BACKGROUND Curtin University of Technology established the Research Fellowship Scheme in 1997 to support the University’s commitment to be a research intensive university. The scheme was expanded as a major strategic development under the University’s Research Management Plan 2006-2008. The scheme continues to be highly competitive and amongst the most prestigious Fellowship schemes in Australia. The call for applications in 2009, for commencement in 2010, refers to a targeted research-only Fellowship with two streams: a) Early Career Research (ECR) Fellowship Curtin will offer up to five (5) fixed-term ECR Fellowships. These will be for a period of up to four years as a research-only appointment. With the support of a School/Department in the University (i.e. an Enrolling Area), the Fellowships may be awarded for five years on the basis of an 80% research and 20% teaching appointment. Applications for the ECR Fellowships are called from suitably qualified applicants who received their PhD within the last five years 1 . All research areas will be considered; however, preference will be given to applicants who are able to make significant contributions to the following targeted areas of research activity: • • • • Social Infrastructure and Built Environment Creativity and Communication Digital Ecosystems Energy Markets • • • • • Mineral Chemistry Environmental Science/Engineering Chronic Disease Population Health Emerging Sciences
b) Senior Research Fellowships Curtin will offer up to eight (8) fixed-term Senior Research Fellowships. These will be for a period of up to four years as a research-only appointment. With the support of a School/Department in the University (i.e. an Enrolling Area), the Fellowships may be awarded for five years on the basis of an 80% research and 20% teaching appointment. Applications for the Senior Research Fellowships are called from suitably qualified applicants in all areas of research activity, with preference given to applicants who are able to make significant contributions to the following targeted areas of research activity: • • • • Social Infrastructure and Built Environment Creativity and Communication Digital Ecosystems Energy Markets • • • • • Mineral Chemistry Environmental Science/Engineering Chronic Disease Population Health Emerging Sciences

A full performance review will be conducted at Year 2 and Year 4.000 respectively will be provided in years two. A Fellow will be appointed as a staff member within the Enrolling Area or University Research Institute/Centre sponsoring the Fellowship application. Annual increments on the point scale shall be awarded subject to satisfactory performance. With the support of the Enrolling Area or University Research Institute/Centre a Research Fellowship may be awarded for five years on the basis of an 80% research and 20% teaching appointment (with 20% of the total cost of employment provided by the Enrolling Area).2 Appointment Details and Benefits Fellows will be required to commence appointment between 1 January and 30 June 2010.000. Senior Research Fellows will be remunerated at the ALC salary scale with the appointment for the first year being made at the first point of the scale. $3. Current salary scales are provided at Appendix A. CURTIN RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP SCHEME 1.000 will be provided in the first year and support of up to $10. It is expected that the Fellow’s research record will move progressively towards self-funding during the four year appointment period through success in externally-funded grant applications. Applicants who are not Australian citizens are encouraged to apply. prior to submitting the application. at an institution other than Curtin. Applications without the signature of the appropriate Head of Enrolling Area to confirm support will not be considered. Fellows wishing to apply for promotion during the term of the Research Fellowship should seek the advice of the relevant Head of Enrolling Area or Director of University Research Institute prior to applying. conditional upon continuing satisfactory performance. Fellows who are promoted during the tenure of their Fellowship will not automatically be granted a continuing appointment but will retain their end-dated appointment until the conclusion of their Fellowship. or have had at least two years of their postdoctoral research experience. If a continuing appointment is awarded to a Fellow while the Fellow is still in receipt of Fellowship funding. Heads of Enrolling Areas reserve the right to support only those applications that would strengthen strategic research capability in their Enrolling Area. the Fellowship and the Fellowship funding will cease and the costs associated with ongoing employment arrangements will be the responsibility of the Enrolling Area. Fellows are encouraged to participate fully into the activities and academic life of the University. Applicants for ECR Fellowships must nominate a mentor associated with the Enrolling Area. to discuss the proposed research program and obtain advice on the research priorities for the Enrolling Area. 1. Applicants are required to contact the relevant Head of Enrolling Area or Director of University Research Institute/Centre in which they propose to undertake the research. This should be done in discussion with the Head of Enrolling Area. the Fellowship funding will continue until the end of the Fellowship award.3 Promotion and Continuing Appointment Curtin Research Fellowships are fixed term appointments. Any additional salary costs shall be met by the Head of Area and are not funded through the Fellowship scheme. and preference will be given to applicants who gained their research doctoral degree.4 Eligibility Applicants must have been awarded a research doctoral degree (equivalent to an Australian PhD degree). Reimbursement of Travel and Removal Expenses If travel and removal expenses have been approved. Demonstrated potential to enhance Curtin’s research performance through success in attracting research income (particularly national competitive research grant funding) and generating high quality publications. Preference will be given to targeted areas of research activity. Demonstrated research excellence as measured by competitive achievement (ECR) OR demonstrated research as measured by internationally competitive achievement (Senior Research Fellows). Faculty sub-panels will undertake the second stage of the selection process. The Fellowships Selection Committee will determine a final short list of applicants in relevant areas for interview.
