Joe Lombardi Mr. Diestler Western Civiization 4-9-10 Engineering the POSSIBLE We would accomplish many more things if we did not think of them as impossible.

exclaimed Vince Lombardi. I think that the people of Chartres, France new this and set out to prove that the impossible of the time was possible if you believed it enough. The cathedral wasnt just built of money and ideas; it was much more than that. The Chartres Cathedral was built from such things as lies, deceitfulness, treachery, and dishonesty. But, this is what made it possible to be resurrected; even though many of the above ideas are negative many of them had the intentions of completing the grand cathedral. All of the off-putting events are what made the cathedral what it is, and with the construction lasting as long as it did that made it even more magnificent in its actual completion. But, what I find most shocking about this cathedral is the sheer detail and time spent on it and how marvelous it must have been to be a person of that time and stand in its immense ore. This is what I find most impressive of the cathedral because we cannot relate to feeling of accomplishment they most of had. As stated before, the negative ideas and all of the turmoil the cathedral went through is what sets the Chartres Cathedral away from most others. What is amazing is that in most constructions a single fire is enough to set back the building of buildings but not in the case of the Chartres Cathedral. The cathedral also had to go through many different problems because it was built in a time of civil issues, such as Bishop Fulbert against the Kings and Queens. But,

this didnt stop the people of Chartres; they were a very determined group of people and what I came to realize a very proud group also. The construction crews of the cathedral were a new breed of workers. They each seemed to specialize one thing and in doing this they became very competitive, and as we know now days that is the key to making something better. One of the best known groups that came out of this was known as the Master Masons. This marked the time of a new future to come for the reason that they revolutionized the architecture of cathedrals. They not only built taller and bigger but much stronger with the help of inventing such things as the flying buttress, and the colossal size of the stain glass windows. The windows are like any of the time and unlike any of even our time with its own blue called Chartres blue which we still cannot replicate. Combining all of this the Master Masons realized that they were much more than just simple cathedral builders but more of an innovatory group and affect the world in a much more profound way. That is the difference between buildings of now and then. I think that the builders of today and the builders of then are very different, in the sense that they had pride in what they made. Architects of now are in it for the money and for the name compared to old time were it was for pride and for the people. Such pride as the people of Chartres just does not exist today as it did then. The people of Chartres built a cathedral that had to stand the test of skepticism and the test of time. Not only did they do that they made a cathedral that we are talking about 1000 years later and that is a marvel in its own. Overall, pride and determination is what made the cathedral what is it today. We may never be able to grasp the size and problematic situations that they had to overcome but we

can only learn from what they had to deal with. Maybe someday the people of earth will have something to unite about and build somethings like the people of Chartres and Europe did in the epic period of time.
