India has a long history of flower cultivation that has blossomed into an important industry for the country. The success of India's flower industry is credited to an increase in the general well-being of the population which has produced more affluent citizens focused on business development. India produces the second largest amount of flowers in the world after China. Primarily, India exports cut flowers used for decorations and bouquets at home and in the workplace.
Roses are the most common of the cut flowers exported from India because of their worldwide appeal. They are used in a variety of ceremonies, but are known more for their symbolism of love or friendship. Over 20 varieties of scented roses grow across the country, including traditional varieties such as the Queen Elizabeth and newer varieties such as the Grand Gala.
Gladiolus are the next most common flowers exported from India. The bulbous perennials with blade-like flowers in a rainbow of colors grow in the temperate, hilly areas of India, but are actually native to most of sub-Saharan Africa. Improved agronomic practices have allowed gladiolus to thrive in many other areas of the country.
In terms of area, not numbers, the marigold is the most widespread flower grown in India, especially local varieties that have been cultivated for generations. African honeygold marigolds, sometimes referred to as American marigolds, and small-flowered French marigolds are also available for export. Marigolds are more often used as fillers in bouquets and arrangements because many people describe their smell as unpleasant.
