The curtain rises on student theatre
“Theatre really does have the potential to be kick-ass, to be just as good as any other entertainment [students] want to go see—it’s just they don’t know it,” Markus Liik, founding partner of Richmond and Tower Productions, says when asked about the potential for students to become theatregoers. He explains many students think of theatre as something that is “not their thing.” He notes many had seen a show that simply did not appeal to them, or shows that were more narcissistic than entertaining. “There needs to be a focus on making it entertaining and making it relevant,” Liik says. He says when the company decides on a production, they look for shows with a great hook to attract students. For example, the company’s most recent show, Oleanna, featured a professorstudent relationship. “For the fall one that we do, the more well-known the play is, the more audience we can pull in,” Jo Devereux, an English professor at Western, explains. Devereux directs an annual show put on by the English department where students can get involved for credit. She says it was up to the students in the course to promote the show. She also explains several professors would include the play in their syllabi, which encouraged students to go see it. According to Liik, when Richmond and Tower chooses shows, they look at how to market them as well—including having a slick social media campaign. Their campaigns feature trailers and encourage their crews to feature the shows on their Facebook profiles. “What you really need to do is have a network on campus,” he explains, noting no other companies in London have that advantage. “We reach out to an audience who wouldn’t go see it.” Liik also says many people are eager to help out. “Lots of people just enjoy getting involved and being part of the process.” Devereux explains she never has problems attracting crewmembers or actors for the shows. “For auditions, we usually get lots,” she says, noting crew volunteers come from all over. Liik explains part of the reason Richmond and Tower was started was simply because they found local theatre wasn’t appealing to their network on campus. “What we find is, by and large, it takes the right show. But if you’re doing theatre through the university, you’re kind of constrained,” he explains. “We found we could do whatever the hell we wanted.”
Ivey hosts a festival of opportunities
With the first London Domestic Arrivals Film Festival being held this year, students return to the editing room to prepare for Western’s student film festivals— including the Ivey Film Festival. “This is the fourth year [it has been run]—this has been our flagship event every year,” says Matt Boswick, president of the entertainment business club at the Richard Ivey School of Business. “The goal of the club is to promote the entertainment industry and give [students] the opportunity to get involved in that industry, because there are not as many opportunities to get into the entertainment industry.” Boswick, who was head of marketing for the previous Ivey Film Festival, observes an increased involvement within the student body as well as with companies. The festival has expanded to include more judges to reflect the increasing participation and recognition. “It’s a little bit different than [the other film festivals in London] because it’s completely free for anyone to come,” Boswick says. “Because of the sponsorship from these companies, we are able to promote it for students who can come and see all these films for free. It gives students the opportunities to network with people from these companies who come to judge.” Among the judges is Darin Bristow, a producer for Corus Entertainment in Toronto. Bristow was impressed with the quality of the films screened at the festival and has been a judge at the festival since the first Ivey Film Festival four years ago. “[The festival has] grown in terms of entries—the quality was there since the very beginning. When I was asked to come be a judge [the first time], I was blown away with the quality of the films,” Bristow says. “Ivey Film Festivals are similarly fantastic opportunities for students to show off their filmmaking prowess and get some exposure,” says Josh Litman, a student filmmaker who submitted two films to the festival last year and won Best Comedy for his comedy film Death by Hot Wings. This year, Litman is submitting two of his own films, as well as participating in three others. “Taking into account the sheer number of films the Ivey Festival has to deal with, and the fact that it’s completely free to submit and attend, it’s a fantastic opportunity,” Litman concludes. The Ivey Film Festival will be screening films on March 21 in room 1R40 of the Ivey Building. Submissions to the festival are due Sunday, March 18 by midnight.

What’s in a font?
Believe it or not, fonts and typefaces have personalities. The right font for a resumé, a PowerPoint presentation or a simple document easily makes a device that can enhance the quality of your message. Fonts fall into different categories and classifications, each with a different personality that visually and semantically imposes itself on your document. The aesthetics of each font will deliver your message in a different style. Helvetica The sans serif, modern typeface that loves to travel speaks eloquently and has a reputation for easily persuading others. In the world of fonts, Helvetica is the equivalent to brevity and precision in rhetoric. Comic Sans The child that Microsoft gave birth to, but never raised to be the typeface it could have been—to this day, many question its style. It’s important to note Comic Sans’ widespread usage was unprecedented. Use of Comic Sans spread not only among comic books—which is what it was intended for—but it also spread amongst business offices. This led to a movement among designers to “ban Comic Sans.” Baskerville The stuffy old Englishman who surreptitiously judges everyone while considering himself to be correct at all times, which is usually true. It is best used for the body text of a novel and longer publications. It will give you the voice of a scholar. Bodoni/Didot The modern, serif typeface used in fashion magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. It walks into a room commanding attention in a subtle, classy way. Both Bodoni and Didot are suitable for headlines. Their characteristic serifs and hairline strokes will give your headline elegance. If you are feeling skeptical about using the fancy fonts, Bodoni or Didot are great alternatives.

A little idea can go a long way. This is true for Stephanie Buchy, owner and designer of A Paper Buffet, an online homemade card store. Buchy is a Western alumnus who graduated with a kinesiology degree in 2005. Seven years later, she is a successful small business owner and a proud member of the London arts community. “I had been making cards on and off before—I’ve always been kind of crafty,” Buchy says. In 2008, she made a card for her hair stylist who’d just opened a new studio. Her stylist was amazed by her artwork and convinced Buchy to make more and sell them—so she did. She started selling cards year-round in her friend’s salon. Around the same time, she discovered Etsy, a place for artists to sell their handmade merchandise online. Once Buchy created a profile on Etsy, her online business became profitable. Most of her cus-
tomers are American, but she’s also sold to Europe, Australia and Singapore. As for local sales, they mostly happen when Buchy showcases her work at community art shows. “It has certainly been a learning experience, and I never thought I’d own a business— clearly not in that respect,” she recalls. With the Internet, Buchy has found a way to make her business thrive without sacrificing her fulltime career. While she notes it’s not easy to be found on the web, she’s confident anyone can be successful with the right knowledge and skills. “If you can adapt to being on the Internet you really have to juggle a lot of hats because you have to present your items in a way that people want to buy them,” she explains. “People can’t feel them, can’t touch them, can’t see them or smell them, so you have to learn how to be a good photographer and communicate
in words in your description explaining why people should buy this item.” Buchy works hard to make sure her cards are unique, only making about two cards with the same design. “That’s why you want a handmade card—you don’t want one that’s mass-produced where there are 30,000 other cards,” she says. She notes when it comes to gifts and cards, people are looking for something different—and turning to local artists is a great way to find that. The success of her card business inspired Buchy to start a second—an online knitting store set to launch in the next couple of months. She says there’s nothing wrong with turning something you do for fun into a business. “It’s really about finding out what people want,” she encourages. “And if people want what you have to offer, you can make it happen.” apaperbuffet.blogspot.com

Across Canada, Vladimir Putin glared out from the front cover of the Globe and Mail two Saturdays ago. It wasn’t a photograph of the newly-elected Russian president, but rather an illustration—one that came from the hands of Western graduate Antony Hare. “They hadn’t had an illustrated cover in four years,” Hare smiles. “It’s pretty awesome.” And though gracing the front page of Canada’s largest national newspaper would be a highlight in anyone’s career, Hare has had work in many big-name newspapers and magazines during his span as an illustrator. His creations— most of them black and white portraits—have been featured in The New York Times, Esquire and The New Yorker.

But for someone with such a prolific portfolio, Hare wasn’t always set on becoming an illustrator. After graduating from Western in 1998 with a degree in philosophy and economics, he went on to study at OCAD University. Spending only a year there, he then decided to attend graduate school for philosophy in Nottingham, England. “I did a year there, but really, I just ended up drawing when I was there. I started to realize that creative-type professional stuff was where I was headed.” When the Internet bubble began to swell around the turn of the millennium, Hare adjusted his focus to illustrations. His first jobs were at web shops and ad agencies, but that work proved to be unstable. “In 2001, I was laid off from one of those digital agencies,” he recalls. “And it was fine, shops like that closed all the time. But it did teach me that that kind of loyalty was, like, 3-months based.” Since then, Hare has built up an impressive body of work, producing thousands of pieces a year from his London home. But being an illustrator in the age of Internet piracy comes with the same problems that artists of every medium face. Rather than go out of his way to
combat copyright infringement, the 35-year-old is trying to embrace the fact that people want to use his work for free. “I started to think, ‘OK, how can I really start to own that?’ And then I started to realize a lot of musicians, especially hip hop artists, release their mix tapes for free. There’s a real model there.” Hare recently released a torrent of his own, giving some of his work a licence to be used in whatever way the downloader chooses. “I think there’s something to be said for letting go at some, and not fighting every use [of my work for free],” he says. He plans on releasing packages of his work online periodically, and seeing where the experiment goes. But what else does an illustrator who gets his work on the front cover of the Globe and Mail strive for? For Hare, it’s sharing his experience with the world through teaching. “Think there’s an educational side to this,” he says. “I really think there’s a nice opportunity for underprivileged schools and underfunded computer labs to incorporate this kind of drawing style as part of their arts program. Student decor can be cheap and simple
Jordan Whelan is no stranger to the trials and tribulations of student housing—especially when it comes to moving. The McMaster University graduate changed living quarters every year while attending university, and even now recalls “the sweat and tears while [he] wrestled with an Allen key.” “My biggest struggle was in terms of transport,” he says. “Moving vans can become expensive, especially when dealing with escalating fuel costs.” Now, Whelan and a group of fellow Ontario university graduates are looking to make things better for future generations. Whelan is co-owner and director of marketing for Our Paper Life, a start-up company dedicated to producing cheap and reusable cardboard furniture. “The product is ideal because university students are nomadic by nature and cash strapped,” Whelan explains. “We have created a product that addresses all the pitfalls in temporary furnishing. It is a lower price point, it is lightweight and yet it still has great weight-bearing capability.” So far, Our Paper Life has only two models available for purchase—a desk and a bookshelf, both retailing for $22.99. While weighing less than five pounds each, they can hold 60 and 90 pounds, respectively. But Whelan assures that more products are in the works. “Geoff Christou is currently working out the kinks in designing a couch, which will be at least 50 per cent cheaper than our competitions, yet customizable in terms of being either a two-seater or a sectional,” Whelan notes. “Think of it as real-life Tetris in your student housing.” And if the price point isn’t attractive enough, the pieces are some of the most environmentally-friendly furnishings money can buy. Both the desk and the bookshelf are made from 90 per cent recycled materials and are 100 per cent recyclable, making it pretty easy to be green. The construction process is a bit bumpy for novices, and despite the company’s claim of a “five-minute assembly time,” we found it took anywhere from 20 minutes to half an hour for each piece of furniture. The main grievance we had was that pieces aren’t marked to correspond to the instructions. This can be overwhelming when you’re confronted with a lot of cardboard pieces that look the same, so having a few guiding stickers would have been nice. We were pleasantly surprised with how sturdy and waterproof the products were. They withstood our weight and water tests, living up to the claims on the box. And because the material is paper-like, it’s easy to customize—whether it’s with colourful graphics or a few scribbled math equations.

Boost your brain function Is your cellphone with omega-3 fatty acids making you a jerk?
Your parents might have told you to eat your veggies, but what they should’ve been worrying about was your omega-3 intake. A new study published in the Journal of Neurology suggests a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids may protect against premature brain cell decline as well as memory loss. There are other benefits associated with the fats, which are often associated with oily fish like salmon and tuna. “Regular omega-3 consumption has actually been correlated with improved mood as well as the reduction or delay of some of the various degenerative mental health conditions,” Jennifer Broxterman, registered dietitian and owner of NutritionRx in London, says. Broxterman adds that these conditions include those that can lead to Alzheimer’s or dementia. Broxterman also says plenty of foods contain the fats—including options for those who don’t eat meat. “There are lots of high-dose omega-3 plant sources,” she explains, citing certain vegetable oils, nuts—especially walnuts—and flaxseed. “Ground flaxseed is an amazing source of omega-3s.” Aside from helping to slow down brain decline and improving your memory, omega-3s have other health benefits. “They actually raise our good cholesterol number and help to bring down bad cholesterol,” Broxterman says. “So it really is something that’s going to help most people.” According to Broxterman, adult males should aim for 1.6 grams of omega-3s each day, and women should try for 1.1 grams daily.
It may sound odd, but a new study finds that it’s nothing to “LOL” about. At least not according to the Robert H. Smith School of Business behind the study called The Effect of Mobile Phone Use on Prosocial Behaviour. “Prosocial behaviour is any behaviour that has positive outcomes for society as a whole. An example might be volunteering to serve meals at a homeless shelter or helping to clean up a hiking trail,” explains Rosellina Ferraro, one of the marketing professors leading the study. A series of experiments were administered on test groups of cellphone users, all of who were less inclined to volunteer for community service activities when asked. Ferraro sees reason behind such results. “Cellphone usage satisfies one’s need to belong, and thereby reduces concern for others in that
moment,” she says. “We capture this reduced concern with measures of prosocial behaviour.” With the increasing number of cellphone owners, could we be creating an apathetic generation? “It is possible that continuous use of a cellphone may create a chronic condition of lessened concern for other people beyond one’s immediate connections,” says Ferraro, who also acknowledges that social networking devices other than the cellphone may also be contributing to artificial social satisfaction. “Any device that helps to fulfill needs to connect with others would reduce prosocial behavior,” she explains. “The degree to which any device or mechanism would do so depends on the nature of the connection that the device enables.”

With fit versus fat, fit is where it’s at
Ask a newbie exerciser what their goals are and it wouldn’t be surprising to hear a response about wanting to firm up or lose weight. Many people think exercising to lose weight or change how their body looks will make them healthier, and while it’s true that adding physical activity can benefit health in a multitude of ways, the link between body weight and health may not be straightforward. Peter Lemon, a professor of kinesiology at Western who specializes in exercise nutrition, explains the confusion. “You see a lean person and think that person must be healthy, but maybe not,” he says. “If they’re not physically active, they actually have higher risk for a number of health conditions than a person who is fat but fit.” A study published last month by the University of South Carolina assessing fitness, fatness and cardiovascular disease concluded that maintaining and improving fitness, not just preventing fat gain, is important in reducing the risk of developing cardiovascular disease risk factors in healthy individuals. This conclusion, Lemon says, has previous support. “There’s clear data that if you regularly participate in exercise, the risk for several health problems decreases substantially, even below the risk for someone who is lean but unfit,” he explains. This perspective is gaining support in both fitness and healthcare. Julie Rochefort, a registered dietitian and proponent of the movement, says people should consider their motivation for exercising. “Active living looks different from person to person, but the important thing sits with our intentions. Are we moving to lose weight? Are we moving to feel better about our body image?” she questions. “These intentions may seem harmless, but can bring forth feelings of shame and blame when weight loss or a sixpack doesn’t surface.” Being active, she says, should make you feel good.
“Being physically active should bring you joy and satisfaction. Active living includes a broad range of activities ranging in frequency and intensity,” she says. Lemon says people should shift their focus. “While being fit and lean is better than being fit and fat, people shouldn’t be overly concerned with the lean part of it,” he explains. “It’s enough trouble trying to get people fit.” While statistics often cite an obesity epidemic, they miss an important point. “Recent estimates suggest that only about 10 per cent of Canadians are physically active to the point of health benefits,” he says. “That means 90 per cent of us are
not active enough.” While people often use lack of time as a reason for not exercising, Lemon says they should rethink their priorities. “If you place priority on health, you’ll find the time to do the exercise that you need to do,” he says. Rochefort agrees that getting active should be easy. She says aerobics and weightlifting—if you love them—are good options, and walks, shoveling snow and climbing stairs all count as exercise too. With clear associations between fitness—but not necessarily fatness—and health, Lemon says the message is clear. “Everyone needs to be exercising on a regular basis.”

Hot yoga: don’t sweat it
I am not a fitness freak. I get to the gym a few times a month when I find the time, and between visits I’m known to indulge in a Spoke burger or two. I certainly don’t have much experience with yoga, so when I visited Moksha Yoga on Richmond Street to try hot yoga for the first time, I didn’t know what to expect. “Yoga should be easy, right?” I thought to myself. “It’s just stretching and breathing. Maybe the room will be a little hot. No big deal.” I’ve been to deserts in Nevada and Arizona. I’ve been stuck in traffic on the 401 in a car with no air conditioning in the middle of July—but I have never been as hot and sweaty as I was during my first yoga class. Hot yoga is generally practiced at around 40 degrees Celsius, with about 40 per cent humidity— entering the yoga studio, or “hot room,” was like walking into a sauna. Though the room was hot, at first I thought it was easy. The heat was relaxing, and the poses weren’t too difficult—but we kept holding them. “Aren’t you only supposed to hold stretches for 15 seconds?” I thought as I struggled to maintain my balance in the one-legged tree pose. Yoga isn’t only about stretching—it’s also about building strength and balance, which is achieved by holding unnatural poses at length. As the class continued, poses that began as stretches often became tests of my muscular endurance. Meanwhile, the room continued to get hotter. “This isn’t just stretching,” I realized as I struggled not to collapse. This is a full body workout—cardio included. About a quarter of the class was male. When I first got there, I noticed most of them had chosen not to wear shirts. I thought they were just showing off, but about halfway through the class I found out the hard way that wearing a cotton T-shirt to hot yoga is an exercise in futility. I felt like I had been pushed in a pool with my clothes on. The heat was stifling—by the end, the water in my bottle was actually hot—but when it was all over, I was struck by a sudden realization: I was relaxed. I didn’t even realize how tense I’d been, but afterwards I was acutely aware of how tense I wasn’t. Hot yoga isn’t for everybody. If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure or are otherwise medically afflicted, you should ask your doctor before trying hot yoga. Those with low tolerance for humidity have been known to faint. But in other ways, it is for everybody—my class was composed of people big and small, young and old. I felt better after an hour of hot yoga than I ever have after any workout. I may not be a fitness freak, but I can tell you where I’ll be next time I have an hour to exercise—and it won’t be at the gym.

If you can buy strawberries at Valumart in December, they must be okay, right? Wrong. “Most people are entirely unconscious about where their food came from, the conditions under which it was produced and the distances it has travelled,” explains Anthony Weis, a geography professor at Western. “We, in rich countries like Canada, have increasingly come to expect allseason availability of most fresh produce, even if it is coming from the other side of the world.” Fruits and vegetables are flown across the world on a daily basis to meet the needs of consumers. What people often don’t realize are the environmental and social impacts that accompany the products they are purchasing. “Food miles has a significant amount of popular traction [...] given the hundreds and often thousands of kilometres the average food item consumed in Canada has travelled from land to mouth. This in turn involves the consumption of fossil energy and greenhouse gas emissions,” Weis says. According to the food miles calculator on organiclinker.com, blueberries purchased at Metro grocery store in March are a product of Chile, which means they travelled approximately 8,782 kilometres, emitting 536 kilograms of carbon in the process. Weis says. Another big concern in the inseason debate is the population of farmers in Ontario, as farmers are facing low margins and pressures to “get big or get out.” “You want to make sure that you are supporting a local farmer that is sustainable. It is important
to note the growing method and talk to the farmer,” McCarthy says. “In an ideal world, we would all be shopping at farmers’ markets and talking to the farmer about how they grew their tomatoes.”
Simple snacks suited for slackers
If there’s one thing students have in common, it’s that they’re hungry and have no time. Some of us are poor, too. To help, here are some delicious meals that come together quickly, are easy on the wallet and taste awesome. Estimated price: $3 Directions: 1. Boil Kraft Dinner noodles on a stovetop as directed. 2. After draining the noodles, place them in a pot or bowl. 3. Add beans, margarine and cheese sauce, stirring until combined. While this meal is cheap, it’s extremely filling and should feed two people. Try kicking this meal up a notch with grated cheddar cheese, bacon and Italian sausage.

Ingredients: 1 tsp butter 1 bell pepper (any colour) 1 egg 2 slices of bread (optional) Estimated price: $2 Directions: 1. Prepare the pepper by trimming off the top and the bottom, cleaning out any seeds to leave a clean pepper ring. 2. Cut a cross section about an inch thick, making sure to keep the pepper intact. 3. Melt the butter in a frying pan. Add the pepper ring and when the pan is hot, crack the egg into the pepper. 4. Once the bottom has solidified, flip the whole ring over to cook the other side. 5. Remove your pepper egg and serve as is, or place on toast for a more substantial meal. You can get creative by adding cheese to the sandwich version of the meal. Black pepper, mayonnaise and Sriracha hot sauce are other tasty additions worth trying.
Almost a hash brown
Ingredients: 1 gold potato 1 egg 1 tsp salt 1 tsp olive oil Estimated Price: $1.75 Directions: 1. Use a cheese grater to shred the potato completely. 2. Squeeze the water out of the grated potato. 3. Drop the grated potato in a frying pan coated with olive oil. Crack the egg in and add the salt. 4. Cook until browned. Remove from pan and enjoy! As far as personal experience dictates, it is a complete crapshoot as far as the hash brown sticking together goes. Take this as you will. Try spicing it up with pepper or paprika, or use zucchini instead of potato for a healthier touch.

Although on the pricier side for greasy-spoon breakfasts, the portions are generous and the coffee is refilled throughout the meal. The marble rye toast, from London’s International Bakery, is exceptionally good. Toddle Inn has a homey atmosphere and is a great to alleviate a hangover. 640 Richmond St.

Handsome Dan talks about becoming a group and winning awards
As the winner of CHRW’s Album of the Year Award, you’d expect Daniel Mancini of Handsome Dan and his Gallimaufry to be a little more excited. It’s not because he’s unappreciative of the group’s recent achievement, he’s just so humble he barely knows how to respond to the success. “It just feels weird because I’m so used to The Best There Was—I listened to all the other bands and I think they’re so much better than us,” he laughs. “It does feel great though, and I’m really happy that people can listen to it and think it’s good.” The singer-songwriter has spent the last five years in London becoming acquainted with the music community—something he expresses has become stronger over time. When he first started Handsome Dan and his Gallimaufry, it really only was Handsome Dan. But his Gallimaufry did come in time, lending new inspiration to the sound he was originally striving for. “I was going to play a show on my own and decided to ask a bunch of people if they wanted to play,” he explains. “The people that showed the most interest also had willingness to keep going with it, so I kept them on.” But the other members didn’t only bring the sound to another level. Keyboardist Jake Szuminski’s house in Sackville, New Brunswick—a small town with a strong music scene—ended up being the location where they recorded their award winning album, The Best There Was. “We came up with the idea to go out in the spring of 2011, but I hadn’t written any songs yet,” Mancini says. “It took me about five or six months to write and then we spent two weeks arranging and two weeks recording there. It was a really quick process from beginning to end.” With the $500 prize from their CHRW win, Handsome Dan and his Gallimaufry will be recording a six song EP for Record Store Day on April 21. Mancini says they are songs he wrote before he was with the band that are played live on a regular basis, but have no recording. Despite their recent success, the band members are all at different places in their lives, making it difficult to continue this project. Without time to tour or push the boundaries, Mancini doubts that this project will become a career. “Music is just a hard thing for me—it’s emotionally draining,” he says. “It’s hard at this point to stay committed in that capacity, so it’s important, at this point, that we only go so far. I mean, we enjoy the reception of the London community and that’s where it stands at this point, and we’re okay with that.”
