in order to minimize any chance of disruption. Guinness Nigeria PLC (GNPLC). environmental controls (e. company operations may be impaired or stopped completely. One of the main concerns is business continuity. 6 . A Data Centre must therefore keep high standards for assuring the integrity and functionality of its hosted computer environment.. It is necessary to provide a reliable infrastructure for IT operations. Once of the main responsibilities of a Student’s Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) employee in the Information Systems (IS) department of the Ikeja Brewery of Guinness Nigeria PLC (which I participated in) is to on a daily basis monitor the processes and performance of the Data Centre. air conditioning. It generally includes redundant or backup power supplies. If a system becomes unavailable. such as telecommunications and storage systems. Information security is also a concern. and for this reason a Data Centre has to offer a secure environment which minimizes the chances of a security breach. redundant data communications connections. WHAT THEN IS A DATA CENTRE? A Data Centre is a facility used to house computer systems and associated components. companies rely on their information systems to run their operations. Ikeja Brewery is no exception.g. fire suppression) and security devices.INTRODUCTION Information Technology (IT) operations are a crucial aspect of most organizational operations.

consists of ten (10) uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and a diesel generator that is uniquely and specifically mounted for the Data Centre alone. Most of the equipments are in the form of servers mounted in 19 inch rack cabinets. To prevent single points of failure. Static switches are sometimes used to ensure 7 . the server components at the board level are kept within the manufacturer's (IBM) specified temperature/humidity range. resulting in electronic equipment malfunction. Air conditioning systems help control humidity by cooling the return space air below the dew point. This arrangement is often made to achieve N+1 Redundancy in the systems. the ambient temperature will rise. all elements of the electrical systems. and are placed alongside them. • Backup power. The Data Centre has a recommended temperature range of 20–25 °C (68–75 °F) and humidity range of 40–55% with a maximum dew point of 17°C as optimal for Data Centre conditions. By controlling the air temperature. Some equipment in the Data Centre such as mainframe computers and storage devices are as big as the racks themselves. Servers differ greatly in size but the servers used in the Data Centre are manufactured by IBM. and critical servers are connected to both the "A-side" and "Bside" power feeds.PHYSICAL LAYOUT OF THE DATA CENTRE IN GNPLC BENIN BREWERY The Data Centre occupied one room in the Administrative Block. which is used to control the temperature and humidity in the Data Centre. The electrical power used heats the air in the Data Centre. The physical environment of the Data Centre is rigorously controlled: • Air conditioning. Unless the heat is removed. which are usually placed in single rows forming corridors between them. including backup system. are typically fully duplicated. This allows people access to the front and rear of each cabinet.

These provide a plenum for air to circulate below the floor.5–39. as well as implementation of fire prevention programs in operations. Data cabling is routed through overhead cable trays in the Data Centre. Passive fire protection elements include the installation of fire walls around the Data Centre. • The Data Centre features fire protection systems. as well as providing space for power cabling. interruption of power. Smoke detectors are installed to provide early warning of a developing fire by detecting particles generated by smouldering components prior to the development of flame.4in) void to cater for better and uniform air distribution. as part of the air conditioning system. • The Data Centre has raised flooring made up of 60 cm (2 ft) removable square tiles. and manual fire suppression using hand held fire extinguishers before the fire grows to a large size. Video camera surveillance and permanent security guards are always present since the Data Centre contains sensitive information about the Brewery (Guinness Nigeria PLC. with controls including bollards and mantraps. A fire sprinkler system is also provided to control a full scale fire if it develops. This allows investigation. so a fire can be restricted to a portion of the facility for a limited time in the event of the failure of the active fire protection systems. • Physical access to the site is usually restricted to selected personnel (who are staff of the IS department).instantaneous switchover from one supply to the other in the event of a power failure.

information services are supplied centrally by the use of servers. A Server is a computer that provides services used by other computers i. reports. There are several servers in the Data Centre performing dedicated functions. Some of the servers found in GNPLC Ikeja Brewery.e. their functions and descriptions include:1.SERVERS USED IN GNPLC BENIN BREWERY One of the main equipment domiciled in the Data Centre is a Server. The server is also connected to all the printers over the 9 . The servers are rack-mounted and situated in the Data Centre / Server Room for convenience and to restrict physical access for security. they most times run in headless mode without a monitor or any input device. The File and Print Server usually does not perform any calculations. The servers run for long periods without interruption. That explains the reason why the Data Centre is sometimes referred to as the “Server Room”. The File and Print Server The File and Print Server is a computer attached to the Diageo network and has the primary purpose of providing a location for the shared storage of computer files(such as documents. All the Servers used in GNPLC Benin Brewery are IBM manufactured. The servers' main duty is to provide services to many users (GNPLC employees) over the network and since they are usually accessed over a network. and does not run any programs on behalf of the clients.) that can be accessed by the computers that are attached to the network. It is designed primarily to enable the rapid storage and retrieval of data where the heavy computation is provided by the workstations. etc. databases.

A SAN is an architecture to attach remote computer storage devices (such as disk arrays. tape libraries. and optical jukeboxes) to servers in such a way that the devices appear as locally attached to the operating system. DATA STORAGE IN GNPLC BENIN BREWERY Data storage in the brewery is achieved using SAN. an acronym for Storage Area Network. which also determines the kind of objects that can be stored in the AD.
