This jurisdiction of A qu itan ia, a s a*1jurisdic** tion of our Order, w as created in the tim e of CBar l a— m agne and the first lodge of our O rder, eventually the G rand Lodge, held its opening convocation in the y e a r 804 or 805 A- D. The first G rand M aster w as Frees and he received his authority through one Arnfeud, a philosopher in Charlem agne’ s School of the P alace, who journeyed to Egypt to secure the authority. T h e Grand Lodge and its pow ers continued through many generations and centuries up to and including the well known Don Martinez de P asqu ally de la T o u r (the teacher and m aster of L. C. de Sain t-M artin ), who in I 754 revised the w ork of the O rder and greatly enlarged the Jurisdiction to include all of France. (F o r details of the history of the O rder in F ran ce see p ag es 21 and 22 of the March, I 9 I 6, issue of the A m erican R osae Crucis, also A rthur EL W aite’s “ Life of Louis Claude de Saint-M artin.) Count Bellcastle-Ligne and his pred ecessor a s Imp erator of the A. A. O. R. R. A. C. held docum ents and w arrants bearing continuous authority from the tim e of A rnaud and Frees, and under these p atents the present Imperator of the O rder in North A m erica w as empowered and authorized to p roceed with the or­ ganization of the O rder here, and w as initiated into the O rder under the authority of Bellcastle-Ligne and his associates in Toulouse, receiving the nam e “ Profundis” as Fratre, and also the M aster’s jew el (G old Rosey C ro ss), manuscripts, sym bolical keys, som e rare books, a cartouche-seal from Egypt, altar lam p, codes and a number of other secret articles. T h e powers, papers and authority thus conferred upon our present Im perator were the first to have been conferred upon any A m erican citizen by the A . A. O. R. R. A . C. and no sim ilar authority h as been conferred upon any one else for A m erica since then, despite the fact that ju st before, during and after the Im perator’ • visit to Toulouse, France, six other Amer-" ican citizens, some of them high in official circles ol A m erican fraternal movements, w ere in F ran ce and' even Toulouse for the sam e purpose. THE NAME “ AMORC”

This is an abbreviation of the nam e of the O rd er in North Am erica and som e other lands. H ere in the United States the first Suprem e Council of the O rder decided to use the nam e entirely in the English Lan guage because we were inform ed that the laws of some States did not perm it the incorporation of a body with a foreign name. H ence the first nam e adopted was Ancient and M ystical O rder of the R ose Cross, as appears on the first C harter issued by this first Council meeting. L ater we learned that the Su ­ preme Lodge could be incorporated with a Latin nam e so the name was partly changed to A N C IEN T AND M YSTICAL ORDER R O SA E C R U CIS. The full and complete name of the O rder in all Latin countries is AN TIQ U A E A RCA N A E ORDINIS R O SA E RU BEA E et A U R EA E CRUCIS (abbreviated to A . A . O. R. R. A . C .), which may be liberally translated into “ The A n ­ cient and A rcane (secret or m y stical) O rder of the Red Rose and Golden C ro ss.” We find this Latin form of the name is still used in India, Egypt, F ran ce, Spain, Japan , China, Russia and som e other countries, whereas in England and the North A m erican C onti­ nent the shorter English form is used, abbreviated into A. M. O. R. C., and in D enm ark and East India and some other places the Latin form is slightly changed to fit the native language. T h e nam e a s we use it here in Am erica is the authorized form of the true name of the Order or Brotherhood of the Rosicrucians which comes to us from antiquity. (In many foreign countries the Latin nam e of the O rder is hidden under the initials A. A. or A . A ., A . A . or som etim es A- A . A. based upon the repetition of the letter A in the Latin nam e.)

THE AUTHORITY FOR THE ORDER
The A. M. O. R. C. in North A m erica w as started as a branch sponsored by the Su prem e Executive or Hierophant of the A N TIQ U A E A R C A N A E ORDINIS R O SA E RUBEAE et A U R EA E C R U C IS of France. It remained such until after its organization h e re was. completed, when it was m ade an independent body

status, a s has always been the custom. M em bership fees and dues paid to the A . M. O. R. C. of N orth A m erica by any member are contributions solely to the support of the work in this country and not for any rights or privileges in any international or foreign body. (T he same principle holds in other secret and fraternal movements in the U. S. A .) ESTABLISH M EN T On February 8, 1915, the present Im perator of the O rder in North A m erica called together nine m en and women who were representatives of various schools of advanced thought in New Y ork and with the Moon in Sagittarius and other signs indicating the n atu re of the meeting, he presented to them his p ap ers, pow ers, rights and authority, and solicited their assistan ce in carryin g out the decrees of the M asters. C om m ittees were appointed to investigate all the claim s, p ow ers and authority the Im perator (then merely the official Legate of the O rder) possessed, and instructed to add to their committes other men and women in the city who were prepared to assist in the great work* The result of this meeting was that on the first day o f April, 1915, a meeting of thirty men and wom en selected from over 100 who volunteered their a ssist­ ance and moral support, met and elected a tem porary chairm an and finally organized them selves into the First Suprem e Council of the O rder in A m erica. T h is council, acting under a pronunziamento issued by the Legate of the Order, issued the First A m erican C h ar­ ter, elected the Suprem e Officers and created the first laws and steps of procedure for the establishm ent of the O rder in all States. This charter, sign ed and sealed, is one of our precious A m erican docum ents. Thereafter branch Lodges were established an d in the summer of 1917 a convention w as called of all the M asters, officers and delegates of all L o d ges o f the O rder in A m erica and at this first National Convention the proposed Constitution of the O rder in North A m erica was voted upon, section by section and finally adopted in its present form, and the Im perator w as officially declared the acknowledged Im perator in a c ­ cordance with the Constitution. A ll L o d ges o f ou r Order today operate under this Constitution. ORGANIZATION The Im perator of the O rder is the Chief or Suprem o Executive. The Suprem e Grand M aster, G eorge R. Cham bers, is President of the Suprem e C ouncil and M aster of the Suprem e Grand Lodge. T h e Su prem e Council is composed of the M asters of all the L o d ges of the North A m erican jurisdiction. T h e Su prem e Grand Lodge is com posed of all the M asters an d high degree members of the O rder in North A m erica living in the various cities of the North A m erican Ju risd ic­ tion. It is the Suprem e Spiritual body conducting the spiritual and metaphysical affairs of the order an d di­ recting all its esoteric work while it advises an d rec­ ommends the exoteric activities through the Su prem e Council. Grand Lodges are the governing L o d ge s in each State or division of the territory in the N orth Am erican jurisdiction. Subordinate L o d ges a re lo­ cated in small and large cities of the v ariou s S ta te * and in Mexico, C anada, A laska and the v ariou s terri­ tories and dependencies of the United S ta te s'o f A m er­ ica and also in the central Am erican countries. D is­ pensation Lodges, study groups and p rep a ra to ry cen­ ters located in many small cities throughout the North A m erican continent are under the direct supervision of the Suprem e Lodge, while the subordinate L o d g e * are under the jurisdiction of their respective G ran d Lodges. The A m orc College is incorporated a s a separate institution and is under the ju risd iction of the Suprem e Council. Other esoteric bodies- and movements carrying on separate branches of the w ork such a ** prison welfare, child welfare, C hurch w ork, public lectures, research work and a departm ent for the prom ulgation of the universal language, a re u n d e r the direction of the Suprem e Grand M aster or the De*5

failure of his work so that a possible opportunity to secure leadership and pow er in the O rder m ay bo seized. But the authority of one Im perator i« not transmitted to another in this m anner and our present Im perator's successor w as decreed som e time ago. “ GENUINENESS” O F T H E O RDER For the above reasons and for-m an y others, it is positively stated that the A . M. O . R. C. in N orth Am erica, under the direction of H. Spencer Lew is (P rofundis) as Im perator, is the only Roaicrucian movement, order, fellowahip, fraternity, Lodge, G roup or what-not, having the R osicrucian authority de­ scending from Egypt and India through the early founders of the O rder and the H ierophant and Imp erators of France, and retaining the ancient, ab so ­ lutely original and secret traditions and pow ers of Amenhotep IV (A khnaton, Ph aroah of E g y p t) the traditional founder of the order's m ysteries and m ono­ theistic teachings. A FFIL IA T IO N S The A . M. O. R. C. is affiliated--- and connected with, in fraternal relations with, acknow ledged by, and in exchange with--- all other foreign L o d ges or Jurisdictions of the Rosicrucians who hold and op erate under the same powers, p ap ers of authorities and p at­ ents as does the O rder here in A m erica. T h ese fo r­ eign branches of the A ncient O rd er include the Su ­ preme Shrine of the A . A . O. R. R. A. C. in C airo, Egypt, the Illuminati of the A . A . O. R. R. A . C« in Calcutta, India, and L a L o ge. Su prem e R ose C roix of France of the A . A . O. R. R. A . C. and-*bthers, from the Grand M asters and Suprem e O fficers of which our Im perator holds letters and p ap ers of fraternal rela­ tion sh ip, We are NO T affiliated with any other Rosi€Tucian society in this country or any other, nor with any fraternity, fellowship or m ovem ent using the word Rosicrucian. The Rosenkreutz O rder in G erm any was (and is) a branch of the A . A . O. R. R. A . C .) “ OUR T E A C H IN G S” Only the form or fundam entals of our rituals, the “ landm arks” of the O rder and the underlying laws and principles of all our teachings are like unto the rituals and teachings a s issued by the O rder in the days of old. In all countries and jurisdictions the teachings especially have evolved in keeping with the evolution of man and the p ro gre ss of the a rts and sciences. To believe that any practical knowledge applicable to our present needs and evolution could be derived from a study of the ancient Rosicrucian teach­ ings without change or m odification becom es a ridic­ ulous thought as soon as one read s the m any books still in existence containing extracts or whole sections of the writings of the ancient R osicrucians. F or this reason the lectures and teachings of our O rder have been constantly revised and am ended, and added to by advanced minds in the O rder so that the fundam ental principles adhered to will reveal the utmost of n atu re’s laws and operations. In this way, this sense, the teachings of the Rosicrucians alw ays were in advance of any other school of philosophy and science, and always will be. But little of our teachings, few of the phrases, are today a s the old M asters u sed; but the secret laws, the secret fundam entals and traditional principles are still preserved and unknown to other schools. M EM BERSHIP Membership in the A . M. O. R. C. of North A m erica does NOT include m em bership in any FO REIGN Lodge or branch of this O rder any more than woulcL it. embership in the French or Spanish Lodge of the O rder include m embership in the Indian or Egyptian Lodges. But membership in the A . M. O. R. C . of North A m erica does include m embership in the gen­ eral O rder of A. M. O. R. C. in all lands where it is established with the privilege of visiting and attending' sessions after members here have reached a certain

partm ent of Extension, the D epartm ent of W elfare, or the M inistraro of the Suprem e Council, or in the hands of competent individuals who are acting under the di­ rection of the Im peraton OUR RIGH T T O T H E NAM E AND SYM BO LS A fter a complete search and official publication of the intention, the United States Government has granted to our Im perator through the Patent Office letters patent giving to him personally the sole right to use the name and term A N CIEN T AND M Y STICA L ORDER R O SA E CRU CIS, the several triangle sym bols as used to designate the O rder, the symbol of the Rose Cross, the Cartouch sym bols, and other sym bols united to designate the official nam e or label of our O rder’s teachings, lectures, diagram s, rituals, m agazines, books, photographs, etc., in either printed or type­ written form. This is the first patent protection that has been given by our Government on such sym bols

or this name and it will prevent the use of these sym ­ bols or nam es or even a sim ulation of them by any other person or movement other than ou r Im perator or our O rder. O TH ER M O VEM ENTS There are known to be seven different R osicrucian movenlents—-called societies, fellowships, fratern ities and colleges in the United S tates today. A ll are doing good w ork in the spread of uplift, helpful principles, but not one of them are patented or chartered by or affiliated with the A . M. O. R. C . or A . A . O. R . R . A. C., nor do they use the nam e which we u se ; and nothing said on this p age should be taken a s discredit­ able to them. We wish m erely to define, clearly and withbut evasion, our position and our connection in regard to all other movem ents in this country and elsewhere.

For some months seekers who contem plate uniting with us and who m ake inquiries at different points regarding the several “ R osicm cian ” movem ents in A m erica, have been falsely informed in regard to one incident in the history of our A M O RC which should be truthfully presented to those who have demanded an explanation for at least two years. A gain our silence in regard to such m atters has been m istaken. We must speak now, especially because of a very re­ cent letter. This letter, sent to one who sincerely and honestly inquired of the Societas Rosicruciana in A m erica (S . R. I. A .) about their organization and ours, contains this m isleading and insinuating “ light’*: “ In reply to your inquiry we can state m ost p osi­ tively that Mr. Harvey Spencer Lewis is not nor has he ever been directly or indirectly associated with this Brotherhood. We have his application for m em ber­ ship in our M etropolitan College, New Y ork City, and same w as rejected by that body Jun e 5, 1915. We are well advised of his activities in organizing the socalled “ Ancient and M ystical O rder Rosae Crucis.** Our principles^lo not perm it us to m ake further com ­ ment or to give further information on the subject.** The important point in the m atter is not that this “ Rosicrucian Society’* (n ot O rder or Brotherhood) denies that Mr. H. S. Lew is is a member of their C ol­ lege, for this would in no way determ ine whether Mr. Lewis was a Rosicrucian or not, since he has never claimed to be a member of their C ollege or any other similar College or Society. The officers of the S. R. I. A. may consider that membership in their Society (adm ittedly created by a few men in recent y e a rs) is the sole determ ining factor a s to whether a man is entitled to Rosicrucian recognition or not, but t h * invportant point, however, is that it is claimed that Mr Lewis sought adm ission in that Society and w as denied adm ission. H ere are the absolutely correct fa c ts: A bout the first of January, 1914, Mr. Lewis noticed in the World A lm anac of that date a statem ent thatam ong other Societies in New Y ork City there w as one calling itself the Societas Rosicruciana, teach in g am ong other arcane subjects the principles of Druidism, Rosicrucianism , etc. A t that tim e he w as w ork­ ing on the preparatory plans and m atters for the es­ tablishment of A M ORC in A m erica during the com ing years, as he had been authorized to do, and w as su r­ prised to find a society in New Y ork using the term “ Rosicrucian.’* He had been distinctly inform ed by the Rosicrucian M aster in F ran ce in 1909 that there w as no Rosicrucian O rder in A m erica and he believe<i that he alone was the em powered Legate or represen ­ tative of the old O rder with sole rights to establish the O rder in Am erica. Th erefore he wrote to the 5. R. I. A. secretary at the address given in the W orld A l­ m anac and form ally asked for literature or inform a­ tion about the S. R. I. A., as w as offered by them. In the course of a few day s a letter w as received from the S. R. I. A . stating that they could not give detailed information of their origin unless inquirer first submitted an application blank for mem bership. T h e tone of'the letter and the reading m atter at the head o f the lettersheet prom ised much inform ation. Therefore: Mr. Lewis filled in the application blank and sent it to the Secretary along with a letter in which Mr. Lew is explained that he was "n o t unfam iliar with the his­ tory, philosophy, and entire p rop agan da of the O rd er Rosae C rucis.’* He also explained that he could not becom e a member of the S. R. I. A . and w as sending the application blank to them a s requested with theunderstanding that “ he w as in no 'way obligated by so d o in g /’

body to be known a s the Societa* R osicruciana in A m erica. There were no ill-feelings o r criticism s dis- played or sensed at this interview, nor in any inter­ view, conversation or correspondence since then, and it w as followed, on invitation, by a visit to a downtown building by Mr. H. S. Lew is to have a further inter­ view with one of the officers who w as an editor of a business and financial magazine. Mr. H. S. Lewis, the present Im perator of A . M. O. R. C., w as at that time conducting a very successful advertising business, b e­ ing engaged by the very largest firms in New Y ork to p repare their special advertising and business litera­ ture. H ence Mr. H. S. Lewis and the S. R. 1. A . offi­ cer had several interviews on general business and com m ercial affairs without touching upon the m atter of 'R osicrucianism any further than already stated. When the S. R. I. A. some time later issued one of its official pam phlets, a copy w as sent by them to Mr. H. S. Lewis, and there the whole m atter ended. No other correspondence p assed between the Im­ perator of our O rder and the S. R. I. A . H e never m ade any further request for literature and never sought to becom e a member of the S. R. I. A . W hy the officers of the S. R. I. A. therefore should now state that on June 5, 1914, they refused him adm ission to the O rder is incomprehensible. W hy did it take from Jan u ary to Jun e for the officers to decide that one who distinctly stated he did not desire to obligate himself to unite with them, could not b e adm itted? A nd why did he never hear of this point until A . M. O. R. C. becam e very active three y ears later? A nd since they see fit continually to refer to the fact that our Im perator wrote to them ask in g for conditions surrounding membership to their O rder, why do they not state also what w as meant in their letter of Ja n ­ uary 7th when they sa id : “ It m ay be possible that such a step m ay lead to mutually profitable and ad ­ vantageous resu lts?’* A nd why do they not repeat what is also in that letter of Jan u ary 7th, viz: In w riting to the S. R. I. A . and com plying with their re­ quests our Im perator clearly w arned them of his p osi­ tion and motives and was seeking the inform ation they volunteered “ with the under standing^that 1 am in no way obligated by so doing?*’ Perhaps their “ principles do not permit** them to give further information on the subject. A ll in all, the m atter is of little consequence except that som e one who is now sending forth officially signed letter* from the S. R. I. A . is doing a good m ovem ent and. some good men a great injustice through the m isrep­ resentation of facts to injure and deter the w ork of another and to mislead inquiring minds. A gain our Im perator states (a s he has done in pub­ lic prints and all our literature for several y e a r s ) : “ I have never made application for mem bership into any other Rosicrucian O rder or Society but the one wherein I w as accepted and em powered to carry on the w ork of the A . M. O. R. C., nor have I ever m ade application- for membership in any secret body and then denied adm ission; and I challenge any one to prove such a statem ent and make the m atter a case in any Court of Law .” (Sign ed ) SUPREM E SEC R E T A R Y . Now, the S. R. I. A . had the right and p rivilege of refusing to send any further inform ation to Mr. Lewts when he clearly stated his connection with the O rder Rosae C rucis and that he could not affiliate with any Rosicrucian Society. Mr. Lewis did not conceal the fact that he was not seeking m embership in the S. R. I. A., but simply w anted whatever facts of th eir organ ­ ization and p urp oses they cared to give him. He gave the S. R. 1. A . his home address and he w as called up on the phone several days later and pointedly asked if he intended to labor in connection with the French Rosicrucian O rder in / \ m erica an ^ w hether he w as in possession of any docum ents, p apers of auth ority, etc., from France. U pon answ ering that he w as in possession of the first p ap e rs of this kind to b e given to A m erica, the officer of the S. R. 1. A . stated he would write an official letter to Mr. Lewis. H ere is the letter, in part. It has been in our files all these years and hundreds have seen it afte r having read the statem ents m ade by the S. R. 1. A . in connect tion with this m atter. The letterhead b e a rs the full name of the S. R. I. A . with their sym bol* and seals and is dated from Grantwood, New Jersey , the home of one of the officers and the h eadquarters of the S o ­ ciety at that time. It can be seen by an y on e wishing to see it, or com plete copies will be sent to any of our m embers who require it. Only the beginning and closing of the letter a re important. “ Grantwood, New Jersey, Seventh Jan u ary , A nno MCMX1V. (Ja n u a ry 7, 1 9 1 4 .) “ My D ear Mr. Lew is: “ Your recent letter to the Secretary-G eneral h as been referred to me for reply. “ I fear there is som e m isunderstanding, a s you state in your letter that you enclose the signed application blank with the distinct ‘understanding that you a re in no way obligated by so d oin g/ * * * * * Furtherm ore, if, a s you state, you are not unfam iliar with the history, philosophy and entire propagan da of the Rosae C ru cia’ you m ust be aw are of the extent to which it has conserved its p ra c ­ tises and operations in the past, and the sam e is equally true today. “ However, laying aside the m atter of the m isunder­ standing, 1 shall invite you to send a phon e call to Mr. George Lewis, R ector 5355, the Sen ior M agus of the S. R. I. A . Lew is called Mr. G eorge Lew is on the phone and at the latter’ s suggestion a luncheon engagem ent w as arran ged for the following day or the day th ereafter. Mr. George Lewis, Mr. Khei (G eorge P lum m er) an d .oth ers were present. It turned out to be a battle of wits, for the officers of the S. R. I. A . refused to com m it themselves except to explain their p lan s and hopes in r< gard to founding a society of R osicru cian seekers and students in New Y ork City, and ask ed the co­ operation of Mr. H. S. Lewis to the extent that he abandon his activities in behalf of the A . M. O. R. C. Mr. H. S. Lewis refused to do this. H e offered to co­ operate with them in connection with any plan tend* ing to bring seekers-together and into a body of true Rosicrucians, but could not assist in the form ing o f a
