4 Palm Secure palm vein identity biometric authentication system: Fig2. After it releases its oxygen to the tissues. the deoxidized hemoglobin in the palm veins absorbs this light. unlike the image seen by the human eye. the deoxidized haemoglobin returns to the heart through the veins. and the vein pattern is extracted by image processing and registered. the region used for authentication is photographed with near-infrared light. The new biometric identity authentication recognizes hand vein patterns.2. iii . Deoxidized haemoglobin absorbs light at a wavelength of about 760 nm in the near-infrared region. they got together to Collaborate in Biometric Authentication to give us this new technology. thereby reducing the reflection rate and causing the veins to appear as a black pattern.6 A new gadget which has just been developed which is called the PalmSecure palm vein authentication system or simple Vein id is the work of Siemens and Fujitsu. In vein authentication based on this principle. The vein pattern of the person being authenticated is then verified against the preregistered pattern.3 Principles of vascular pattern authentication: Haemoglobin in the blood is oxygenated in the lungs and carries oxygen to the tissues of the body through the arteries. Siemens IT Solutions and Services and Fujitsu Limited have just announced that a new business collaboration is going ahead to expand the market for the new device. 2. These two types of haemoglobin have different rates of absorbency. When the palm is illuminated with near infrared light.

5 Access control unit using Palm Secure: The Palm Secure access control unit can be used to control entry and exit for rooms and buildings . and an authentication mechanism that makes impersonation difficult. For both of these applications. This unit integrates the operation and control sections. Fig2. some condominiums and homes have started using this system to enhance security and safety in daily life. The operation section has a vein sensor over which the palm is held. user-friendly operation that requires the user to simply hold a palm over the sensor. The Palm Secure palm vein identity biometric authentication system works in where you place you hand over the device and then the palm is scanned. So with Siemens biometric software called ID Centre and with Fujitsu’s Palm Secure device we know with two major companies holding hands we can see that this device will be a success. Palm Secure units are used to control access to places containing systems or machines that manage personal or other confidential information. Due to increasing concerns about security. and the control section performs authentication processing and issues commands to unlock the door. This new device will work very well in hospitals for hygiene procedures and definitely would work well at ATMs 2. the combination of the following features provides the optimum system: a hygienic and contactless unit ideal for use in public places. the palm of your hand is totally unique to each individual. such as machine rooms in companies and outsourcing centres’ where important customer data is kept. you do not have to make direct contact with the infrared scanner either. The system can be introduced in a simple configuration by connecting it to the controller of an electronic lock.7 : Palm Vein Access Control Unit iii .

However. the units were limited to businesses handling personal information that came under the ―Act for the Protection of Personal Information‖ enforced in April 2005. taking a bath.000 palms from 70. Fujitsu has confirmed that the system has a false acceptance rate of less than 0.2. goinoutside. and waking up. In the early stage of introduction. provided the hand is held over the device three times during registration. existing operating systems and applications can continue to be used. In addition. 2) data about foreigners living in Japan in accordance with the world demographics released by the United Nations. including after drinking alcohol. iii . Because the Palm Secure login unit can also be used for authentication using conventional IDs and passwords.01%. It is also possible to build the unit into an existing application to enhance operability. 3) data taken in various situations in daily life.00008% and a false rejection rate of 0.As with the units for financial solutions. the device’s ability to perform personal authentication was verified using the following: 1) data from people ranging from 5 to 85 years old. use of the units is now expanding to leading-edge businesses that handle confidential information.

However. the illumination and photography components must be placed in different locations. the vessels can easily be seen even when the hand/body is cool. The system configurations of the two methods are also different. a high light transmittance does not significantly affect the level or contrast of the reflected light. Fujitsu employs the reflection method. so the illumination and photography components can be positioned in the same place. This makes it difficult for the system to be embedded into smaller devices such as notebook PCs or cellular phones. where the color can darken in certain areas. the palm vein pattern is the most complex and covers the widest area. The palm also has no significant variations in skin color compared with fingers or the back of the hand. Because the palm has no hair.Completely contactless design minimizes hygiene concerns and psychological resistance. However. Fujitsu has conducted an in-depth study of the necessary optical components to reduce the size of the sensor. this results in a lighter. so light passes through it more easily. the hand can become saturated with light and light can easily pass through the hand. Both types capture the near-infrared light given off by the region used for identification after diffusion through the hand. The reflection method illuminates the palm and photographs the light that is reflected back from the palm. making it more suitable for embedded applications. The reflection method illuminates the palm and takes photographs reflected back from the palm. If the transmittance is too high. iii . less-contrasted image in which it is difficult to see the vessels. because the transmission method photographs light that passes through the hand. When the body cools due to a lowered ambient temperature.ADVANTAGES In addition to the palm.3. it is easier to photograph its vascular pattern. vein authentication can be done using the vascular pattern on the back of the hand or a finger. decreasing the flow of blood through the body. with the reflection method. Conversely. This increases the hand’s light transmittance. the blood vessels (in particular the capillaries) contract. while the transmission method photographs light that passes straight through the hand. An important difference between the reflection method and transmission method is how they respond to changes in the hand’s light transmittance. Therefore. In the transmission method.Advantages of reflection photography:There are two methods of photographing veins: reflection and transmission.

to ensure customer security. the vein patterns are stored on the server of a client-server system. the bank decided to employ Palm Secure because the technology was supported by the largest number of people in the questionnaire. electronic money and palm vein authentication. 2005. credit card. financial institutions have been focusing on biometric authentication together with IC (smart) cards as a way to reinforce the security of personal identification. Currently. In hospitals: iii . it's possible for someone to overhear or see sensitive personal information. In an emergency. a positive identification can be made even if the patient is unconscious. Vein patterns in a palm are considered more unique than a fingerprint. the patient need only provide a birth date and have their palm rescanned to establish a positive identification. is installing scanners that identify patients by the unique vein patterns in their hands. not an image. once a patient's information is collected on the first visit. North Carolina. The scanner uses near-infrared light to map the vein patterns in a patientýs palm. there is no chance an identity could be stolen and illegally reproduced. Incoming patients are asked to place their middle finger between two prongs at the top of the cradle to make sure their palm is properly positioned. which pairs a palm scanning device made by Fujitsu with a durable cradle and software system that the hospital designed itself. On subsequent visits. Carolina HealthCare System is the first known healthcare provider in the US to use the technology. filling out paperwork and waiting for staff to enter the information into a computer before a patient receives care. It can also be time-consuming to check in at a hospital. The digital image is converted into a number that correlates with the patient's medical records.
