Introduction

Welcome to the blackswan business innovation and transformation module at masters level. In this module you are introduced the key concepts of systematic innovation and business transformation.

Delivery of this module is by lectures and workshops. Day 1 will be on scenario planning and data gathering. There will be 3 lectures on Day 2- 4. The 5th Day will be a Panel discussion with a presentation from the students.

1. Rationale
This module provides you with an in depth analysis on how to grow a business by focusing on innovation and transformation. The module will teach you how to make a step change in your business by focusing on tangible benefits that enable the student to tackle problems or opportunity situations theyre working on. The module will explain the science behind intangibles and how they can use some of the theory to understand predictable trends. The module will help you understand the dynamics and scope in thinking styles of customers.

2. Aims & Objectives


To bridge the gap between theory and practice. To provide students with a critical understanding of innovation and transformation in the business world. To simulate practical situations whereby students are able to learn about real life business transformation issues with real data. To develop an active learning environment where students engage with speakers and give their thoughts and understanding.

3. Content Synopsis
This module introduces students to innovation and transformation. In doing so the key issues are introduced as to how students will be more innovative in their learning styles and leadership in these areas. This is in line with a written paper and presentation that need to be completed.

4. Indicative Content
Scenario Planning in Business transformation, Systematic Innovation, Learning Styles, Personality types, Business leadership and talent development, and Business Transformation.

5. Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this module, students will have demonstrated:

Knowledge based outcomes: 1. A critical understanding of the methods and tools of strategic innovation management for the development of new business models. 2. A critical understanding in recognising trends and opportunities and how to use them to increase competitiveness. 3. A clear understanding of the various levels and components that come into play in business transformation. 4. A deep understanding into Transformational DNA and how this applies to building businesses for the future. Skill based outcomes: 1. How to compose and implement innovation strategies for companies. 2. How to recognise trends and opportunities for companies and to use them to increase competitiveness. 3. How to master methods and tools of strategic innovation management for the development of new business models. 4. The skills necessary to manage transformation and to shape organisations in an innovation-oriented way. 5. The competencies necessary to build transformational businesses 6. The skills necessary to use a networked approach and take over management in companies.

6. Teaching & Learning:


The teaching and learning strategies will be based around one week of lectures and class based workshops. The module will adopt blackswans transformational diagnostic system TransformationDNA as part of the learning and educational experience. Module framework will include learning styles analysis, thinking styles, multiple learning routes, video & text formats, external resources and background materials, online multiple choice type assessments, downloading and uploading of assignments, usage and performance monitoring and student forms.

Learning hours:

Scenario planning workshop: 8 hours Lectures: 8 hours: 24 hours Presentations and panel discussions: 8 hours The module will be delivered by blackswan consultants. The students must take responsibility to ensure that they carry out and complete the necessary work to progress through the module. Lectures will be used to deliver and explain basic information via core materials and by examples. The workshop will deal with scenario planning relating to business transformation on the day one.

7. Assessment:
Formative Assignment Research Investigation: Group Learning Outcomes: 1,2,3,4 Students must successfully complete the assignment in order to pass the module and demonstrate 100% attendance for the week. Issue Date: 14th May Submission Date: 18th May

Session 1: Scenario Planning Objectives: Explain the TransformationDNA process Go through case study being used for written paper and presentation Example the assessment process Required reading: Given case study

Session 2: Strategic Innovation Objectives: Explain the science behind systematic innovation Go through the different learning styles of people in an innovative way Learn about Perception mapping in solving problems

Session 4: Business transformation Objectives: Define the characteristics of a transformation in a given industry Learn about how Organisations can adapt during turbulent times Get a clear understanding of what is a blackswan business - a disrupter in the market. Required reading: None

Session 4: Panel discussion and presentation Objectives: Panel discussion on material covered in a question and answer session Students give presentations and are assessed by the panel Required reading: None

10. Assessment
A. Group Paper 60% Students in groups of 3 or 4 must complete a 2000 word paper on a given topic. Students will assume the role of CEO of a given Fortune 500 company. Students will be asked to look at the organisations current challenges and future aspirations and measure its current and future state using the blackswan TransformationDNA system. They will also be asked to build a roadmap of how the organisation would make the transformation from current to future. All learning outcomes will be assessed. Students argue their findings to show how they might convince a management team to implement the changes that are needed.

Knowledge: The module is assessed by one piece of course work, taking into account a students directed reading and comprehension exercises within the class workshops and lectures. Skills: 7. The competencies necessary to take a business through a stage of transformation. 8. The skills necessary to understand where an organisation can make a step change.

B. Group Presentation 40% Each group will be asked to give a presentation on their given topic. Knowledge: Critical appraisal of students, individual and team learnings through a presentation. Skills: 9. 10. Bring into practice the learnings from the course work. The ability to debate issues and answer questions from the given case study.
