Hand drill & very small drill bit 2. you need a handful of easy-to-find components: Materials 1. Hand clamp 7. Tiny nut or washer that fits onto the brass tubing (see video) Tools 1. step 1: Materials and Tools To make the XRV. Small spring . The video does a lot of explaining. Flexible bike pump hose .com/id/Airgun-with-eXplosive-air-Release-Valve/ . Pliers or multi-grips (pictured) 6.comes with most bicycle pumps) 2.also from hardware stores 5.License: Attribution Non-commercial Share Alike (by-nc-sa) Intro: Airgun with eXplosive air-Release Valve Forget amateurish sprinkler valves. Superglue http://www. This is my own design inspired by the valve inside an airbrush.instructables. This in turn allows you to turn an ordinary blowgun or pea-shooter into something a bit more serious. Fine file 3. which can be attached to a bicycle pump. Brass or aluminium tubing (about 1-2mm) . This instructable shows you how to make what I call the XRV (explosive release valve). Tiny screw that fits into the end of the 1-2mm tubing 6. O-Rings (tiny) . Precision screwdriver 5.available from hardware stores 4. see the next steps. but for more detail including how it works. Blade 4.available from hobby stores 3. Look no further than this type of valve for making airguns or anything where you need the air released explosively.

there's one! Image Notes 1. O-Rings (you'll need really really small ones) 9. hand drill 2.Image Notes 1. hand clamp 7. pliers or multi-grips 6. precision screwdriver 5. found this in an old clock radio http://www.instructables. very small drill bit(s) 3. small spring (like that from a pen) Image Notes 1. blade 4. super glue 8.com/id/Airgun-with-eXplosive-air-Release-Valve/ .

com/id/Airgun-with-eXplosive-air-Release-Valve/ . Image Notes 1. so cut the MALE connector out of your bike pump's flexible hose.step 2: the valve housing We need the valve to attach conveniently to any bicycle pump. the male connector is the one with the thread on the outside.instructables. http://www.

It is absolutely necessary that this tube slides freely through the housing.com/id/Airgun-with-eXplosive-air-Release-Valve/ .instructables.step 3: the valve shaft Now you need to find a piece of brass or aluminium tubing that fits nicely inside the housing. With a tiny drill bit. File any rough edges smooth so the tube glides through the housing without sticking at all. carefully drill two or three small holes into the shaft. there's one! step 4: Valve air flow Air will explode through this small tube. Image Notes 1. while being a snug fit. but we need to drill tiny holes to allow this to happen. http://www.

so that the only escape for the air is through the tiny holes we've just drilled.com/id/Airgun-with-eXplosive-air-Release-Valve/ . so you'll need to hunt for the perfect screw.old electronic components are a great source of tiny screws! Drop a bit of super glue onto the screw and turn it in to the end of the tube. Then the screw should be a tighter fit.instructables. The screw must also be very short (we don't want to obstruct the holes). The head of the screw MUST be very slightly larger than the shaft itself. I found that a tiny screw works best. If the screw is a bit too small for the tube..step 5: Plugging up the shaft The end of the shaft must be blocked off. I found the perfect screw inside a dead clock-radio . you could very carefully crimp the tube a bit with pliers. http://www.

try crimping the tube slightly. Once the glue has dried. so find something that fits and glue it about halfway along. found this in an old clock radio Image Notes 1. so be sure everything's in place before you apply the glue. washer or bush of some kind needs to be added to the shaft.Image Notes 1. step 6: Add a nut to the shaft A nut. http://www.com/id/Airgun-with-eXplosive-air-Release-Valve/ . if the screw is a loose fit.instructables. this valve will be difficult to disassemble.

look at the video in the Intro of this instructable. scrape off any excess with a blade. step 8: Spring loading See the distance between the housing and the nut? You need to find a spring that's about 1.instructables.com/id/Airgun-with-eXplosive-air-Release-Valve/ . this valve shaft must be very smooth and glide through the housing without any sticking or catching.step 7: Important! Allow the glue to dry Allowing the glue to dry deserves its own step because in the next step we're going to add a spring that holds the valve closed.5 times as long. then you'll glue the valve shut! Go have a coffee or climb a tree. you can always stretch it a little (that's why mine looks a little irregular in the image). Again. When you get back and the glue's dry. If your spring is a little too short. http://www. To how to turn the spring onto the shaft. If your glue isn't dry when you add the spring. This will ensure that the spring is always holding the valve shut.

instructables. Pulling back on the nut (green arrow) opens the valve by exposing the holes in the shaft. you'll need a very small O-Ring. The head of the screw stops the O-Ring from slipping off. Air cannot escape unless the O-Ring fails. You can test this with your mouth.com/id/Airgun-with-eXplosive-air-Release-Valve/ .step 9: Seal it off The final step is to make the valve air tight. the compressed air explodes through the shaft. And with that. the O-Ring seals off any escape. http://www. step 10: How it works The spring constantly keeps the valve shut. Note: if air is leaking through the valve. Try adding a second O-Ring. When the valve is shut. Now you can see why the head of the screw needed to be larger than the shaft. Seal your lips around the housing of the valve and blow. Once the holes are exposed.. the XRV is complete! The spring is always holding the valve closed so air will not escape. To do this. then it could be that your O-Ring isn't sealing it too well. build up a little air pressure in your cheeks then pull the washer/nut backwards (don't push it down your throat!) The air should escape through the tube.

it needs to have its own built-in one-way valve. the valve will connect to any bicycle pump. need a bicycle pump that doesn't allow air to go backwards. it acts as a small air tank. Opening the XRV into any type of blowgun (simple pea-shooter or deadly ninja blowgun) is the aim of the whole exercise :D Image Notes 1. you won't be able to compress more than one plunge of the pump. http://www. You will however.step 11: Attaching to a bicycle pump As we made the XRV from a male connector. When the end of this hose is blocked (with my XRV). If you don't have this. but the 'BBB Airshock' pump that I use has a one-way valve PLUS a reinforced hose. it will attach perfectly to any bicycle pump. Air will be compressed in that tiny space and will only be released when I open the XRV. In other words. Many pumps (bicycle pumps.com/id/Airgun-with-eXplosive-air-Release-Valve/ .instructables. sports ball pumps) come fitted with a one-way valve.

1:46 PM REPLY this is very cool for a blowgun or dart gun but sprinkler valves are used for their quick release of air which this wont let out enough air fast enough unless you supersize it. There is way more air pressing against it. nothing beats a custom made one!!! blugyblug says: Oct 17. no offense intended very cool design by the way AnarchistAsian says: Sep 17. ur exagerrating the loss that twists and turns do. and wish me luck. and about that release time. 2008.. Jun 10.. If you are comparing the XRV to an unmodded sprinkler valve thats just. You cant make a large version of the XRV.. 2008. Good release time/flow with sharp turns.. sprinkler valves suck! they're made to actuate the sprinklers on your lawn! even with modification. 2010. Jan 27. bulky.. 11:21 PM REPLY ultimachris says: that's true. 1:18 PM REPLY it's a small valve. if you look inside a sprinkler valve.. very funny.Advertisements Comments 50 comments Add Comment view all 208 comments Jan 27. its not im possible. 8:44 AM REPLY kaos863 says: is the valve housing from a presta hose or a schrader hose. 2009. 2008.5* Jan 23. 12:51 AM REPLY Again. blugyblug says: UNmodded sprinkler valve. 2009.. 10:24 AM REPLY Mattrox says: Sep 15. this has a tiny opening have a longer realese time Sep 17. but this valve was intended for shooting bbs.. 2008... 12:52 PM REPLY thejrb says: Nov 13. CaseBoy says: LOVE the vid. 3:37 PM REPLY guys all you need to do is supersize the XRV!!!! i almost did it yesterday.instructables. larger orings. the barrel is small.com/id/Airgun-with-eXplosive-air-Release-Valve/ . thats why it is so small.. so it doesn't matter much how small the opening is. i used 9/16th brass tubing some pvc a larger spring. 12:46 PM REPLY but sprinkler valves are big. AnarchistAsian says: Sep 17. If i get it to work im gonna hook it up to my nerf longshot :D so when i pull the trigger it released the air.. 1:47 PM REPLY How would you know? Have you modded your sprinkler valve or does it still use battery's? This valve is probably faster than an unmodded sprinkler valve. un-stylish and over-priced! this one is small. You wont have enough strength to push the valve backwards. Jan 22. and looks good with all the brass and other metal parts. not potatoes.stupid Nov 19. since the air has to take several sharp turns before it even reaches the barrel. all i need to do is make it air tight and im pretty much set. 2010. 2010. 6:21 PM REPLY fork me3 says: Dec 23. 2010. Like what? 500x? 1000x for massive guns? http://www. good luck. they let tons of out because they have big openings. 2008. there is a big loss of power. 2008. Sprinkler valves dont suck. 1:16 PM REPLY flanimal says: COOL . 2008. larger everything! just remember.4. I dont know anything about pumps.

Well Im proving my points.. and there alot of flow. and can be upscaled. Oct 17. AnarchistAsian says: Oct 16. 2008.. thejrb says: Nov 13. Flow is waaaay more important than twists and turns etc... but a valve with no twists is alot worse than a valve with twists but lots of flow. 2008. this is a good valve. you might tear the diaphragm. Oct 18. and sprinkler valves are bulky. it may not seem like much but youre getting 3x-4x more power.lasermaster3531 says: Dec 23. Bad flow.. But using the xrv on a large gun would be basically impossible to shoot. 2008. 4:04 PM REPLY blugyblug says: Oct 16... It might look like it doesnt matter but thats because theres not much difference with a tiny barrel. For something this small it has good flow.okay? sprinkler valves are good for big guns and xrv's are good for dart guns that have an id of 3 mm.. 5:18 PM REPLY AnarchistAsian says: Oct 17. with pipes. 2008.. meh. And flow matters. 2008. unless you trigger(no other words) it with air like a piston valve. 3:42 PM REPLY http://www." thing first.. the air is slowed down. 2008.. even a ball valve. or less. because of the twists and turns inside the valve.. Dec 29. 7:35 AM REPLY actually. Piston Valves are the best 1-shot valves in my opinion. 2008. plus. 2008. Anyway. It matters. Not arguing. As soon as the bb leaves the barrel all the air that hasn't been released yet is wasted. 2008. but you can build bigger ones with better opening flow characteristics. ramses says: or you could build a piston valve and get the best of both worlds. This valve has lots of turns as well...(I mean scaled up) If there was one of these valves as big as a sprinkler or visa versa a sprinkler would have alot more flow. it depends how big you want it. and sprinkler valves are diaphragm valves. the only problem is if your pilot valve is good. any slow opening valve can be made better with a burst disk in front of it. opens as fast as air (literally) ramses says: Dec 30. 1:50 PM REPLY I would rather have faster opening time.... 3:02 PM REPLY Mattrox says: And how can you upscale it if you try upscaling it it will need a crank to trigger the valve Oct 17. blugyblug says: Oct 17. 2008. blugyblug says: Lol we are proving our points. AnarchistAsian says: no. 3:44 PM REPLY you're comparing a squirt gun with a fire hose here. 5:36 PM REPLY Yeah true lol. a diaphragm valve is the best..com/id/Airgun-with-eXplosive-air-Release-Valve/ . unless either of us has actual proof of our views. 2:40 PM REPLY flow doesn't matter if you have a small barrel. so.... Dec 25.. because the valve hole is the same as the barrel hole. the barrel would block any extra flow anyways.instructables.. 2008. no twists/turns. 2008. doesnt depend on the size of the barrel. let's stop arguing.. blugyblug says: Yeah But if you upscaled it. But then a piston valve is easier to make. 7:26 PM REPLY well. But if you double the flow. The best for power is a burst disk but you have to replace it everytime you shoot. 12:40 AM REPLY Hey! I was doing the ". 12:39 AM REPLY Sprinklers have more flow. 2:30 PM REPLY blugyblug says: Dec 29. 2008.

2008. They use a hammer to hit it and release stuff in short bursts. blugyblug says: Oct 17..) Like a piston schithen says: Jun 11. so theres no valve outlet basically. Not a poppet valve. I suggest you build one yourself so that you can more effectively offer proof to the contrary . but they are the same valves and many images are animated Mattrox says: i disagree with you so i think we should just agree to disagree Sep 16. 2008. but this valve is neither a poppet valve.instructables. 7:25 PM REPLY (continuing from my post) Since you said that the valve hole is the same as the barrel hole. but I've since learned (from a comment here) that the design already exists and it's called a 'poppet valve'. A spool valve (what we have here) is where a small tube is moved forward and back in a slightly larger tube to open and close holes to let air through Look sources: http://www. 6:20 PM REPLY blugyblug says: Oct 17. You might as well make a piston valve. 7:22 PM REPLY Sure you can upscale it. 2008.html Yes I know it is paintball. 11:24 PM REPLY Its a hammer valve.com/tech/misc/markers_hammer. This is because the tiniest opening of the valve results in ALL the air exploding out. Downside there is that a squeeze trigger will release all the air in one shot. 2008. youll have to be a muscleman.. (1inch for those US people) chluaid says: Oct 18.zdspb. theres hardly any air pressing against it which is why it is easy to fire. But how are you going to shoot it? Just pushing the thing back wont work.zdspb. A hammer valve is any valve opened temporaraly by a striker (or hammer) periodically hitting it. blugyblug says: Nov 19. a piston valve would have exactly the same flow. HEAPS more than this small one.com/tech/misc/markers_nohammer. This valve is a spool valve.. then a tubular valve hammer to hit the valve open in short bursts though I still believe you could manually open it without too much trouble. but I gotta disagree.. but does make a fair difference in efficiency A poppet valve is a disc moving into and out of a tube to allow air to move around it. I imagine you'd need an air compressor to fill a tank. 7:49 PM REPLY http://www.. Lots of people have done this on Spudfiles by the way.. 2009. but then you will need a piston AS well as the XRV. 2008. 7:26 PM REPLY 5mm. 6:14 AM REPLY Sorry to interupt. When i said "large scale" I actually meant maybe an XRV for a 30mm-50mm air chamber.. 2008. possibly fit a squeezable trigger to make it even easier. 2008. like 1 1/4' . 7:08 PM REPLY none taken. blugyblug says: oops. Piston valves block the barrel.) blugyblug says: Oct 18. The difference between a poppet and spool valve is rather small at first. nor a hammer valve. There's no gradual or slow release. Some people also made this pneumatically actuated (how nerdy does that sound.html http://www. Large versions will need to be pneumatically actuated. chluaid says: Sep 16. This would be better phraised as a hammer opperated valve. see? we never argue.2 ' Oct 18.. Oct 18. so a tubular hammer to smack the valve open would be the way to go. not 1 inch. 2008. Theres heaps of air pressing against the nut and 0-ring. I called this the "explosive" air release valve for a reason. 5:08 PM REPLY hehe nobody's proving anything unless they build one to demonstrate their point :D I have built a larger scale version of this (5mm valve) and it takes no extra effort to push the valve back. 2008.. With this small one.chluaid says: Oct 18. 9:19 PM REPLY lol 30-50mm! What are you firing? Golf balls? If so can you please post a link. you probably should try a poppet valve for yourself though. if I can't build the release vaulve (thats why I'm looking at this) can I buy one cheap from anywhere?
