ddie Stobart and A. W. Jenkinson Forest Products have once again signed a joint-procurement agreement with Scania in the UK for the supply of 1000 trucks. This deal mirrors the order placed by the two operators in 2010, which at the time represented Scanias largest ever supply agreement in the UK. Scheduled for delivery between March 2012 and December 2013, approximately 300 units will enter service this year. As with the previous order, the mix of vehicles will comprise mainly Scania R-series prime movers but will also include a significant number of Scania G-series models. This agreement reflects our ongoing satisfaction with Scania and the levels of support provided by the companys dealer network, explained Stobart Group Chief Operating Officer,

William Stobart. Scanias focus on ongoing development will allow Eddie Stobart to continue to provide sustainable distribution and the usual high levels of service to its customers. Over the past two years, the partnership between Eddie Stobart, A. W. Jenkinson and Scania has continued to develop positively, said Hans-Christer Holgersson, Managing Director of Scania in Great Britain. Winning such a significant repeat order not only demonstrates that our products meet the operational needs of these two high profile customers day-in day-out, but also the capabilities of our service organisation when it comes to providing a comprehensive range of back-up services on such a large geographical scale. Eddie Stobart, part of Stobart

Group, is one of the most recognised and strongest brands in Britain, best known for its iconic green trucks. Today, Eddie Stobart is the name behind a road haulage fleet of 2280 and some of the best vehicle utilisation in the industry, helping to maximise efficiency and environmental benefits. A.W. Jenkinson Forest Products and its subsidiaries handle over 2 million tonnes of green waste, roundwood, chips, sawdust, bark and other timber co-products each year, collected from forestry sites, sawmills and other wood processing industries throughout the UK. The company is the largest UK supplier of woodchip and bark products. In 2011, Scanias share of the UK heavy truck market was 14 per cent and its combined bus and coach market share amounted to 8.1%.

INDUSTRY NEWS
Bransgrove and Dyer receive Medals of the Order of Australia

INDUSTRY NEWS
Mack reduces environmental impact

ola Bransgrove and Graeme Dyer, who run Traralgon-based transport business Branstrans, were awarded Medals of the Order of Australia for services to road transport in the 2012 Australia Day Honours List. Nola has made an enormous contribution to the trucking industry, said Stuart St Clair, Chief Executive of the Australian Trucking Association (ATA). She won the National Trucking Industry Woman of the Year Award in 1997, after serving on the boards of two trucking industry associations. She also looked after the superannuation of trucking industry employees as a director of the Transport Industry Superannuation Fund from 1996 to 2009, and has been steadfast in promoting the role of women in the industry. Nola was the chair of Transport Women Australia from 2001 to 2004. In 2009, she was appointed as the inaugural chair of the Victorian Governments Transport and Logistics Workforce Advisory

Group. Meanwhile, her company, Branstrans, is accredited under the ATAs TruckSafe program, which puts it amongst the safest and best-managed trucking businesses in the country, he added. Mr St Clair said Graeme Dyer had been the managing director of Dyers Gippsland Transport since the 1950s. As well as running Dyers Transport, Graeme has made

a valuable contribution to the Gippsland community and road safety education, said Mr St Clair. He was a Sale city councillor from 1991 to 1994, and has been an active member of the Sale Rotary Club since 1972. Graeme also sponsored the ATAs Safety Education Trailer when it visited Gippsland to provide young people with tips about how to share the road safely with trucks.

Volvo Truck deliveries rise 53 per cent

olvo Trucks December deliveries increased 27 per cent year-on-year to 11,882 trucks. For the full year 2011, deliveries rose 53 per cent to 115,346 trucks. In total, deliveries in Europe amounted to 4394 trucks in December, an increase of 8 per cent over the corresponding period of 2010. However, the uncertain macro-economic situation continued to affect truck customers, who have become slightly more cautious.

In Russia, meanwhile, deliveries remained positive and increased by 90 per cent to 878 trucks, compared with December 2010. A strong Russian economy contributed to a solid demand for trucks. As a whole, deliveries in Eastern Europe increased by 41 per cent in December. Also, the Benelux countries (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg) had a positive trend regarding deliveries in December.

In Brazil, deliveries rose 22 per cent in December, compared with the corresponding period of 2010. And for all of South America deliveries rose 32 per cent to 2618 trucks. In North America, December deliveries rose 62 per cent compared with December 2010 to 2690 trucks. The low fuel consumption through the combination of proprietary engines and the I-shift transmission continued to have a very strong customer impact.

he introduction of the Mack MP10 SCR engine into the Super-Liner and Titan models this year will make Mack the first conventional truck manufacturer in Australia to offer SCR engines across the entire model range. Mack Trucks Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology is designed to assist operators in reducing their impact on the environment and the bottom line. And, as a result of this technology, all of the companys models now offer more power and torque, improved fuel economy and longer service intervals. In 2011, Mack introduced SCR technology to its Metro-Liner, Granite and Trident models as a solution to ADR80/03. The aim was to clean exhaust gases to the best level ever, while at the same time increasing power and torque.

Further to this, SCR, which is North Americas most popular emissions technology, enabled Mack to offer industry leading service intervals and fuel economy a benefit now offered across the entire product range. Fleet operators around the country are constantly looking for ways to increase profit margins to help overcome increasing fuel prices. As well as minimising emissions, the other benefit of SCR is that fuel usage is reduced. Increasing fuel prices have a significant impact on the bottom line of many operators, especially in long-distance line-haul where the kilometres covered and the fuel used per year are huge. Mack has adapted its product offering to accommodate the requirements of these customers perfectly and strengthen what we have to offer within this segment,

said Vice President of Mack Trucks, Dean Bestwick. To assist Mack operators get the most from their investment, we also have a dedicated Customer Product Trainer. This service, along with new driver enhancements, like the mDRIVE automated transmission, means fuel efficient driving is optimised great for the bottom line, he added. As part of the AB Volvo Group, Mack Trucks has been able to leverage the engineering capabilities and technology platforms of this global organisation and introduce SCR into its product with minimum risk and maximum efficiency. The MP8 SCR and MP10 SCR engines are both designed to be integrated with the Mack mDRIVE automated manual transmission for maximum fuel savings and environmental benefits.

Australias transport industry on TV
One of the oldest vehicles to be shown however, will be a 1940 International KS 5. This Ol Sweetheart was used by A. Jack Turner in Victorias Notting Hill area. These trucks and many more will be on display near the Nicholas Pavilion and the Agricultural Hall.

he commercial road transport industry has continued to keep Australia moving for decades upon decades. And, while the trucks used to transport goods across the country have continued to evolve as a result of technological developments, safety advancements and upgrades in design and capabilities, it is important to remember the trucks that, in many ways, helped to shape the industry as we know it. A special collection of trucks from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s will be showcased during the 2012 ITTES. Among these trucks will be a 1966 International R190. This model first rose to fame during the 1950s and was once one of the most common trucks seen running along the highways of Australia. The model being displayed once belonded to the Linfox fleet and still proudly wears

its yellow and red livery. A unique and very rare red 1952 International L205 is also likely to generate much interest among visitors. Although this truck played an important part in Americas trucking history, it was never actually released into the Australian market.

oxtel recently announced the launch of a new factual entertainment channel called A&E on 16 February 2012, featuring Queensland-based transport company Heavy Haulage Australia. Recognising a unique opportunity to create a new channel amongst the Foxtel Channels Group, targeting a new younger skewing male audience, A&E will deliver a range of exclusive unscripted series in High Definition. A&E champions genuine, passionate and fearless risk takers who continually push their boundaries providing thrill and anticipation. These real life series centre on the high stakes lives of these captivating people whose risks are high and their rewards even greater, guaranteeing

that every show and every moment keeps you on the edge of your seat, Foxtel stated, revealing that one such series will feature Australias commercial road transport industry. According to Foxtel, A&E has already commissioned Cordell Jigsaw, creators of Bondi Rescue, to produce a onehour special called MegaTruckers. This uniquely Australian program will be part of the channels launch schedule on February 16 and will then be developed as a series to premiere later in 2012. MegaTruckers follows blue collar hero Jon Kelly, the man who built Heavy Haulage Australia from scratch, and his hard as nails drivers hauling some of the worlds largest and heaviest loads across the treacherous Australian terrain.

JAC joins Wheelans Group in NZ

AC is the latest brand to be added to one of New Zealands leading multi-franchise truck dealers, the Wheelans Group. Truck & Trailer Hire Ltd, part of the Wheelans Group, will be responsible for JAC sales, parts and service in four North Island regions trading as JAC Waikato in Hamilton and JAC Central in Gisborne, Wellington and Palmerston North. Jason Pecotic, CEO of JACs New Zealand and Australian importer WMC Group, said Wheelans Group will be instrumental in the growth of JAC in New Zealand. Wheelans Groups commitment to JAC is a massive coup for JAC. They are a

Melbourne Recamic retread factory fully accredited by Michelin

recognised and highly regarded name in the New Zealand truck industry and will give JAC great coverage in key centres through the North Island, said Mr Pecotic. Wheelans has a great reputation and JAC is looking forward to a long and prosperous relationship with the Group. JAC is undergoing significant expansion in New Zealand and Australia and Wheelans Group is a key plank in our expansion thanks to its reputation and loyal customer base in Wellington, Waikato and the Manawatu and East Coast regions. Wheelans Group sells and services four other major truck brands as well

as owning MF King - an industrial truck body and trailer manufacturer, Truck and Trailer Hire, Josam Wheel Alignment and Phil Wheelans Trucks and Vans. JAC truck sales will commence in Australia early in 2012 with a new Euro 5 spec range of light duty trucks. Since securing the distribution rights for JAC in Australia and NZ in 2010, WMC has established a new headquarters and distribution centre at Milperra in Sydneys South West to serve both its JAC and Higer operations and has been recruiting additional staff while building a strong dealer network to market its commercial vehicle range around Australia and New Zealand.

averton-based tyre expert Deverich is the first Michelin accredited Recamic retread factory in Victoria to be awarded Michelin Quality Systems accreditation. Deverich has met the highest standard of safety, manufacturing, training and environmental consciousness that Michelin expect to ensure the delivery of quality retreaded tyres, said Colin Brown, Michelin Retread Manager Australia/ New Zealand. Deverich has worked closely with Michelin to implement and maintain the new retreading standards required. This means they now have access to the very latest in Michelin

branded tread patterns that are exclusively available for use on Michelin casings - in effect they are now able to re-manufacture the Michelin casing. Through the accreditation process attached to the Michelin Quality Systems, Michelin is raising the bar in truck and bus tyre retreading, Colin explained. Michelin has set the standard required to become an accredited retread factory incredibly high to ensure we deliver our customers the best possible product. I congratulate the team at Deverich on achieving this accreditation and welcome our new partnership with them.

The Michelin Retread product incorporates the latest tyre technology to deliver significant benefits to truck and bus operators. Utilising the Michelin Multi-Life Strategy, Michelin Retread offers operators the lowest cost of ownership, improved safety, high quality and increased reliability backed by Michelin Technical support, he adds. Operators will also be able to make fuel savings and reduce their environmental impact. Our Quality Systems process, meanwhile, ensures the standard and quality of the service operators receive matches that of our products.

of the advantages of the truck Ive found from a buyers point of view is cost lower registration costs when compared to a bogey drive prime mover, and also less on replacement tyres, which are between five and six hundred dollars each on the drive axle. With a single drive there are four less tyres to replace. Also the manoeuvrability of that truck is great, you can get into really tight driveways, it basically spins on a dime. This first truck has been a trial for our business, and its really paid off. Being a single drive, we were worried about the weight, but with the power available, it has never been an issue. The truck also features an SCR emission control system, which requires the addition of AdBlue fluid. It wont necessarily translate to sales, but it gives the customer piece of mind that we are moving in the right direction. The new UD GK 400 is currently used to tow a 16 pallet trailer, which features its own stand alone refrigeration unit and fuel tank.

ydney family owned company, Freezex, recently added a new UD GK 400 to its fleet to assist in reducing operating costs. This is the first new UD truck to be purchased by the company. Freezex operates a fleet of 20 trucks from its Marsden Park temperature controlled warehouse, delivering over 500 pallets of products to over 80 venues daily, with the assistance

of subcontractors and an affiliate network. The business is managed by brothers Ben and Luke Howard-Bath. According to Ben, the move to the semiautomated 4x2 truck is a trial of the configuration, but all factors point to it being the future of the business. Comfort, cost and manoeuvrability are the big things for us, he said. One

Free satellite navigation and reversing camera for Hino 300 Series
ino Australia is offering the added bonus of free satellite navigation and a reversing camera to customers who purchase any new 300 Series model before 30 April this year. The Hino-Navteq truck-specific satellite navigation and sound-enabled infrared night vision reversing camera (normally plug-in options for Hinos marketleading multimedia unit) are being offered as part of a special 300 Series promotion from February. The addition of these special features makes the 300 Series even better value, according to Hino Australia Divisional Manager Product Strategy, Marketing and Dealer development, Alex Stewart. The 300 Series is already one of the most user-friendly and comfortable trucks on the road, and these extra accessories only add to its appeal and safety, he said. With safety of utmost importance at Hino, were making the most of technologies that improve a drivers ability to conduct their job more effectively. Adding our truck-specific sat-nav

assists the driver in planning a route that minimises the trucks impact on other road users. The night vision and sound-enabled reversing camera provides a level of rearward visibility not normally experienced by truck drivers, Mr Stewart said. The unique Hino-Navteq navigation system can be tailored to suit each individual truck or load, with the ability to input critical data such as the trucks height, weight and dangerous goods classification. The navigation system then calculates a

route that avoids low bridges, weightrestricted roads and dangerous goodsrestricted areas. It can also direct the driver in one of 17 different languages. The reversing camera is displayed on the multimedia units 6.1-inch highdefinition LCD display, and there is an option to add up to two additional cameras if required. Hino Australia became the first truck manufacturer in the world to include a digital audio broadcast (DAB+) multimedia unit as standard equipment across its range of trucks last year.

BOC opens $65 million LNG plant upgrade

ulk gas supplier BOC has opened its upgraded LNG plant in Victoria in a move it says will help provide low-emissions fuel for the trucking industry. The $65 million project in Dandenong is seen as a vital link in BOCs $200 million LNG highway which is being built along Australias eastern seaboard. The company says the plant, which took more than 18 months to build, has the capacity to produce up to 100 tonnes of LNG a day. It will form a crucial part in the LNG highway to fuel heavy road transport vehicles,

utilising a network of refuelling stations on major routes, BOCs South Pacific Managing Director South Pacific, Colin Isaac, said. To fuel the heavy vehicles along the east coast of Australia, BOC will be using the fuel processed from its micro LNG plant in Chinchilla in Queensland as well as using LNG from this state-of-the art new facility in Dandenong. Mr Isaac said LNG produces up to 20 percent less greenhouse gases compared with diesel and is a more cost efficient and environmentally

friendly fuel alternative for heavy vehicles. Unlike the price of diesel, which is linked to the highly volatile and unpredictable oil market, the price of LNG is more stable, allowing for better control of business budgeting.Mr Isaac said LNG plants will be built in other locations throughout Australia as part of a long-term plan to support the domestic gas industry. BOC opened a micro LNG plant in Tasmania in February last year, along with six refuelling stations across the island.

Modular AB triple

he Australian Trucking Association (ATA) has applied to the NSW government, on behalf of its members, to use modular AB-triples on a route through NSW from the Victoria to the Queensland border. This route follows current approved road train routes and would be for AB-triple combinations using standard component vehicles up to a maximum of 42.5 metres in length. The proposed route begins at Echuca on the Victorian border, and

then travels through Deniliquin, Hay, Goolgowi, Hillston, Cobar and Bourke on its way through NSW. The route then finishes at Barringun on the Queensland border. This is the first time the ATA has applied for a route approval directly. If approved this route would then be available to all operators, said ATA National Policy Manager, David Coonan. The obvious benefit of this route would be the ability to use the higher

productivity vehicle combinations through NSW. In addition to this, when considering a freight task, these higher efficiency combinations mean an overall reduction in fuel consumption and road wear along this route. Another advantage of the ATAs application is that if the route is not approved due to problems with the roads or bridges, then we can take those problems directly to the NSW and Australian governments and seek funding to get them fixed.

Glare
Horizontally reflected light such as sunlight or artificial light including car headlamps can create annoying and sometimes dangerous glare. Glare can be extremely dangerous even in foggy or overcast conditions. Kenworth sunglasses cut glare and aid in reducing user eye-strain.

GoinG the

next step
Swedish truck manufacturer, Scania, has already made some euro 6 trucks available on the european market well ahead of its introduction in 2013. tim Giles speaks to the engineer responsible for the new models engine at the companys HQ.

Theres more to sunglasses than meets the eye

True to its word
having to use diesel particulate filters (DPF). the authorities did not like that, they wanted to push diesel particulate filters on all diesel vehicles. So they added in the particulate number count. So the industry was forced to add particulate filters. DPFs add maintenance costs, exhaust back pressures and a further loss in fuel efficiency. the new european legislation also specified a new World harmonised test cycle to be used when assessing trucks for the new regulations. the new test includes much more simulated city driving, and tests both cold and warm engines. this increases the level of difficulty for the truck manufacturers as DPFs have to work even harder in stop start operation. the new test cycle is the toughest of its kind in the world, surpassing the strict Japanese testing procedures. in the past higher particulate matter levels were allowed in transient cycles with lower levels specified when the vehicle was stationary. the cleanliness of the new exhaust gas particulate filters can be demonstrated by the fact the paper filters are completely clean after 30 minutes operation when compared with the same filter from a euro 5 engine. Further proof of the much improved particulate matter output in the euro 6 engines is in the fact the new exhaust pipes are completely clean inside and over time will become rusty rather than dirty. Politicians are not supposed to push technology but they have clearly done that in this case, says Bjorn. We now have to deal with a regulation which limits us to 800 billion particles per kilowatt hour. this is hard to count, and measurement technology has been tough to develop to meet this new part of the rules. however, we do believe that euro 6 is the last major step in the reduction of particulates in exhaust gases. We think the next step in exhaust emission regulation will concentrate on carbon dioxide. even without euro 6 we have seen a huge drop in the level of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter emitted by truck engines out on the roads. So far, Scania has released two engines from its range as euro 6, the 440 and 480 hp 13 litre. the company says its new engines will achieve the same fuel economy possible with its euro 5 product. this has been achieved by changing the eGR settings in a way that increases nitrogen oxide emissions but also increases fuel economy, running more efficiently. the increased nitrogen oxides are cleaned up by primemovermag.com.au 51.

he series of exhaust emission regulation changes of the past 20 years have come thick and fast. the latest emission reduction to affect europe will be introduced in 2013. euro 6 sees a reduction in nitrogen oxides allowed and a sizeable tightening on the amount of particulate matter in exhaust gases. Scanias development team in Sodertalje, just outside Stockholm in Sweden, explained to Prime Mover what has had to be done to the engine systems over the line to meet the latest regulations. euro 6 comes into effect as of 1 January 2013 for new models and extends to all truck models in europe on 1 January 2014. Scania has already released some of the new models onto the european truck market in anticipation of some october 2011

governments offering incentives to trucking operators who moved to the cleaner trucks earlier than they are mandated. Low emission incentives were effective in bringing forward the adoption of euro 5 technology in many countries in europe. however, no major european country has yet announced any measure, either reduced road tax or reduced road tolls. the european Union only recently finalised the euro 6 emission level figures first suggested in July 2009, giving truck manufacturers a tight deadline. Apart from the usual limits of allowable pollutants in exhaust gases, a new kind of limit was introduced. this restricts the number of individual particles permitted to be emitted. nitrogen oxides are reduced by 80% when compared to euro 5 levels, down to 0.4g per kilowatt hour. Particulate matter is halved to 0.01g per kilowatt

hour with carbon monoxide unchanged at 1.5 and hydrocarbons reduced by 75% to 0.13. euro 6 has been, and is, a challenge to us, says Bjorn Westman, Scanias engineering Director, head of engine Development. in practice, the mass limit for particulates has made the amount of particulate matter the engines can emit much smaller than the regulators imagined, i think. When we started looking at euro 6, particulate counting was not on the table. Different scenarios with nitrogen oxide levels and particulate matter mass were discussed along with their effects on fuel economy. the politicians set the limits knowing it would drive a 2% fuel economy penalty when compared to continuing with euro 5. it was clear to us it would be possible to achieve half the particular mass emissions without

Tailored FreighT was born Five and a halF years ago when Two besT maTes made The decision To sTarT Their own TransporT business To service The needs oF melbournes Fresh produce markeTs. and according To iTs Founders, The business has been based on qualiTy raTher Than quanTiTy From The very beginning.
As the son of highly regarded horse trainer John Hawkes of Hawkes Racing, Wayne Hawkes was surrounded by trucks from quite a young age and is now a well-known horse trainer himself. Since I was about 10 years of age, I travelled around the country with Goldners Horse Transport from Adelaide and thats how the trucks started for me, says Wayne. I always said I was going to own the biggest and best float company around but that went by the wayside and I became a horse trainer instead, before establishing Tailored Freight, so it all just marries together really well. The opportunity to start Tailored Freight arose when Waynes long time friend, Todd Moraitis, was working for his uncle Nick at the Melbourne fruit market. At the time Todd knew everything there is to know about fruit and vegetables so thats basically how it started, says Wayne, who began Tailored Freight with Todd in mid 2006. The business almost started overnight. Tailored Freight began with four employees and now employs 11. Based near the Argosy both of which still have their place in the fleet today. Before long, the demand placed on the two vehicles had increased and there was a need to implement a third vehicle within the first six months of the companys operations. This year another two vehicles were added to the a new supermarket depot was being built on the Albury and Wodonga border and Todds uncle needed to have some freight transported. Footscray market in Melbourne, Tailored Freight began its life with two B-doubles, towed by a second hand 2005 Mack Vision prime mover and a brand new Freightliner

fleet, bringing the total number of prime movers to five and the total number of trailers up to 11. Tailored Freight now operates nine insulated tautliners and two refrigerated pantech trailers which all operate as B-doubles, servicing the Melbourne, Wodonga and Shepparton districts as well as all the distribution centres in between. Fruit and vegetable cartage accounts for approximately 90 per cent of operations, while general cartage takes up the remaining 10 per cent. And while there has been several opportunities for the company to travel interstate, Wayne says that the companys fleet is geared to service the needs of Victoria. We dont want to be the biggest but we are trying to be the best, he says. It is easy to get too big and lose sight of the big picture. We are quite happy to stay around this sort of number of trucks. Every trailer in the fleet has been manufactured by Freighter, with all but one trailer purchased brand new. The most recent trailer purchased is a second hand Freighter trailer that has been completely refurbished. All vehicles in the fleet operate seven days a week and the business is open every day of the year except for Christmas Day and Good Friday. Horse training is no different to the fruit and vegetable market, it also runs seven days a week so the two work hand in hand, Wayne says.
