You can’t do without winter tyres.

They increase the safety of a vehicle when riding on snow to such extent, that any discussion is of no use. Current representatives of brands have met at a big comparative tyre test for 205/55 R 16 sizes.
ithout good tyres you simply cannot do. Even if Michael Schumacher would drive the car. In motor sport, tyres may decide on a victory or defeat. What does it mean for an ordinary driver who usually does not drive in extreme conditions? Does it play any role to have tyres mounted by a producer X or Y? Yes it does, especially regarding winter tyres. Upcoming season is typical for humidity and streets covered with snow. Then the phrase ”extreme conditions” gains different meaning and also an ordinary driver driving his small vehicle may without his own effort get on the borders of adhesion or even beyond, for example on snowy uphill road. Suddenly, the vehicle stops and wheels start to spin helplessly. The blame is on tyres, without regard to driver’s ride. Those, who believed it is possible to drive on summer tyres also during winter, are wrong. Summer tyres are so helpless on winter surface that consequences of their use are much more expensive than purchase costs of winter tyres. The variety of winter tyres is huge. It comprises of products from renowned global tyre producers to products of small, less known producers trying to fill the gap in the market. These

producers offer tyres for prices lower by 40% than premium tyres from well-known global producers. One of the traditional price-breakers is our domestic producer, the Matador Company from Púchov. Recently, another competitor tries to enter the market with low prices – Italian company Marangoni with the seat in Verona. Other producers are well known under traditional names for several decades. There is no individual producer among them, and on the market these tyre giants offer cheaper products under their second or third brand. For example Kléber from France belongs under the Michelin concern; Fulda brand belongs to Goodyear. For that matter, the same can be said about the Dunlop Company. However, Dunlop in comparison to Fulda does not focus on a customer requiring low price, but belongs to middle price range. According to information that our colleagues from German AutoMotor und Sport obtained from Federal Association for business and production of tyres it is clear that average prices of Dunlop tyres are lower than those of Goodyear, but surely higher than Fulda.

Developers of both brands possess complete independence. Dunlop obtained the best figures. for many years in tyre tests of our affiliated editors Dunlop underlines its position within the elite in winter tyres. After all. and this is good. completely in opposition to Fulda. traction of which was up to 300 N lower than the one of Dunlop. Goodyear extended Eagle Ultra Grip family to seven members and arouse expectations because within the segment of winter tyres already their predecessor was a proof of competence of the producer. Also second tyre of a cheap class – Marangoni – obtained surprisingly very good results on snow. The third place belongs to the Matador tyre after beating the last-year newcomer Pirelli Sotto Zero. Both brands entered this-year tyre test with new constructions. Winter riding tests held on the north of Sweden because of permanent snow and temperature conditions. but only a little better than Goodyear. Firstly. because also an internal competition is a good way to increase quality level. Dunlop products do not have any specific pattern or mark on sidewall as the Goodyear tyres have. quickly proved that both newcomers from Goodyear and Dunlop are the best a man can buy for snowy surfaces. tests for traction on snow were carried out. We can say the same about Dunlop that offered newly developed tyre with additional label D3 for upcoming season of snow and ice. .

and ended on the excellent forth place with minimum two-point loss behind the world leading triple of Goodyear. Dunlop achieved middle position and Fulda the worst results. . According to statistics. They calculate they can handle the vehicle on the road during those few days of snow. Also Bridgestone LM-25. economic reasons or overrating of personal driving skills. Of course. Dunlop and Goodyear continue in their triumphal way and in this discipline Dunlop pushed Goodyear to second place as Dunlop tyres demonstrated to be more precise and underwent the tested track faster. Pirelli. Understeering is responsible for turning a wheel out of the bend and thus in extreme situations it can make the car difficult to control. Goodyear reached dream level of 99 points. It is because there are still many contemporary drivers that either because of ignorance. These tyres perfectly fit to a vehicle with front drive as the testing vehicle Audi A3 Sportback was.8s). a tyre from Dutch Vredestein Company went through similar tests. At stopping from 50km per hour to zero. stopping distance from 50km per hour to zero is 63.8m). In this test Goodyear proved to be the best in braking on slippery surface. but may cause an unnecessary traffic jam. because such vehicles have little tendency to understeer. that means almost three times more than in case of winter tyre (Snowtrac: 24. Goodyear required stopping distance of 0.4m long. In this test. Already at maximum traction of 648 N (Vredestein Snowtrac: 2889 N) the tested vehicle got stacked when rising.Apart from competition in winter tyres. Goodyear and Dunlop not only obtained the best time results but also showed excellent riding qualities. continued in further development but still demonstrates considerable weaknesses in braking on snow. Test results show to all intents and purposes that this attitude is carefree and foolish. In tests on wet surfaces. after not very convincing test results from the last year tests. Matador reached 89 points in test on snow. Much more was clarified during tests of handling in turns. Brakes .5m shorter than its closest competitors Continental. The car stopped several times even when driven by an experienced driver. Everything is visible on snow. Dunlop and Pirelli. deny the use of winter tyres. Kléber and also Marangoni. And to pass a distance determined for test of handling. this need not be dangerous.second test on snow. the use of summer tyres in winter equals to Russian roulette. Thanks to this the ride is easy. whereas the vehicle with winter tyres did not even recognize the rising. the testing vehicle Audi needed 162 seconds (Snowtrac: 81. Further. Dunlop gained 96 out of the total possible 100 points.
