The 555 timers is a highly stable device for generating accurate time delay or oscillation. The pin diagram of NE555 timer is depicted in Fig.1 Astable multivibrator is one of the main applications of the 555 timers. Astable Multivibrator is an electronics circuit which generates square waves of its own without any external triggering pulse .The 555 timer is used to operates as Astable multivibrator.

Initially when the power supply is switched on, the external timing capacitor C charge towards Vcc through a resistor RA and RB when the capacitor voltage equal (2/3) V
cc

, the capacitor c starts

discharging towards ground through a resistor RB.During the discharge of the timing capacitor C, As it reaches Vcc/3 the capacitor C again charges towards 2/3 Vcc.This charging and discharging of the timing capacitor C continuously repeated. So Astable multivibrator is also called as freeing running multivibrator. The waveform for the Astable multivibrator is depicted in Fig3.
MONOSTABLE MULTIVIBRATOR:

The circuit has only one stable state. When trigger is applied it produces a pulse at the output and returns back to its stable state. The duration of the pulse depends on the values of R and C.As it has only one stable state, it is called one Shot multivibrator.

PROCEDURE: 1. The circuit connections are given as shown in Fig. (2). 2. Switch on the power supply. 3. The voltage across the capacitor (Vc) and the output voltage (Vo) waveforms are observed using the CRO. 4. The output voltage (Vo) waveform and the voltage across capacitor (vc) waveform as shown in Fig. (3)&(4).

DESIGN PROCEDURE:
i) ASTABLE: Let Vcc=10v; tc=1 ms; td=0.5ms

We have, tc=0.69(RA+RB) C and td=0.69RBC Let C=0.1 f; Then RA=RB=6.8K Choose c1=0.01 F
ii) MONOSTABLE:

Let Vcc=10V and T=1ms We have, T=1.1RC. Let C=0.1 F.Then R=10K Let Tt=3ms and Ci=0.01 F Then Ri=480. Choose Ci=0.01 F
