2.0 PROJECT DESCRIPTION

As per the provided information by the client, it is understood that the proposed project is a
24.0m hangar. It will consist of eight (8) floors including three (3) basements with an
approximate maximum floor area of 1528.0m
2
and lowest finished floor level (FFL) of 84.02m.
3.0 SITE DESCRIPTION

The proposed site for the project is located at a distance of approximately 2.0km south-west the
cave of the seven sleepers (Ahl Al-Kahf) within plots (448 & 449) and basin 1 Al-Modawara.
The plots are situated within Abu Alanda, south of Amman as shown in Figure No. 1.
According to our site visit, the site is bordered by a paved road to the north and west and by
unutilized plot from the remaining sides.

The site is gently elevated to the west side (the existing ground elevation ranges from 92.0m to
100.0m). As shown below, the entire site area is covered with topsoil materials. A general site

4.0 GEOLOGY OF THE AREA

According to the geological map of the area (AMMAN 31530-I) and as shown in Figure No. 3,
the general project area belongs to Balqa Group, represented by Wadi Umm Ghudran (B1) and
Amman Silicified Limestone (B2) and Ajlun Group, represented by Wadi As Sir Limestone
Formation (A7) and is covered by superficial (recent) deposits. A brief description of these
materials is given below.

4.1 Superficial (Recent) Deposits

The study area is covered by Holocene to Recent deposits. The superficial deposits
comprise of alluvial (wadi) sediments. The thickness, distribution, physical, chemical and
mineralogical properties of the superficial deposits depends mainly on the type of the
parent material, time, climate and topography.

4.1.1 Soil

The soil deposits are formed by the dissolution of Cretaceous bedrock, and consist of
three parts (upper, middle and lower parts). The upper part of the soil is dark to
grayish brown, soft to stiff silty clay, containing gravel, cobbles and boulders of
chert and silicified limestone. The middle part of the soil is brown, soft to firm silt.
The lower layer is reddish brown, soft to firm silty clay containing angular gravel,
cobbles and boulders of chert.

4.2 Belqa Group

4.2.1 Amman Silicified Limestone Formation (B2)

This formation is named after the city of Amman and it is consist of thin to medium
bedded gray, white or brown chert, gray limestone (as beds or concretions up to
1.0m in diameter), dolomitic chalky marl, thin bedded chalk and thick bedded oyster
coquina.

The formation forms steep slopes in the lower part due to the presence of chert and
limestone beds, changing upward to gentle slopes as a result of increasing marly
limestone beds.

4.2.2 Wadi Umm Ghudran Formation (B1)

This formation is named after Wadi Umm Ghudran Ed Dib, south east of Irbid. Wadi
Umm Ghudran formation consists of two parts (lower and upper). The lower part
consists of thinly bedded yellow to white grey locally pink grey, soft, massive
chalky limestone while the upper part consists of limestone and chalky marl
typically pink to yellow grey, hard, medium to thin bedded, fossiliferous to coquinal
limestone with thin bands or concretions of chert, alternating with yellow to white
grey chalky marl.

This formation forms distinctive yellow to white grey gentle slopes between the
underlying Wadi As Sir and the overlying Amman Silicified Formation.

4.3 Ajlun Group

4.3.1 Wadi As Sir Limestone Formation (A7)

This formation is named after Wadi As Sir town, west of Amman, and it is consists
of three units. The lower unit comprises dolomite, dolomitic limestone and locally
recrystallized limestone and due to secondary iron oxides the bed of this unit is
characterized by the red color, the middle unit consists of relatively soft marly
limestone and limestone and the upper unit consists of thick bedded to massive
limestone including fossiliferous beds.

Wadi As Sir formation is rich in calcite veins and thin beds of oysters. The
formation forms a steep slopes and cliffs of limestone of grey-weathering colors
intercalated with marly limestone and marl.

The geological map also indicates that a minor NW-SE Faults might exist in the northern and
southern parts of the project site area, but it is not exposed at the surface because of superficial
cover of alluvial fans and other deposits.

5.0 SEISMICITY AND EARTHQUAKES

According to the Jordanian seismic code (published by the ministry of public works and housing
in Oct. 2005), as shown in the seismic zoning map (Figure No. 4) the site lies within zone (2A);
with a seismic zone factor Z=0.15 as shown in Table No. 1. The encountered materials at the
project site are classified as (S
C
) type. The seismic factor related to the acceleration C
a
=0.18,
whereas the seismic factor related to the velocity C
v
=0.25. These factors should be used in the
design of the proposed project. For more information see Appendix C (Seismicity and

6.1 Field Exploration

6.1.1 Drilling

Seven (7) boreholes (BH-01 through BH-07) were drilled at the site of proposed
project area between 9
th
and 16
th
Jan., 2012. The locations of these boreholes were
selected and marked in the field by ACES Engineer using GPS techniques. The
locations of all boreholes are shown in Figure No. 2.

The boreholes were drilled to approximate depths ranging from 21.0 to 30.0m below
the existing ground surface with a total drilled depth of 174.0m. The numbers and
depths of boreholes were determined based on the provided building information
(number of floors, floor areas and lowest finished floor level) and topography to
satisfy the Jordanian Engineers Association (JEA) requirements for this project.

Drilling was executed with the aid of two rigs, namely, Edicho 36-1 rotary rig
(mounted on Mercedes truck 1417, capacity 400m) and Mobile Drill 31-1 rotary
rig (mounted on Mercedes truck 911, capacity 200m), using the rotary air flush
drilling technique. Logs of the boreholes are presented in Appendix A. Borehole
numbers and depths are summarized in Table No. 2.

6.1.2 Sampling and Field Testing

6.1.2.1 Undisturbed Samples

Undisturbed core samples were obtained from the boreholes in the chalky to
clayey marl materials (B1) with relatively good recoveries and very poor
RQD (due to the presence of thin weak layers interbedded with thin strong
layers at the encountered materials). The samples were obtained using a
double tube core barrel (T6-101 series-79.0mm ID) and a tungsten carbide
(TC) bit. Drilling was conducted using rotary drilling techniques with air
flush as a drilling medium. Coring was performed in accordance to ASTM D
2113. The recovery and RQD values versus depth for all cores are presented
on logs of boreholes (Appendix A).

The recovered samples were examined, visually described by our geologists
in accordance with appropriate standards (BS 5930; ASTM D2488), placed in
proper sequence in wooden boxes and taken to our laboratories for testing.
The samples were placed in waterproof plastic bags before being placed in
wooden boxes to maintain their natural water content

Undisturbed Samples (Chalky to Clayey Marl Materials)

6.1.2.2 Disturbed Samples

Disturbed but representative soil samples were retrieved from inside the split
spoon samplers after each standard Penetration Test (SPT). The recovered
samples were visually described and placed in watertight plastic bags to
maintain the moisture content.

Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) were performed in BH-01 and BH-05 at
various depths in the chalky to clayey marl (B1) materials to obtain
approximate dynamic resistance of the ground materials. The tests were
performed in accordance with ASTM D 1586-08a. The SPT equipment used
in this project consisted of auto-trip hammers (63.5kg weight) and 45.0cm
long split tube (5.0cm diameter). Further discussion on the SPT test results is
provided in section 7.2, where the results of the SPT are presented in
Appendix A (Log of Boreholes).

Percussion drilling techniques (down-the-hole hammer) were used at intervals
where no undisturbed samples or SPTs were performed. Additional disturbed
samples were obtained during this process.

6.2 Laboratory Testing

In order to determine the physical and mechanical properties of the encountered materials,
water (moisture) content, atterberg limits, bulk density, specific gravity, particle size
analysis, point load and unconfined compressive strength tests were performed on selected
samples from the boreholes.

The tests were performed according to the relevant American Society for Testing and
Materials (ASTM) Standards. Table No. 3 presents the applicable standards for these tests.
The results of the physical and mechanical tests are summarized in Table No. 6 whereas
the test sheets are presented in Appendix B.

7.0 SURFACE AND SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS

7.1 Ground Materials

The geological description of ground materials at the site and the approximate average
depths at which they were encountered in the boreholes are presented in logs of boreholes
(Appendix A) and are described below:

1. Topsoil Material:
Topsoil materials composed of reddish brown silty clay with gravel and cobbles of
chert. This material was encountered at the surface level of boreholes (BH-01, BH-02,
BH-03 & BH-07) and extends to approximate depths ranging from 0.2m to 2.0m
below the existing ground surface (i.e., thickness ~ 0.2m 2.0m).

2. Intercalated Materials (B2):
Intercalated to interbedded materials composed of creamy, very weak (partly clayey)
chalky marl, grayish brown to gray, fractured, medium bedded, strong to very strong
silicified limestone to chert; off-white, weak to moderately weak, chalky marlstone to
chalky limestone. This material was encountered at the surface level of boreholes
(BH-04, BH-05 & BH-06) and at approximate depths ranging from 0.2m to 2.0m at
boreholes (BH-01, BH-02, BH-03 & BH-07) and extends to approximate depths
ranging from 5.0m to 11.0m below the existing ground surface (i.e., thickness ~ 4.5m
11.0m).

3. Chalky to Clayey Marl Materials (B1):
Creamy with rosy laminations, very weak, massive, jointed, moist, chalky marl (partly
clayey); intercalated with some off-white to creamy, weak (lithified) chalky marlstone
bands and few chert nodules at upper parts. This material was encountered at all
drilled boreholes at approximate depths ranging from 5.0m to 11.0m and extends to
the maximum depths of each borehole.

Generalized subsurface profile for the encountered materials is presented in Figure No. 5.
This profile is based on the results from the seven (7) drilled boreholes.

7.2 SPT Test Results

Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) were performed in BH-01 and BH-05 at various depths
in the chalky to clayey marl (B1) materials. Table No. 4 presents the SPT depth in each
borehole, the materials at that depth, SPT blow counts and SPT N values.

The definition of SPT and useful SPT correlations for granular and cohesive soils are
presented in the legend to borehole logs (Appendix A). The (N) value in the chalky to
clayey marl (B1) materials ranged from 42 to refusal (>50).

7.3 Materials Physical and Mechanical Properties

Laboratory test results for the encountered materials retrieved during drilling are provided
in Table No. 5. Additionally, a summary of the test results for each layer along with the
geological description are presented in Table No. 6. The laboratory test sheets are
included in Appendix B.

Basic index and classification tests were performed on the recovered samples. It should be
noted, that some of the grain size analyses performed on the encountered materials are not
representative of the layer as it was performed on the disturbed samples obtained during
percussive drilling where all the hard materials were crushed and broken into pieces.

7.4 Ground Water and Cavities

No free ground water or cavities were encountered in any of the boreholes to the drilled
depths during or after the completion of drilling activities. However, the surface hydrology
is outside the scope of this study.

8.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the field observations and laboratory testing, subsurface conditions, engineering
analysis and practical experience, the following recommendations are provided:

8.1 Foundation Depth and Type

Foundation depth is generally determined based on combination of design requirements,
suitable ground and minimum foundation embedment below the lowest finished level of
ground surrounding the structure (i.e. foundation ground cover).

According to the information provided by the client, the lowest finished floor level (FFL)
of the 3
rd
basement is 84.02m. Accordingly, it is recommended to lay the building
foundations directly on the chalky to clayey marl materials (B1), which were
encountered in all drilled boreholes at approximate elevation ranging from 86.0m to
88.0m. This foundation ground is suitable to support the imposed loads on any shallow
foundation system such as individual footings with tie beams and/or strip footing.
However, foundations should never be laid directly on the existing topsoil materials.

The minimum foundation depth may vary according to the architectural requirements but
due to the nature of bearing materials (low potential expansiveness), it should not be less
than (1.5m) below the lowest finished level of ground surrounding the building. In
addition, the foundation shall penetrate the recommended foundation ground (chalky to
clayey marl materials (B1)) for a minimum depth of 0.5m. Deeper excavation will be
needed at the entire area through the topsoil and intercalated materials until the
recommended foundation ground level is reached.

8.2 Allowable Bearing Pressure

The net allowable bearing pressure for the chalky to clayey marl materials (B1)
materials can be calculated from the point load and unconfined compression test on the
core samples obtained from the chalky to clayey marl materials (B1). The net allowable
bearing pressure was calculated based on these results using the following Terzaghi
equation:

q
all(net)
(kg/cm
2
) = (N
c
* S
u
)
F.S
Where:
N
c
: bearing capacity shape factor (N
c
= 6 for circular/square footing)
S
u
: undrained shear strength; S
u
= q
u
/2 (q
u
= unconfined strength).
F.S: factor of safety (F.S = 3)

The unconfined compressive strength values of the tested materials ranged from 6.75-
20.34 kg/cm
2
(for the layers of the chalky to clayey marl). This range of values is due to
the interbedded nature of the encountered materials in which different material types and
strengths were encountered.

Due to the mentioned interbedded nature of the bearing materials, and the presence of
highly moist, very weak layers of chalky to clayey marl at the expected foundation
ground, and based on our experience, a conservative net allowable bearing pressure value
of 2.7 kg/cm is recommended for the entire chalky to clayey marl materials (B1)
material. Note that the total allowable bearing pressure will be higher when the
overburden is taken into account. It should be mentioned that the chalky to clayey marl
materials (B1) was dealt with as soil materials.

8.3 Foundation Settlement

The consolidation settlement of the foundation ground is expected to be insignificant
(negligible) due to the nature of ground materials, stress history and absence of water
table. The elastic (immediate) settlement of the encountered materials can be calculated
using the following equation based on the theory of elasticity (from Das: Principles of
Geotechnical Engineering, 2001):
s = q
all
x B x (1-) x I
Em
Where:
s: elastic settlement of rigid footing.
q
all
: net allowable bearing pressure (2.7 kg/cm
2
).
B: width of the footing.
I: Influence factor for foundations, which is equal to:
x 0.88 for square and circular footings.
x 2.10 for strip footing (L/B=10).
: Poisson's ratio of the materials ( assumed to be 0.3).
Em: Youngs modulus of the materials.
Em = j x Mr x qu

Where:
j: mass factor related to the rock quality description (RQD). According to Tomlinson
(after Hobbs) j = 0.2 for RQD = 0 50%.
Mr: the ratio between the deformation modulus and the unconfined compression strength
(qu) of the intact rock. According to Tomlinson, Mr = 300 for indurated (coquinal)
carbonates mudstone.
qu: Unconfined Compressive Strength (average qu=10 kg/cm
2
).

According to the above, the calculated modulus of the rock mass (Em) value is 600
kg/cm
2
. Therefore, the estimated foundation settlement is:
x For square footing: 0.36cm per meter width of footing.
x For strip footing: 0.86cm per meter width of footing.

8.4 Excavation Methods

It is expected that the excavation will be carried out in the topsoil, intercalated and chalky
to clayey marl materials. Therefore, pneumatic equipment such as jackhammer will be
needed in addition to the conventional excavation equipment such as loaders and dozers
for excavation work at the site.

8.5 Excavation of Side Slopes

During construction and to ensure the stability of the side slopes, the temporary
excavation sides should be cut at a face inclination not steeper than:

x One horizontal to one vertical (1H: 1V) for the topsoil materials.
x One horizontal to two vertical (1H: 2V) for the intercalated and chalky to clayey
marl materials.

If this side slope can not be achieved for insufficient lateral distance or for any other
reason, temporary lateral support (shoring) system may be necessary and should be
considered.

8.6 Drainage

It is recommended to protect the foundation ground and excavation from surface water
both during and after construction by providing proper drainage and protection system
and maintaining the sewer and water system of the structure continuously. The rain water
and surface water (if any) which is collected from the rain water ducts and from ground
surface should be directed away from the structure.

8.7 Backfill Material and Compaction Criteria

The existing materials on site are considered unsuitable fill material (engineered fill or
backfill).

x Selected Backfill Materials:
The materials to be used for backfilling purposes under bottom slab and behind
underground walls shall be a soil or soil-rock mixture, which is free from organic
matter or other deleterious substances. It shall not contain rocks or lumps over 15 cm in
greatest dimension, and not more than 15 percent larger than 7 cm. The fine materials
(passing sieve 200) shall not exceed 35 percent. The plasticity index for the backfill
material shall not be more than 10 percent. It shall be spread in lifts not exceeding
25cm in uncompacted thickness, moisture conditioned to its optimum moisture content,
and compacted to density not less than 95 percent of the maximum dry density as
obtained by modified proctor compaction test (ASTM D 1557-09).

x Retaining Walls:
The backfill materials immediately behind the retaining walls shall consist of
filter/drainage materials composed of clean coarse sand and gravel or crushed stone
conforming to the following gradation requirements:

These materials shall extend vertically from the bottom of the walls to a level of
approximately 1m below the finished ground level behind the walls. The top 1m shall
be backfilled with relatively impervious materials.

8.8 Earth Pressure

Assuming that there are no sustained surcharges, no back slope and no hydrostatic
pressure conditions, the following soil parameters may be used in the design (based on our
experience with similar materials).

Table No. 7
Selected Soil/Rock Parameters
*Notes: For earth pressure calculation, cohesion should be considered zero due to tension cracks.

8.9 Foundation Excavation Inspection

The recommendations given in this report are based on the assumption that the subsurface
materials and conditions do not deviate appreciably from those disclosed in the borings.

Our office should be notified, in writing, immediately after foundation excavation and
before foundation construction to inspect the excavations and confirm that the required
ground is reached and all the undesirable and loose materials are removed.

Recovery : The percentage of length of core recovered in each run to the total length of the core run.
R.Q.D. : The Rock Quality Designation is the percentage of the sum of lengths of intact core pieces ten centimeters or longer to the
total length of the core run.
Point Load Strength and Unconfined Compressive Strength: In the point load test, a rock core is loaded between two steel cones
and failure occurs by tensile splitting. A point load strength index, Is, is calculated as the ratio of the applied load, P, at rupture to the
square of the distance, H, between the loading points: Is = P / H
2
.
A correlation that is commonly used between the point load index and the unconfined compressive strength, qu, of a cylinder with a
length to diameter ratio of 2 to 1 is: qu = 24 Is
(50).
.

(50)
is the point load strength corrected to a diameter of 50mm (Brock and Franklin, 1972).
