PBIO 185 Survey of Biochemistry explores biological processes at the molecular level.

The course will focus on answering the following questions: What is the basic structure of a cell and why is this structure important? What are the four types of biomolecules, how do they interact, and how do their structures relate to their roles in a cell? Why are enzymes important for carrying out the chemical reactions that occur in a cell and what roles to enzymes play in regulating biological reactions? Where does the energy required to carry out cellular processes come from, how is it stored, and how is the storage and use of energy controlled? How is biological information stored, maintained, and processed? Investigating the answers to these questions will provide a better understanding and appreciation for the complex chemical reactions that are the fundamental basis for life. Prerequisite: CHEM 042 or acceptable coursework in organic chemistry.

Course Goals The three main goals for this course are: 1) Examine the structures and functions of the molecules responsible for carrying out biological processes. 2) Develop an understanding of the chemical and energetic processes necessary for life, their relationships, and their regulation. 3) Gain insight into the processing of biological information stored within every cell.

Learning Objectives By the end of the course, you should be able to: 1) Compare and contrast the four types of biological molecules in terms of both structure and their functions in a cell. 2) Understand factors that affect enzymatic reactions, and explain how different types of enzymes and inhibitors function. 3) Describe the relationships between metabolic pathways and energy in a cell, and explain how these pathways are coordinately regulated in a cell. 4) Explain the central dogma and understand how genetic information is maintained, duplicated, and expressed, and how this expression is controlled. 5) Apply your knowledge of biochemistry to better understand diseases and disorders.
