Trinity Adult Discipleship
Autumn 2012
A class I’d like to highlight is called Life from the Scriptures : How Do We Read the Bible? It begins on August 19 (through September 9) [Sundays at 9:45am. Mission: Lounge; Shawnee: Worship center] We know that reading the Bible is supposed to be a goal of ours, yet we often feel a barrier between ourselves and the life God is calling us into through his Son. How do we read the Bible on our own and with others? How can we practice a reading of the text that creates a vulnerability within the depths of our souls, a vulnerability that God uses to shape us for life? 'Words spoken and listened to, written and read are intended to do something in us, to give us health and wholeness, vitality and holiness, wisdom and hope. We open [the Bible] and find that on page after page it takes us off guard, surprises us, and draws us into its reality, pulls us into participation with God on his terms." (Eugene Peterson, "Reading the Scriptures")

Let's gather and explore this question together. Together, we'll explore tools and rhythms to help us get into the text, reading the Bible as Luther suggested via "lectio divina," how to see the Scriptures in their historical and literary context, and how we might read the Scriptures together as a community of faith (both locally with our Trinity family, but also with the communion of saints who have gone long before us).
