I B.Tech.(CCC) Supplimentary Examinations, June 2008 SURVEYING (Civil Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 100 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks

1. (a) What are the dierent methods of adjusting a traverse in Gales system? Explain one of the rules in detail. (b) The bearing of two inaccessible stations A and B taken from station C were 2250 001 and 1530 261 respectively. The coordinates of A and B were as under Station Easting Northing A 300 200 B 400 150 Calculate the independent coordinates of C. [10+10] 2. In trigonometrically measurement of the dierence in level of two stations P and Q, 61760 m apart, the following data were obtained: Instrument at P, angle of elevation of Q = 0 32 Instrument at Q, angle of depression of P = 3 33 Height of instrument at P = 1.44 m Height of instrument at Q = 1.50 m Height of signal at P = 13.84 m Height of signal at Q = 13.80 m Find the dierence in level between P and Q, and the curvature and refraction Corrections. Take R sin 1 = 30.88 m. [20] 3. (a) Write short notes on the subtense bar and the anallatic lens. (b) A sta is held at distances of 30.395 m and 91.936 m from the axis of a theodolite provided with xed stadia hairs, the sta intercepts for horizontal sights being 0.305 and 0.915 respectively. Determine the constant of the instrument. Find the horizontal distance of the sta from the instrument when the intercept is 1.525 m if in this case the line of sight inclined at 100 to the horizontal. [10+10] 4. (a) What are the dierent linear methods for the setting out simple circular curves. Explain the method of osets from the long chord. (b) A compound curve consists of an arc of 33 chains radius followed by the other of 42 chains radius and connects two straights with a total deection angle of 840 . The chainage of intersection is 77.50 chains and the starting point of the curve is chosen at 44.50 chains. Determine the chainages of the junction of the two arcs and also that of the end of the curve. [10+10] 5. Two straights of a proposed road deect through an angle of 1200 . Originally, they were to be connected by a curve of 520 metres radius. However, due to the revision 1 of 2

of the scheme, the deection angle is to be increased to 1320 . Calculate the suitable radius of the curve such that the original starting point of the curve (P.C.) does not change. [20] 6. (a) Discuss the principle of Triangulation. Also explain the purpose of Triangulation surveys. (b) Two triangulation stations A and B are 45 km apart. Their elevations are 244.45m and 275.00m respectively. The interveining ground may be assumed to have a mean elevation of 222m. Find the minimum height of the signal required to be erected at B so that the line of sight may not graze the ground less than 3m. [10+10] 7. (a) List out the most common uses of Hydrographic surveys. (b) Explain the dierent preliminary steps required to be carried out before locating the details in hydrographic surveys. [8+12] 8. (a) Describe scale of vertical photograph over at terrain and over variable terrain. (b) To determine the average scale of an aerial photograph, three points A,B and C were selected. Their elevations were determined from a contour map as 1400 m, 900 m and 1100 m. If the ying height of the air craft above MSL is 3500 m and the focal length of the camera lens is 160 mm, calculate the average scale of the aerial photograph. [10+10]
