The Success of How I Met Your Mother?
In Turkey “How I Met Your Mother” is a sit-com which is broadcasted in the United States. It is broadcasted from the channel CBS since September 19th, 2005 and it is in its 5th season. The TV series narrates the journey of Ted for finding his spouse and his daily adventures with his best friends during this journey. It is actually the real life of Carter Bays and Craig Thomas (with some exaggeration) who are the creators and producers of the show. This television series became very big in the United States especially because of the sincere dialogs and characters which felt like they are a part of the audiences’ lives. The popularity of the show spread many countries including Turkey. The fans are increasing day by day and it has become one of the most enjoyable shows for the Turkish audience. People are getting more and more attached as they watch more and more episodes. It became so popular so fast. It is clearly seen in one of the most popular websites in Turkey, “sozluk.sourtimes.org”. There are 2115 comments about the show and almost all of them are about how great the show is. “Even though we laugh really hard in every episode, there are some times that it makes us blue. This structure makes the show very significant in our hearts. One of the best shows I’ve ever watched.” (betatron) “It is an incredible sit-com which makes the person want to sip endless shots, which has a great character called Barney and which has a screenwriter who deserves to have a few statues.” (sergeifowler)
When we think about the Turkish audience the reason of the popularity is how related the show is with Turkish people’s lives. Of course everyone does not love it but nobody hates it either, because it is suitable for Turkish people’s norms, beliefs and also their understanding of fun and friendship. For example “Sex and the City” also has many fans from Turkey but the sexuality which is right in the middle of the show disturbs many people because unlike the United States, sexuality in Turkey is more private. The audience likes to watch the characters
which they would like to be or become. That is why being a Ted, Barney, Lily, Robin or Marshall is usually more fulfilling for the Turkish audience rather than being a Samantha which is one of the most popular characters in “Sex and the City”. Of course there are many fans in many countries other than Turkey. Based on the forums from official sites, there are several tendencies which may be introduced in order to argue a general point of view regarding the television series. In order to understand the motivations of the audience through their point of concern regarding the episodes needs to be explored. According to the forums the audience is watching television series in order to spend good time as well as the audience finds the TV show as realistic and they are making comparisons with their own daily life. For instance according to one audience; “But I just finished Something Borrowed, and for me, these two episodes make the show a classic. It's not just that they're incredibly funny -- it's that I think these two episodes are some of the sweetest things to ever have been aired on TV. I mean, this episode features an excellent use of Romantic Ted (suggesting LAME have the wedding they've always wanted), LAME being LAME, and two of the least sentimental characters ever breaking down in tears. And it works really well, because these characters don't come off as cheesy fakes living in sitcom world -it feels real. It's easy for a sitcom to trawl the standard territory of clichés, but it's hard for a sitcom to handle dramatic depths like this, which is the genius of this show.” (televisionwithoutpity.com). The most important motivation of the audience is related with the reality of the show. Furthermore, due to the reasons the show is based on the daily life of the characters, audience started to be familiar with the adventures of them. According to the audience responses, the pleasures of the audience are generally related with the happiness of the characters. Furthermore, audience wants to identify certain behaviors with certain characters
from the show. So when the audience faces with a typical act of a character, they feel pleasure and they are motivated. The manipulations of the show may be related with the mystery of Ted’s love of his life because audience is expecting to learn who she is and they could not learn up to the end. So the majority of the audience is manipulated with this fact. Also unexpected facts keep up audience’s attention. For example, there is a huge number of fans of the “womanizer” character Barney. Robin and Barney’s relationship was found so odd and interesting from the viewers. The Barney fans who love to see Barney single and as Casanova couldn’t picture him entering into a long term commitment because it is against his characteristic qualities. Seeing Barney romantic was so unusual for them so they keep on watching to see how he handles everything and how he kept his own personality. To conclude, according to the audience responses the main fact that How Met Your Mother is accepted by the audience is because it is a realistic sitcom so it is easy for them to “become them” as they watch it. The sincere feeling which the show is giving is the most important fact of its “acceptance”. If it had been lost the audience would easily drift away. As long as it keeps this sincerity alive, it does not seem that it will lose its popularity.
