Advanced Research Projects Agency) untuk melayani departemen pertahanan USA. TCP/IP merupakan protokol standar jaringan komputer yang menggunakan sistem operasi UNIX. Saat ini banyak perusahaan komputer ikut melaksanakan protokol ini, sehingga memungkinkan adanya hubungan berbagai merek komputer dengan berbagai sistem operasi, seperti DOS, UNIX, OS/2, AOS/VS II, dsb. (http://www.protocols.com/pbook/tcpip1.htm) Walaupun tidak ada protokol yang mengikuti model OSI dengan tepat, tetapi pada intinya mempunyai fungsi-fungsi tersebut di atas telah disediakan oleh masing-masing layer yang ada di semua jaringan. Kebanyakan sistem (seperti IP) menggabungkan dua atau tiga lapisan menjadi satu, karena beberapa bagian protokol tersebut dapat menjangkau lebih dari satu layer di dalam model OSI.
