Chapter 3

Results

This chapter deals with the presentation, analysis

and interpretation of the data gathered in connection with

the specific problems and hypothesis of this research study.

As previously stated, this investigation aimed to

determine the literary interpretation skills of the BSED

Social Science and Mathematics majors of the College of

Education at WVSU. Data were presented, analyzed and

interpreted in the light of this objective.

This chapter presents the descriptive data

analysis, and the inferential data analysis. Descriptive

data analysis was employed to determine the level of

literary interpretation skills of the respondents when

classified as a whole and when classified as to their

major. The inferential data analysis provides for the t-

test computations on the differences in the literary

interpretation skills when respondents were classified to

major.

Descriptive data analysis was used to show the

level of literary interpretation skills of BSED Social

Science and Mathematics majors of the College of Education

at WVSU when classified as a whole and according to their

major. This analysis explains the measures of variation of

the students’ performance in literary interpretation.

The first specific problem of this investigation

was to determine the level of literary interpretation

skills of BSED Social Science and Mathematics majors of the

College of Education at WVSU when classified as a whole.

Table 2 shows the level of literary interpretation

skills of BSED Social Science and Mathematics majors of the

College of Education at WVSU when classified as a whole.

Based on the results, Table 2 shows that the level

of literary interpretation skills when taken as a whole

were very satisfactory (M=31.28, SD=6.534). The students’

scores were slightly scattered around the mean, (SD=6.534).

As revealed in Table 3, the level of literary

interpretation skills of the BSED Social Science major was

very satisfactory (M=31.68, SD=4.750) while that of the

BSED Mathematics majors was also very satisfactory

(M=31.08, SD=7.296). As shown by their computed standard

deviations, the scores of BSED Social Science and

Mathematics majors were slightly scattered around the mean.

BSED Social Science and Mathematics students of the College

of Education at WVSU relatively have very satisfactory

skills in interpreting literary pieces. Inferential data

analysis was used to determine the differences in the level

of literary interpretation skills of BSED Social Science

and Mathematics majors of the College of Education at WVSU

when classified according to their majors.

Table 4 shows the difference in the level of

literary interpretation skills of BSED Social Science and

Mathematics majors of the College of Education at WVSU when

classified according to their majors.

BSED Social Science students obtained a mean score

of 31.68, while BSED Mathematics students achieved a mean

score of 31.28. The p-value of 0.743 was lower than the set

.05 level of significance (1.980) for two-tailed test. It

means that there was no significant difference in the level

of literary interpretation skills of BSED Social Science

and Mathematics majors of the College of Education at WVSU

when classified according to major. In other words, the

literary interpretation skills of the BSED Social Science

and Mathematics majors of the College of Education at WVSU

were quite similar.
