HAPPY OPENING DAY: Opening Day for the Padres is set for tomorrow, April 5 with a 4:05 p.m. game against the Los Angeles Dodgers… the game is sold out…Opening Day pregame ceremonies are scheduled to begin at approximately 3:30 p.m…Padres manager Bud Black announced that RHP Edinson Volquez is the Opening Day starter. HURLERS: In addition to Edison Volquez, Padres manager Bud Black announced that LHP Cory Luebke, RHP Dustin Moseley and LHP Clayton Richard will make out the Padres’ starting rotation this weekend against Los Angeles…after an off day Monday, the Padres play three games vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks…the rotation beyond Sunday has not been announced. ABOUT LAST NIGHT: LHP Clayton Richard, in his final start before the regular season, pitched 6.0 innings of 3-hit, shutout baseball to lead San Diego to a 2-1 win at Petco Park over the Kansas City Royals… Chase Headley and Jesus Guzman hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning…the Padres’ bullpen of RHP Luke Gregerson, LHP Joe Thatcher, RHP Andrew Cashner and RHP Huston Street combined for 3.0 innings, allowing two hits and one run. TODAY’S STARTER: Missouri State product Matt Palmer starts today for San Diego…he attended Cauthersville (Mo.) RUN SUPPORT: The Padres rank tied for first in the Majors in runs scored at 195…their 41 home runs this Spring rank second in the Bigs.
