Mosque imams are partners in progress
By PRINCE KHALED AL-FAISAL Published: Feb 18, 2012 03:17 Updated: Feb 18, 2012 03:17 The imams of mosques, especially those who deliver Friday sermons, have a great role to play in our ambitious development projects. They should reactivate the role of the mosque in evaluating and correcting our living conditions. The imams should spread the culture of communal responsibility in development projects and motivate people to enhance the positive aspects and get rid of the negative sides. In one of the weekly meetings of the Makkah Council a few days ago, I spoke to the participants who consisted of judges, preachers and imams, about the idea of applying the Kingdom's development strategy in Makkah region. The participants warmly welcomed the idea showing great enthusiasm. The meeting recommended that a workshop on the issue be held under the joint sponsorship of the Governorate and the Department of Islamic Affairs in Makkah. Preparations are currently being made to hold this workshop on March 17 in the holy city. I actually got the idea when I listened to a sermon last Friday delivered by a young mosque imam named Muhammad bin Safar bin Muhammad Al-Harithy. The young imam literally said: “One of the features of a developed society is its members competing to undertake social, cultural and economic initiatives to push the wheel of development and progress. “The awareness about the need to contribute to services for the general interest and to compete with each other to do good is another feature of a civilized and developed society,” the imam added. The young imam said: “The Holy Qur'an has urged people to do good and described those who hasten to do good as benevolent Muslims. The Qur'an made doing good a characteristic of a good Muslim.” He recited the Qura'nic verses that say: “And they hasten (in emulation) in (all) good work. They are in the rank of the righteous... It is these who hasten in every good work, and these who are foremost in them.” He asked the worshippers to “realize their responsibilities toward their homeland and do whatever they could to build an effective civilized society.” “The society that talks much and does little for its members shifting the responsibility on each other and neglecting their own duties will remain static. It will never take any step forward.
