical connection Flow Restrictor as standard Flow Regulation from 0 to 100% Full-wave Rectified Coil for quiet operation Normally Closed operation 200mbar maximum working pressure Available as Fast or Slow Opening Plugged pressure test points in both Inlet and Outlet Ports. 1.7.3 The valve construction shall be of an aluminium die-cast body with a maintenance free solenoid actuator. There shall be no user serviceable parts to the valve. 1.7.4 Once energised, the fast opening valve will open instantaneously whilst the slow opening valve will open within a user adjustable time span of up to 15 seconds. 1.7.5 Once voltage is removed, the valves shall close in less than 1 second. Manual intervention shall be required to reopen the valve after removal of the supply voltage. To reenergize the valve a switch must be momentarily depressed to allow power to the valve, latching the reset switch in the on position and allowing the valve to open. A remote reset switch facility shall be available, 1.7.6 All valves shall have a fine mesh filter incorporated which shall prevent dirty contamination of the seal seat. 1.7.7 Valve connections shall depend on valve sizes as follows. Valves shall be Threaded to ISO 228/1 from Rp 3/8 to Rp 2 and flanged PN 16 to ISO 7005 from DN 65 to DN 150.

1.7.8 All slam shut valves must be installed indoors in line with manufacturers requirements. If a slam shut valve is to be located outdoors in must be protected from the environment and prior approval must be sought from the Engineer. 1.7.9 Maximum operating pressure of slam shut valves shall be 200mbar. Pressure greater than this shall not be admitted to the slam shut valve.
