In Ya Box Entertainment Presents...

‘IN YA BOX’ AND REDEFINING NEW ORLEANS’ RADIO MARKET
...the multifaceted DJ Mike Swift is making a name for himself as an On-Air Personality/Mix Show DJ on the Crescent City’s newest Hip-Hop station; Power 102.9 KKND-FM, a Cumulus Broadcasting affiliate.
We know him as “Mr. Fist-Pumps”, The “New Orleans Club King”, and for his radio show’s trademark moniker “In Ya Box!”; yet, the mega star we know today as the infamous DJ Mike Swift had humble beginnings in his hometown of Algiers, La. Swift, known then as simply Michael Powell, was raised by a single mother and born into a family infused with heavy musical influence. Grandson of a local jazz magician and son of a multifaceted musician and singer, Swift was predestined to follow a career in music. He began playing the clarinet at the age of seven, but after hearing The Pharcyde’s “Labcabincalifornia” LP, Michael abandoned the clarinet to pursue his new found love of Hip-Hop. At the age of twelve, Swift saved up his allowance and brought his first DJ kit from an ad in the Source Magazine. He quickly developed a following DJing through a local circuit of private parties and high school dances. Upon his graduation from Edna Karr High School in 2002, Swift attended Dillard University where he became resident DJ. Swift’s buzz among the college crowd also landed him in the resident DJ position at Dillard’s rival school Xavier University. This cross-campus exposure gained him the recognition which allowed him to host parties at the city’s most popular venues and solidify himself as a record producer. In the winter of 2005, Swift landed a spot on the then local R&B station 102.9 KMEZ-FM and simultaneously served as Program Director and Consultant of Dillard University’s WDUB campus radio. Just two years later, in 2007, Swift was inducted into the infamous Definition DJ’s. Two months after Swift’s college graduation, in July 2008, 102.9 was revamped

For motivation, Swift reference this quote: “Success is not given...it is earned and taken”

into a Hip-Hop station dubbed Power 102.9 and Swift was chosen as the face of the newly restructured station. Soon after, due to his unique, versatile and distinctive voice, Swift was in high demand for voiceovers, mixtape hosting and event hosting. This exposure allowed this southern force to head towards national notoriety and landed him a coveted spot with the nationally recognized and acclaimed Core DJ’s. He has also expanded his record company Mike Swift Productions through a strategic alignment with Elevated Minds Music and Eupham Multimedia. The DJ Mike Swift and Eupham/Elevated Minds alliance allowed him to branch out into live performances and mixtapes. His “Power-Up”, “Original Sound Boy”, & “Middle Ground Music” collections garnered local acclaim and national buzz on the internet DJ Mike Swift has been a featured mix DJ and host on Sirius Satellite Radio Shade 45 and The Core DJ’s syndicated radio show. He has also worked with Heineken, Coca-Cola, and The United States Army for the Essence Music Festival, and many other corporate sponsors. Swift still serves as Power 102.9’s afternoon drive jock and mix show DJ inside the “Power Mix at 5” and can be heard from 2pm-7pm Monday through Friday and 2pm to 6pm on Saturdays and at www.power1029.com. Swift redefined New Orleans’ radio market and raised the bar for other up and coming DJs and proved success as a DJ isn’t just about spinning records. Yet, despite his overwhelming success and accomplishments DJ Mike Swift still remains humble. Swift credits his unwavering faith in God, strong family support system and loyal listeners following his success.
