WHAT ? : Basic Definition

The Skin and Skeleton (bones) of a ship that enable the ship to performs its function safely throughout it life span. Mainly consists of plates and stiffening members Hollow girders that made of thin plate around its skin, strengthened by combination of longitudinal and transverse stiffening members that contributes to the longitudinal and local strength of the ship.

Bilge Plate. What . Ship Structures & Strength . Deck Plate. Plates to be strengthened (stiffened) by the stiffening members. contributes to overall (longitudinal) and local strength of the ships. Department of Marine Technology.Yahya Samian. UTM .August 2008 . Side Plate. FKM. Examples : Keel plate. Various thickness depending on the plate location and loading.Ship Structures Types PLATING Features : Thin plate that made up the outer skin (envelope) and internal partitions of the ship hull and superstructures. Sheer Plate. Supporting Internal and external load. Floors. Bulkheads. It can be flat or curved depending on the shape of the hull or partitions. Bottom Plate. Superstructures Walls and Floors. Functions : Provide watertight hull and compartments.

I.August 2008 . Attached either longitudinally. Bulkhead stiffeners / Girders. Side longitudinals. SemiCircle. The sections are either built in from the steel mills or prefabricated in the shipyard before welded to the plates. What . etc. Department of Marine Technology. Web / Transverse Frames. Ship Structures & Strength . Inverted L (angle). Its also provide the plates stability. vertically or horizontally to (stiffened) the ship plate. Top Hat. Deck Longitudinals. etc. Deck Beam / Girders. Wall Stiffeners / Girders. Bulb.Yahya Samian.Ship Structures Types SECTIONS Features : Beam type structures that made of from different shape of cross sections such as Tee. Examples : Bottoms Longitudinals. FKM. transversely. UTM . Functions : Strengthening the ship plates to provide longitudinal and local strength.

Examples : Deck Beam Brackets.Yahya Samian. Stanchions BRACKET Features : Triangular like plate with edge flange. OTHERS Other types of structures that may serve specialized function. Department of Marine Technology. UTM .Ship Structures Types SOLID Features : Solid structures that are normally constructed vertically underneath the deck or heavy load. What . constructed underneath a heavy beam or girders. Functions : To provide extra support at the joint where higher bending moment could occur due to long beam. FKM. These structures may have circular or rectangular cross section Functions : To support heavy and concentrated load Examples : Pillars. Ship Structures & Strength . Floor Struts.August 2008 .
