Summer 2012

Funformation

MAY-SEPTEMBER

The Champaign Park District is a special district of local government with its own financial and legal responsibilities. It is governed by five elected residents of Champaign who give their services to the community. The Park Board holds its regular meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at 7pm at the Bresnan Meeting Center, 706 Kenwood Road. Residents are invited to attend and are welcome to make suggestions or comments to improve the programs or facilities offered. The Champaign Park District’s 63 parks total over 670 acres. Thirteen facilities are available for a wide variety of recreational opportunities.

Our Mission
The mission of the Champaign Park District is to provide quality parks and recreation for all ages in our community.

As we continue to celebrate 100 years of parks in Champaign, we are proud to bring you another award winning season with new meaning to our Decade of Excellence –Strategic Plan 2005-2015. What the District began 6 years ago with facility replacement will continue as your Park District builds a new Leonhard Community Center Centennial Park funded in part with a $2.5 million Park and Recreation Construction Facility Grant. The Virginia Theatre, a recipient of a new Public Museum Grant and a lot of local and legislative support will enter its final stages of renovation including the renovation of the auditorium, upstairs restrooms, the addition of an elevator for accessibility and stage improvements beginning in May. The price tag is huge to restore this historic landmark and donations are continually welcome through our 501c (3) Champaign Parks Foundation. A new park called Sunset Ridge Park complete with tennis, basketball, paths and playground and a new playground at Garden Hills Park are now open for your enjoyment. And when the Sholem Aquatic Center was first built six years ago, the District planned for future improvements by having plumbing in place to add a second slide and water walk. A brand new, first of its kind translucent slide has been added at Sholem and the water walk is under construction for an exciting new summer season. At the same time, the 40 plus year old Spalding Pool will not reopen as it has outlived its usefulness and repair costs are more than new construction. An interlocal agreement with Unit #4 School District will allow us to hold seasonal swim lessons and day camp programs at Centennial High School Pool while we plan for future aquatic needs. On the following pages you will find exciting new opportunities for fitness, camps, sports and cultural opportunities that we hope you will enjoy.

centennial high School Pool
913 crescent dr. Centennial High School’s indoor pool will temporarily host many of the programs formerly held at Spalding Pool. Centennial Pool is an indoor facility with 6 lap lanes, diving boards, and water depths ranging from 3’6” to 12’. Centennial will host lap swim, water aerobics, swim lessons, and water polo. It will not have any open public swim hours aside from those dedicated to lap swim or water exercise. The design of Centennial Pool’s lockerrooms and restrooms will present accessibility issues for patrons who have difficulty with stairs. As a result, patrons with mobility concerns are encouraged to sign up for morning swim lessons at Sholem Aquatic Center. If you are unsure as to whether or not Centennial is a good fit for you, please call Megan Kuhlenschmidt at 217-398-2571 or email megan.k@cparkdistrict.com.

Stop the leaks!

In order to maintain a clean environment for all swimmers, if your child is still in diapers, then approved swim diapers muSt be worn at all times if your child will be entering the water. “Leaks” and accidents result in having to close the facility for sanitation and loss of swim time for everyone. Approved diapers are available for purchase at the Sholem Aquatic Center ticket office.

youth Sports goals & objectives
The philosophy behind the youth sports program is to provide an atmosphere that focuses on fun, opportunity, sportsmanship and instruction. Sports can play a positive role in our children’s development, fostering physical skills and emotional maturity. Our children should have a place where they can have fun participating in organized activities in a healthy, safe environment. We strive to provide quality instruction in the fundamentals of the sport while emphasizing fun and sportsmanship over winning. By creating a positive experience for the children we hope to encourage a lifetime of involvement. You can help. We need the cooperation and assistance of parents and coaches to promote and demonstrate these values.

• Select programs such as champaign united Fast Pitch are by invitation only. Last year was the inaugural season for the Park District Champaign United Fast Pitch team. Based upon input from coaches the Park District chose twelve 15&U players from within our leagues. Those players continued to play for their respective Park District teams. They also trained separately as a select squad. The team was coached by Jenna Harshbarger (pitcher, St. Ambrose University) and Tess Strang (starting second base, Milliken University). At the end of the season they played in a tournament in Decatur. The idea behind select squads is to provide a more competitive environment with higher level coaching for advanced players. This year we will be developing both a 15&U and 12&U squad. All select programs are by tryout or invitation only. ages 8-18
LAX is action-packed, exciting and addictive and here’s your chance to take your shot with one of the hottest growing sports in the country. The Champaign Park District is partnering with the Champaign County Lacrosse Club to provide kids the chance to learn this game. This is a non-contact camp. En garde! Looking for something more than just the same old sports camp? Add some excitement to your summer vacation with the Cavalier Fencing Camps. We have a variety of camp experiences for the beginner to the experienced fencer. Fencers should come dressed to work hard in loose clothing (no denim jeans) and tennis shoes. All fencing equipment is provided. All camps are taught by Liz Mayerich. Liz began fencing at Texas A&M University in 2002. Those who have participated in another fencing camp or in one of the Point’s Cavalier classes are welcome to attend. We’ll play all the great games you’ve enjoyed all along, plus introduce saber and epee fencing. On the last day of camp we’ll hold a tournament so you can show off your skills. giRlS oNly FeNciNg camP Girls with or without fencing experience are welcome to attend our first Girls Only Fencing Camp. An Opportunity To Leave a Legacy

Board of directors
W. Penn Nelson, Chair Dan M. McCulley, Vice Chair John A. Frauenhoffer, Secretary Newton H. Dodds Craig W. Hays Bobbie H. Herakovich Barbara S. Hundley Louis D. Liay Dennis R. McMillan Scott A. Miller Arthur J. Thoma Robert F. Toalson (Honorary) Gary G. Wackerlin, Treasurer Champaign Parks Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit providing philanthropic support for the Champaign Park District.

During their February Regular Board meeting, the Champaign Park District Board of Commissioners approved completing the Virginia Theatre restoration as one large project, closing down in mid May of 2012 and reopening in April of 2013 only long enough to accommodate the annual Roger Ebert Film Festival. This will become the largest project yet on the theatre since the Park District took over ownership in 2000 and will finally complete the restoration of this grand facility.

Total costs for the renovation are estimated to be $5 million so your help is needed now more than ever. Funds have been allocated, but every dollar collected in donations means one less dollar of tax support needed. Help us finish the job and bring the Virginia Theatre back to the grandeur of her glory days! For more information about the specifics of the restoration or how you can help, contact Laura Auteberry at laura.auteberry@ cparkdistrict.com or (217) 819-3839.

Bark District membership carries with it responsibilities to all Bark District users and the public at large. Not all dogs are good candidates for Bark District play and interaction with a wide cross section of dogs. In addition, Bark District users must be able to maintain control over their dogs even when off leash. All dogs at the Bark District should be responsive to their owners’ calls. Purchase a one-year membership for your dog at the Bresnan Meeting Center, Springer Cultural Center, or Tennis Center. Users found without proper membership tags will be asked to leave and may forfeit future park privileges. the dance arts School

The Dance Arts School teaches classes in Creative Movement, Irish Dance and Ballet. The ballet school is certified by the Royal Academy of Dance based in London, England, and is the only certified ballet training school in the state of Illinois. We train our students using the internationally acclaimed Royal Academy of Dance syllabus, a worldwide ballet training program focused on teaching classical ballet techniques in a manner that is safe for our dancers’ growing bodies. In 2003, Dance Arts added Irish Dance to its curriculum. Students are taught a warm up, proper Irish Dance technique, and a cool down that is safe for each age and ability level.

our Faculty
The ballet faculty members have each received professional training and collectively represent a wide spectrum of performance and educational backgrounds. Our Irish Dance instructors are championship-level dancers from the Sullivan School of Irish Dance, Mayer School of Irish Dance, and Trinity Academy of Irish Dance in Chicago. The ballet accompanists are professionally trained pianists with specialties in performance, theory, composition, and more. Flower islands

The Flower Island program is a cooperative beautification effort between local businesses and the Park District. This unique program allows businesses to have a personal flower bed near their site and to assist with the sponsorship of beds on public property (e.g. parks, schools, library, right-of-ways, etc.) Each year the local business pays a fee to the Park District. Half this amount contributes to the cost of their bed(s) and the remainder is used for the Flower Islands on public property. Hence, they enhance the beauty of the community twice. Services included for the annual fee are design, bed preparation, planting, maintenance, and fall removal. enrollment: September – November questions: Greg Sancken, 398-2591

The Adopt-A-Park program was developed by the Champaign Park District in 1982 after a class at Robeson Elementary School inquired about adopting the park near their school. The purpose of the program is to encourage people in a park neighborhood to assume some responsibilities for their adopted park. This helps maintain and program the park above the level that the Champaign Park District is able to achieve on its own. Adopted parks build community support and often become the focal point of neighborhood activities. The park programs benefit both the Park District and the adopting group. Weather cancellations

Programs may be cancelled due to inclement weather or unusable facilities. A Champaign Park District representative will remain on-site until the next scheduled event to inform participants of the cancellation.

This includes participation in programs which may or may not require an admission fee, spectating at athletic events, concerts, or attending special events. The following guidelines are designed to provide safe and enjoyable activities for all participants. Additional Codes of Conduct may apply for particular programs such as day camps, athletic leagues, and the Sholem Aquatic Center. Participants shall: 1. Show respect to all participants and program staff and/or supervisors. 2. Take direction from program staff/supervisors. 3. Refrain from using abusive or foul language. 4. Refrain from causing bodily harm to self, other participants or program staff/supervisors. 5. Refrain from damaging equipment, supplies, and facilities. Proof of Residency
• • • • Home address imprinted on check Driver’s license Voter registration card Other legal proof of residency

If you have not already done so, we encourage residents to get a new photo i.d. card, since proof of residency must accompany all registration. Please present one of the following:

Fees: Resident/Non-Resident (R/NR)

Residents living within the boundaries of the park district regularly support park facilities and programs through property taxes. People living within the Champaign and Urbana Park District boundaries pay the “resident (R)” fee. Persons residing outside these districts will pay 50% more than the resident rates – “non-resident (NR)”. Fees charged for programs are used to offset part of the costs for special instructors, facility costs, and program supplies.

Program Scholarships

Because some residents are unable to participate in recreation programs due to economic hardship, the Champaign Park District offers scholarships to reduce certain fees and charges. Scholarship applicants are not guaranteed fund availability, program registration, or choice of program location. Early applications are given priority. Scholarship application forms are available online or at the Bresnan Meeting Center and will be mailed to residents upon request. All requests will remain confidential. Need is the primary criterion upon which scholarship applicants are considered.

Fees: Non-Resident option

Program participants living outside the boundaries of the Champaign and Urbana Park Districts have an option of paying 50% more than the resident rates for each program registration or paying a yearly fee and the resident fee for each program. The yearly fee is computed on the assessed valuation of the nonresident’s home. The yearly fee is this valuation multiplied by the current tax rate of the Champaign Park District. The term of the payment coverage is from May 1 to April 30 of the following year. A person wishing to pay the yearly fee should bring a copy of the most recent tax bill to the Bresnan Meeting Center for computation of the fee. To receive the same privilege, non-resident renters may pay a flat fee of $50. The non-resident annual fee option is not available to persons residing adjacent to the Park District boundaries. They, however, have the option of annexing their property into the Champaign Park District.

child care Resource Service (ccRS)

dishonored checks deadlines

A $25 service charge will be assessed on all checks returned by the bank for any reason.

CCRS helps income-eligible parents who are working and/or going to school to pay for their child care. Based on parents’ family size and income, working families whose incomes are at or below 50% of the state median income level may be eligible to apply. Processing can take up to 10 business days. Please pick up an application from CCRS. CCRS approved families may register for summer camps by paying a $10 deposit per child/per session of camp. These deposits may be refunded at the end of the summer once all CCRS checks are received and there is a credit balance. If money is still owed on your account once CCRS checks have been applied, you will be responsible for the rest of the bill. Because the Park District does not receive payment from CCRS until one month after the service was provided, your deposit could be refunded as late as October. questions: Child Care Resource Service, 333-3252 or 1-800-325-5516

Program registration deadlines are established to give participants a date by which they should be registered. If enrollment is almost high enough to conduct a class, the registration deadline may be extended. If you missed the deadline, call 398-2550 to get information on possible deadline extensions.
