Students develop analytical skills to surrounding industry analysis, strategy formulation, organizational design, and competitive dynamics. Approach A mix of lectures and case analyses are used to introduce the student to a wide array of conceptual frameworks. The class emphasizes developing the students ability to: (1) analyze a business situation from a multi-level, multi-disciplinary perspective, (2) identify and evaluate a set of alternatives that vary in their ability to improve the fit between a companys strategy and its competitive environment, (3) consider how to implement an alternative or modify a course of action. Readings Required Textbook: Pankaj Ghemawat, Strategy and the Business Landscape, 3rd edition. Prentice-Hall Articles/readings through Blackboard course site. 3 cases available through Harvard Business School Press: Office hours: 1:15 until 2:15 MW Or by appointment

General business literacy through reading the Wall Street Journal, Business Week, Fortune, Forbes, etc. Grading Student grades shall be based upon individual assignments. The semester grade, the weighted summation of the grades earned in each of the assignments shall include the full range of grades with the range for plus and minus determined as follows: A+ A AB+ B BGreater than or equal to 97 94 to 96.99 90 to 93.99 87 to 89.99 84 to 86.99 80 to 83.99, etc.

Attendance/Participation Attendance in every class is expected. Students will sign an attendance sheet at the beginning of each class. Class begins promptly at 9 a.m. Depending upon the daily class structure, whether organized into three parts or two parts, either two brief breaks or one longer break, respectively, will be taken during each class. Given the intensive nature of the course, students are required to make arrangements to make up any missed work. Quizzes and position paper deadlines may NOT be deferred. 2

5/17/2011 Cold calling will be used. At any time, a student may be called upon to provide an overview to the key concepts present in an assigned reading or case, to comment on an idea presented by a fellow student, or to synthesize the days discussion. Written Assignment Details All written assignments that will be graded must be submitted electronically. It is the students responsibility to make sure that the faculty member can open the file. The file should be named with the students first and last name followed by the assignment name. The professor shall use the Review function within Microsoft Word on a Microsoft operating system to provide feedback on students assignments.

Assignments Final Project Each student shall complete a strategic recommendation to a company of his/her choice. The company should be one that competes in a single industry to make the assignment doable in a 4 week period. This recommendation shall be informed by an analysis of the industry within which the company competes and an analysis of the company and its competitors. Assignments are staggered throughout the four weeks to feed into the completion of this final project. The final project shall require an in class presentation on Friday, June 15, 2012 as well as a written submission, not to exceed 15 pages. Details about the final project will be provided in class. Readings from the textbook, in class exercises and case studies shall be used to help students develop their final projects. In addition, quizzes and position papers will be used to assess students command of the courses content. Quizzes There shall be a total of four quizzes in the class as outlined above. The quizzes shall use a combination of multiple choice and short answer items. Position Papers There shall be a total of four position papers as outline above. Further details about the font size, margins, page limits, purpose of each and suggested structure follow below. For each assigned position paper, each student is responsible for submitting to the instructor via email prior to the start of the class meeting an original, individually-prepared position paper. All position papers are not to exceed three (3) pages in length with double spacing, minimum of 11 point font and one inch margins all around. 3

5/17/2011 The first position paper, not to exceed three (3) pages in length, is designed to teach students how to summarize a significant amount of information about an industry using the concepts of opportunities and threats. Two pages are to be allocated to prose that offers a clear, succinct statement regarding the profit potential of the industry going forward and identifies what a competitor in the industry must do to be successful going forward, while referring to a summary table that comprises the third page. This position paper will eventually comprise an appendix in the students final projects as it will be based on the industry where their company of choice competes. The second position paper, not to exceed three (3) pages in length, is designed to teach students how to summarize a significant amount of information about a company and its competitors using the concepts of strengths and weaknesses. Two pages are to be allocated to prose that offers a clear, succinct statement regarding the competitive potential of the focal company going forward and identifies what the company must do to position itself relative to its competitors, while referring to a set of tables, figures and/or charts that appear on the third page. This position paper will eventually comprise an appendix in the students final projects as it will be based on the company of choice and its competitors. The third position paper, not to exceed three (3) pages in length, is designed to offer students an opportunity to make a recommendation to a company about how it should handle a situation that involves growth in a single industry. Students have the latitude to use the three pages in any manner they see fit. An in class discussion of how to go from analysis to a position paper on a case will precede the timing of this assignment. The fourth, and final position paper, not to exceed three (3) pages in length, is designed to offer students an opportunity to make a recommendation to a company about how it should position itself in the face of globalization. Students have the latitude to use the three pages as they see fit. Academic Honesty The principal objective of the policy on academic honesty is to promote an intellectual climate and support the academic integrity of the University of Vermont. Academic dishonesty or an offense against academic honesty includes acts that may subvert or compromise the integrity of the educational process. Such acts are serious offenses that insult the integrity of the entire academic community. Offenses against academic honesty are any acts that would have the effect of unfairly promoting or enhancing one's academic standing within the entire community of learners which includes, but is not limited to, the faculty and students of the University of Vermont. Academic dishonesty includes knowingly permitting or assisting any person in the committing of an act of academic dishonesty. The policy distinguishes between minor and major offenses. Offenses purely technical in nature or in which the instructor does not perceive intent to achieve advantage are deemed minor and handled by the instructor. Major offenses are those in which intent to achieve academic advantages is perceived. A full statement of the policy can be found in the Cat's Tale. 5/17/2011 Faculty and students will at all times conduct themselves in a manner that serves to maintain, promote, and enhance the high quality academic environment befitting the University of Vermont. To this end, it is expected that all members of the learning community will adhere to the following guidelines: 1.
