March 2012 SHELTER SHORTS is a monthly newsletter intended to keep Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter volunteers and
supporters connected. With everyone’s hectic schedules, we know it is often difficult, if not impossible to attend monthly meetings or to work at all of our fundraisers. Everyone is invited to submit articles for the newsletter. To do so, please call Bev at 608-326-2914 or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org. Monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of every month at the Prairie du Chien City Hall. Meetings begin at 6:00 p.m. Please use the back door. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, April 19. Phoneraisers Please continue to save your old cell phones and ink jet cartridges. Drop them off at Tender Care Animal Hospital, or bring them to the monthly meeting. Thanks to Donna for sending them in. Dog Obedience Classes I have had a couple of people ask about dog classes this spring, so I will more than likely start classes in mid April. Tractor Supply is the best place I have had to hold dog classes – we can work outside if the weather is warm and dry, or inside if the weather does not cooperate. U.S. Bones Please continue ordering cat and dog treats from USBones.com. They donate 25% of each order placed to RABAS. Dr. Donna Higgins’ Wildlife Photo Gallery Dr. Donna Higgins continues to support RABAS through her beautiful wildlife prints on display at her office downtown PdC. The framed and matted prints, sell for $85, of which Donna donates $50 to RABAS. If you are looking for an attractive addition to your home or office, or a unique gift idea, please consider a print from Donna Higgins. Donna’s wildlife prints range from humming birds to bald eagles, deer, egrets and pelicans. The prints can be viewed on line at our website (www.riversandbluffsanimalshelter.org) or at her office.. Kwik Trip Gas Cards – Once again, thank you to those who have purchased the Kwik Trip Cards and have made the commitment to purchase cards from us before purchasing gasoline or any Kwik Trip products. Thanks also to those who are establishing a regular customer base for these cards. This remains our most profitable and steady source of income. Other than the $8.60 shipping fee per order, there is no expense involved such as advertising. Cards are available for sale at Merle Norman Cosmetics (downtown PdC) and also at River City Roller Rink on Friday nights and on Saturdays and Sundays. Cards will be delivered to you with a day’s notice by calling Bev at 326-2914 or Jill at 326-4870 or by replying to this email. If you live out of town and would like to purchase the cards, we will mail them to you upon receipt of your check made payable to RABAS. In the first week of March, Jill deposited $330.00 in Kwik Trip Card sales. Volunteers can be issued up to $300 worth of cards at one time for selling. Money for the cards should be returned to Jill or Bev in a timely manner (2 weeks) for depositing in the checking account. Unsold cards should also be returned within that time frame. Remember, we make 10% on each card sold. Cards come in increments of $25, $50 and $100. Please, help RABAS reach our goal through the purchase of these cards. Please take the time to check out our website – riversandbluffsanimalshelter.org. Information on it changes sometimes daily. This website is awesome!!! Thanks, Randy for constantly updating our website. Therapy Dogs International teams remain active in the community. On Tuesdays Kathy and Digger are at Bluff Haven, Deb and her dogs Jasmine and Sami go to Walter Schmitt Home and Paula and Maggie visit Bluff Haven. Deb, Sami and Jasmine visit Bluff View twice a week for the reading program. Deb, Bev and dogs visit Wyalusing Academy, twice a month. Kelly Fishler also visits Prairie Maison with her cat. Volunteer hours will be collected by Randy P at monthly meetings or you can email your hours to Randy at email@example.com. Mississippi River Cruise to benefit RABAS is in the works for 2012. Randi K. will head up the committee for this event. Randi continues to proceed with the river cruise. Cost of the cruise will be $25 per person. RABAS will supply snacks; participants will provide their own beverage. Date will be a week night in late August I believe. More information to follow at the April meeting. True Value Mother’s Day Bake Sale and Food Stand – will be held on Friday, May 11. We will only be at True Value one day, instead of two as we did last year. Donna will be in charge of this fund raiser. Bev will help her. Volunteers to help at True Value to date are: Donna, Deb, and Bev. If someone would like
to help that day, please let me know. We can always use extra help with set up and take down. We will need volunteers to bake. If you can help or bake, please reply to this email or call Bev at 326-2914. Cruizin’ Fur Critters will be held on Saturday, June 9. We may have at least one sponsor who will financially help us with advertising, prizes, etc. More on Cruizin’ in April. Boys ‘n Toys was held this past Saturday, March 24th at Hoffman Hall. It was not as well attended as I had hoped, but it was better attended than I had feared. There were 11 families present. I think everyone who did come had a good time. I will be the first to say that this event was an extreme amount of work. I believe we made about $100 on Boys ‘n Toys. Thanks to everyone who helped in anyway. Thanks also to our sponsors for their financial support. Halpin Tire and Ken Stoeffler American Family Insurance donated enough to pay for 2 weeks of Courier Press ads and 15 radio ads. AmericInn Lodge and Suites donated a one night stay in a whirlpool suite and Monkeys Tale gave a $10 gift card. This event will be wrapped up as soon as thank you notes are written – hopefully by the end of this week. Princess for the Evening is set for Saturday, May 5. We have Huckleberry’s booked and Bird and Andy Skemp will not charge us for the use of the hall. Brian Cipra will once again be the photographer. Andy Jones – Juice MC- from Boscobel will be the DJ. The cost for Juice MC is $150. Jill has picked up the corsages from Kemble’s Greenhouse and balloons and tiaras will be ordered this week. To date, we have $400 pledged from sponsors. All but 2 have already mailed in their checks. Sponsors to date are: Tender Care Animal Hospital, Dr. Donna A. Higgins, Optometrist, Nelson True Value, Phil’s Auto Body, Paper Moon and Associated Bank. At the March meeting, Julie told us that we may have trouble getting helium for the balloons. She was correct. Jami contacted AirGas as in the past to see if they would donate a tank of helium for the balloons. AirGas told Jami that they cannot get helium at this time and hoped that by next year the situation would be resolved so they could donate to us. I placed a call to Badger Welding from Mineral Point and was told that at this time they can still get it. I reserved one tank which will be delivered to Nelson Hardwoods on the Monday preceding “Princess” and will be picked up from Nelson Hardwoods on the Monday after “Princess”. The cost for one tank of helium which will fill 200 balloons is $45. Badger Welding will donate the helium. Donations will be solicited for cheese trays, a grand prize for the free drawing, a Princess cake and possibly flowers for the tables. We will need help setting up in the afternoon and again some help for the evening. If you would like to help with set up which is fun as we fill 200 balloons with helium, please reply to this email or call me at 326-2914. Time for set up will be decided at the April meeting. If you would like to help with the dance, please let me know also. This year I would like to try letting moms in for the very last 15 minutes of the dance. We had a few moms “sneak” in last year as they just “had” to see their husbands and daughters on this special evening. I feel that most of the work is done for Princess, other than advertising, set up, the event itself and getting a few door prizes Pizza Hut Celebrity Tip Night was a huge success thanks to all of you who supported RABAS by dining at Pizza Hut that evening and leaving very generous tips. We cannot thank you enough for your support and for also spreading the word about Celebrity Tip Night. Thanks to everyone who came to Pizza Hut for Celebrity Tip Night and to the guest servers. We made $688 in tips from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. plus another $20 was received in the mail from a friend of Vicki and Bill Mueller who could not make it on Tuesday evening. Pizza Hut will donate an additional $500. Pasta for Pets will be held on Wednesday, April 18th at Huckleberry’s. Pasta for Pets is an all you can eat pasta, salad and dessert bar. We need volunteers to bake desserts for the dessert bar. Brownies, cakes and bars work well. We will also need a few volunteers to waitress (deliver beverages, etc and bus tables). Pasta for Pets does also include a silent auction. If you can donate anything for the silent auction, bake or volunteer that evening, please reply to this email or call Bev at 326-2914 or Jill at 326-4870. The Food Stand & Bake Sale at Kemble’s has been canceled for this year. A Chicken “Q” by Rooster Andy’s of LaCrosse will be held on Thursday, May 31. It will be held in the parking lot of Rickleff Plumbing/Amerprise Financial Services/Great River Community Medical Clinic on the corner of Marquette Road and Blackhawk Ave. We will need to sell 300 grilled chicken dinners at $8 each. Our cost is $5 each. Chicken dinners include ½ grilled chicken, potato salad, baked beans and a dinner roll. Please promote this fund raiser to your friends, relatives and co-workers. Donna had some excellent news to share at the March meeting. Design Homes will commit to buying 150-170 chicken dinners for their employees. So we are half way to selling the minimum order of 300. Tickets will be sold in advance and we will have them available at the April meeting so our members can purchase them for themselves or to sell. Jill suggested that we do not sell the tickets until May as she is afraid that people who purchase them too early will either forget they have the tickets or will lose them.
Villa Louis Carriage Classic Wine and Cheese Event – Mike and Shelly Rider will donate $500 to RABAS for our help at this event on Friday, September 7. They have already paid us $200 as a down payment for our commitment to do this event. Volunteers are already in place for this fund raiser. Sandy Kittle has resigned from the Board of Directors of RABAS as well as the office of the Secretary. Sandy is having some health issues at this time. Sandy, thank you for your commitment to Rivers & Bluffs Animal Shelter for the last 4.5 years. We hope that you will soon be feeling better. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Please stay in touch and let us know how you are progressing. Vicki Mueller was involved in a head on collision on Ward Road on Saturday, March 10. She was medflighted to Madison and returned home just last week. Her injuries include a broken hip. She will not be able to walk for a number of months. She is receiving therapy at home. Vicki, we wish you a speedy recovery. Please keep Vicki in your thoughts and prayers as well. St. Patricks’s Day Parade was fun. We had a nice representation of RABAS members – Randy & Kathy led the way carrying the banner, Linda delighted children along the route in the Chance costume, Donna, Bethany and her family, Jeanie (a coworker of mine from the park) and I and all of our dogs walked the parade route. It was by far the longest and hottest St. Pat’s Parade that I can remember being in. We were one of the first groups in the parade. When we returned to the island, there were still parade participants waiting to leave the island. We met a lady from Racine who had two Therapy Dog International Certified Therapy Dogs with her. We enjoyed talking to her and she walked with us in the parade. Treasurer’s Report – Treasurer Jill reports that as of March 15, RABAS now has $93,152.31 including $3,126.44 in our checking account and $90,025.87 in 4 different CDs. Jill added $12,000.00 to an existing CD from the checking account. Thanks to Deb and Phil Dwornik for their donation of a large box of envelopes and case of paper. They always seem to know when I am almost out of envelopes and paper. Membership Renewals - Memberships are good for one year from the month the member joined. Jill will send out renewal applications to those whose membership has expired. Please consider renewing your membership as memberships are an important part of our income. There are 5 different levels of membership: $5.00 student; $15 Individual; $25 Family; $50 Sponsor; $100 Patron; $500 Benefactor. Some members choose to donate a fixed amount every month. Thanks to everyone for your financial support. Watch us grow!!
