Uh« Weapons of our Warfare
A few years ago a man was showing Brother Burris his fine bridle, saddle, and spurs. He was telling him how wonderful they were. "Where is your horse?" asked Brother Burris. "Oh, I rode him to death", the man replied. What do you need with a bridle, if the horse is dead? What does it help to brag about your spurs and your saddle if you have ridden the horse to death? Why keep spurring a dead horse? The bridle is used to guide and control the horse when the horse is alive. The spurs help regulate the horse before he dies. You never put a saddle on a horse that is dead. A few horses are not yet dead, but they are nearly dead. You can count every rib in them. They look like they have gone through a hard Arkansas winter, without any corn, barely living an a little grass. They are about to' fall to' staves. Their hair is long and shaggy. Yet some people will put a good saddle on them, jump on them, and spur them as hard as they can. They unmercifully ride them until they ride them to' death. They should be feeding them same good oats and corn. They should stop jerking the bits and burying the spurs in their ribs, at least until they gain same strength! After some of the poor horses die and begin to putrify t here are a few puny people who will still jerk their bits and bury their spurs into -the dead hair. They try to farce the dead horse to keep going! These people have nothing to ride, but they keep using the bridle, saddle and spurs. They try to regulate the dead horse. Why brag about the regulator when you have nothing to regulate?

PAUL'S REGULATOR Paul had a wonderful church. It was healthy. The people came behind in no gift. They obeyed the Lord. When they did the unsaved fell down under conviction and reported that God was in them of a truth, because the secret of their heart was made manifest. His church was very Spiritual. It was alive, thriving, and progressive. When they came together, everyone of them had a gift. Since Paul's church was so large, strong and healthy; since it was able to prance along; since it was able bodied; since it was well fed; since it was anxious to get gone and lunge ahead, then he gave the people a regulator in the fourteenth chapter of First Corinthians. He did not condemn the usage of gifts; he only regulated them. It is perfectly alright for you to use this regulator today if you have a strong, healthy, Holy Ghost-filled, prosperous, growing church which presses forward in the anointing of the Holy Spirit. If your church does not have the Holy Ghost Baptism; if it does not have the gifts of the Spirit manifested in it; then you do not need to regulate something which you do not have! I would rather think you need something to regulate before you preach a sermon to your people from First Corinthians fourteen. Maybe you should first preach First Corinthians twelve to your people. I think, if your church has been nearly spurred to death that you should not jump on it and jerk the bits and spur it until you finish killing it! It is better to encourage it and feed it instead of whipping and kicking it until it lands in the boneyard with the others that have been killed by tradition and the learning of the carnal minds.

A CONTROVERSIAL CHAPTER First Corinthians fourteen is the most controversial chapter of Corinthians; of the Christian Church, or of this century. For this reason I am sure that if we take it verse by verse we will break down some tradition that has made the Word of God of none effect in the lives of many well meaning people. You can never learn until you unlearn some things and exchange tradition for truth. If you will be patient with me, and go over every verse, I am sure that you will never be the same again. Don't begin with a critical spirit, but with a Spirit of prayer that God will open our understanding. open the Scrip: ures, and open our eyes that we may behold great aud mighty things out of His law. A natural mind can't understand the things of the Spirit, but he that doeth His will shall know of the doctrine. The Holy Spirit will teach us all things and guide us into all truth; so help me Lord. VERSE I "Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy." The first thing we must remember is this: Paul wrote First Corinthians in one letter. Man divided it into chapters and verses for convenience. So chapter fourteen is really not separated from chapter thirteen. The last verse of chapter thirteen says, "and now abideth faith, hope and charity and the greatest of these is charity." There are two things I want to stress about verse thirteen in chapter thirteen. It did not say, " and now abideth ONLY faith. hope and charity" as some people have tried to make it mean. Next, just because charity is last on the list does not make it the least; rather it is the greatest. But some folk try to say just because tongues are last on the list in chapter twelve it is the least of the gifts. That does not prove anything; something had to be last on the list. Certain people have tried to make verse one of chapter fourteen mean this: "Follow after charity and despise spiritual gifts." But they have not succeeded in making everyone believe that. Notice it is just as much a command to desire spiritual gifts as to follow after charity. Both commands are in that first verse. 3

a man out of the church for one thing, turn the rest of them out for breaking the other commandment. The Bible does not teach charity without gifts, but charity with gifts. Another thing is this: Charity is not some institute like the Red Cross, Community Chest, or some benevolent fund. In the Bible charity is the love of God. The love of God is shed abroad in your heart by the Holy Ghost (Rom. 5 :5). If you love the Lord He will give you the Holy Ghost, who gives all the gifts (John 14 :15-16). Faith works by love (Gal. 1 :23). Faith is one of the spiritual gifts set in the church (I Cor. 12). Now abideth faith (I Cor. 13 :13). Do you desire spiritual gifts? Or do you despise spiritual gifts? Prophecy is one of the spiritual gifts (I Cor. 12). God has set this gift in the church. Prophecy will not pass away before the great tribulations (Rev. 11 :3). Despise not prophesying (I Thes. 5 :20). God commands us to do three things in this verse: follow after charity, desire spiritual gifts (or set your heart on spiritual gifts) and desire to prophesy. If we say that we know Him and do not keep His commandments we are a liar (I John 2 :4). All liars will have their part in the lake (Rev. 21 :8). VERSE 2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries." So the man who said that unknown tongues are only other languages is wrong. God is right after all. Unknown tongues are mysteries in the Spirit. Not a man on the earth can understand them. The man who told you that Paul was an educated man, who knew fourteen different languages, and his unknown tongues were other languages which he learned, was mistaken. Had he talked in unknown languages no man could understand. An unknown tongue is a heavenly language, which no one, not even the devil can listen in on. We have heard all kinds of fearful tales, told by fighters of God's power, who claim that they have 4

If you turn

heard of people who spoke in unknown tongues who were cursing, had the devil talking through them, or who were drunk or devil-possessed. We won't take time to go into all of that, and try to prove it wrong; the Word of God forever stands to prove it wrong. After all the tales are told, which have been handed down from generation to generation, the Word of God still says that anytime anyone speaks in an unknown tongue he is speaking to God and speaking in the Spirit. The Word will stand when the scoffers are dead. The anvil will remain after the hammers are worn out. It mav be possible for some old devil possessed man, out in the mud hole, a drunken sot, to murmur and jabber. But that is not an unknown tongue. Had there never been a genuine dollar there would never have been a counterfeit. A counterfeit only proves the genuine. The Bible does not say that anyone ever cursed Jesus as they spoke in an unknown tongue. If anyone else ever said that, he told a lie, for the Bible says that unknown tong-ues are not understood by man. I will acknowledge that the unknown tongues which Paul speaks of in this chapter were different to the other tongues spoken in the upper room by the hundred and twenty people. which were other languages. Even the tongues in the upper room were spoken as God gave the utterance. God would never utter anything wrong or obscene. The Scripture settles it when it says that they were speaking the wonderful works of God (Acts 2:11). That could never be wrong, and should be welcomed at anytime. It is not the unknown tongue, or other tongues that raises the devil all over town and crittcizes God's people. It is the tongue you can understand. Some well-trained man pointed out that the word "unknown" in this verse is italicized, which means that it was not in the Greek. There may not haye been a Greek word for the unknown, but the rest of the verse plainly says, in the most simple words, in your own language, -that these tongues are unknown. Read it. "No man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries." This 'well trained man' was trained to fight the power of God. 5

If I wanted to know something about money I would not go to a ditch-digger. If I wanted to know medicine I certainly would not go to a dairyman. If you want to know about tongues don't ask a man who never spoke with tongues. Go to some man who has the experience. Don't ask the man who knows nothing about tongues, who says there is not such a thing, all because he never had the experience. One translation says the one who speaketh with unknown tongues is speaking "spiritual secrets." Brother, the devil or any of his gang cannot listen in on your conversation with God if you are speaking spiritual secrets. The sabotage does not have a chance. The man without the Holy Ghost does not have the teacher (John 14 :26). The man without the Holy Ghost does not have the author of the Bible that moved on the men of God to write the Bible (I Peter 1 :21). The man who, has the author as his teacher can understand. He that deeth his will shall know of the doctrine, (John 7:17). If you were courting your girl-friend whom you were engaged to, and someone would break into your mail, they would not understand your secrets, especially if it were written in a code language. A man without the Holy Ghost who tries to understand Paul's letter written to the church is breaking into someone else's mail. This letter is anointed by the Holy Ghost, written by a Holy Ghost man to a group of Holy Ghost people.

VERSE 3 "But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort." The gift of prophecy is just as much a spiritual gift as the gift of tongues. A man that preaches a sermon, as we hear sermons, is not prophesying. Prophecy is a supernatural utterance, just as tongues, except it is in our own language. Preaching, as we know preaching is a ministerial gift while prophesying is a spiritual gift. Prophecy is not to "skin" people but to edify them. Prophecy comforts, encourages, builds, edifies, instructs, consoles, and inspires.

VERSE 4 "He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifies himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church." Before Paul could edify the church he first edified himself. How could he edify the church if he did not first edify himself? Before he went to church and saw people delivered he first edified himself by praying in tongues. (I Cor. 14 :15, 18-19) Praying in tongues built up his most holy faith. (1 Cor. 14 :4, Jude 20) You are commanded to do the same. We are to earnestly contend for the faith once delivered to the saints. When Paul did not know what to pray for he let the Holy Ghost make intercession through him which he could not utter, which brought the will of God to pass in his life, and made everything work together for good. (Rom. 8 :26-28) Paul prayed in the Spirit, in a way that people could not understand him. (I Cor. 14 :15-16) This edified himself as he talked to God in a heavenly language which the devil could not listen in on. Paul did a lot of things when he went to church. He saw people healed, saved, filled with the Holy Ghost. He preached all night and saw a man raised from the dead. All this edified the church. How did he edify the church? He first edified himself by praying in an unknown tongue BEFORE HE went to church (verses 14, 18, 19). Who wouldn't want to be edified? Who would not want to be built up? People take medicine to build up their nerves, but if you want your nerves built just pray in tongues for an hour or so. This is the rest wherewith He makes the weary to rest. This will prevent a nervous breakdown or a mental breakdown. (lsa. 28 :12) A man with the Holy Ghost has a mind seven times better than the average mind. Science says that the average man forgets six-sevenths of what he learns. Jesus says that the Holy Ghost will bring to your rememberance all things. Each school teacher should have the Holy Ghost before she begins to teach. Every school child should have the Holy Ghost before he starts to school!

VERS.E 5 "I would that YE ALL speak with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying." First, sound it out loud and long: Paul said that he would that we all speak with tongues. Why? Because it builds up our faith and sets the weary at rest! Someone asked, "Do all speak in tongues?" The answer is No, but ye should. Speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost Paul said that he would that YOU speak with tongues. All Scripture is given by inspiration and is profitable for doctrine, instruction and reproof, that the man of God may be perfected. If you happen to be one of those people who have been confused; if someone has told you that God does not want you to speak with tongues; if you have received the Holy Ghost and the devil, or somebody, has told you that you must not continue to speak with tongues, I want you to get this forever settled in your mind and heart right now: The will of God is that· everyone speaks with tongues; Twenty-five years ago in an old tabernacle, up in the mountains, near a little sawmill village, at Athens, Arkansas, we had a Holy Ghost Revival. People threatened to come take my sister and me out of the tabernacle for speaking in tongues and praising the Lord. The people of that community said if Clay Tipton and Dee Faulkner would receive the Holy Ghost and speak with tongues they would believe in it. About two dozen of us men were down in the woods having a grove-meeting just before a night service. Service had already started. About nine o'clock Clay Tipton and Dee Faulkner received the Baptism of the Holy Ghost .. They had both been quiet men, but they were not quiet now! They beat me to the tabernacle. When I arrived all the people were shouting. Clay Tipton was so happy that he lost his false teeth speaking with tongues. Every day and every night that "dry" Dee Faulkner would pray in tongues. He built up his most holy faith. Many souls were saved, filled and healed as he prayed the prayer of faith. The country was stirred. Space 8

will not permit me to tell you what a great meeting we had. A year later I went back to that country. In a grove meeting I noticed that Dee Faulkner was dryas a shuck! I went to him and asked him if he still spoke in tongues. He said that he did not know that everyone should speak with tongues. I read him what Paul said, "I would that ye all speak with tongues." Other people had told him the opposite. He finally decided to believe the Word of GDd rather than the fighters. Then year after year when I saw him he was still going strong, fighting the devil and speaking with tongues! It is impossible to know how many souls he won, not to speak of keeping the victory in his own soul. On the day of Pentecost they ALL spoke with tongues. At the household of Cornelius they ALL spoke with .tongues. (Acts 10) Down at Ephesus they ALL spoke with tongues. (Acts 19) Everywhere that it mentions tongues they ALL spoke with tongues as they received the Holy Ghost. We can't find anywhere in the entire Bible where people received the Holy Ghost and only part of them spoke with tongues. After people had received the Holy Ghost Paul told them to continue to speak with tongues. He wanted them ALL to speak with tongues! (verse 5) Speaking of the gift of "divers kinds of tongues," Paul asked, "Do all speak with tongues?" (I Cor. 12) But speaking of just speaking or praying in tongues Paul said, "I would that ye all speak with tongues." Just as you can be healed without having the gift of healing so you can speak with tongues without having the gift of divers kinds of tongues. Everyone who speaks in a tongue does not have the gift of speaking in divers kinds of tongues. You may have faith without having the gift of faith. God may answer your prayer sometimes and work a miracle without giving you the gift of miracles. Personally I don't ~ee why a man should resent tongues if it is a heavenly language. You are no better than Mary the Mother of Jesus, Peter, James, John, Thomas, Philip. The reason most people don't speak with tongues is they just don't want to. A preacher in Fort Worth came to me and told me he wanted the gift of healing. 9

"How about tongues?" I asked. He said he did not want tongues. I told him he could not have anything unless he was willing to accept anything God had for him. I left him flat of his back under the power asking God to make him willing not to despise spiritual gifts. VERSE 5B Paul would rather you prophesy than to speak with tongues unless you interpret what you are saying. He said that you were greater if you prophesied than if you only speak with tongues. There is one exception. If you interpret, that is the same as prophecy. Then you are edifying the church just as if you were prophesying. Paul had reference to speaking to people in tongues, and was not talking about praying in tongues, singing in tongues, or praising God in tongues in this verse. There is no law against praying, singing, or praising in tongues which builds up YOU!' most holy faith. But when it comes to teaching people in tongues, it is better to prophesy than to speak with tongues, unless you interpret what you are saying. I don't know anyone who tries to teach people in tongues without interpreting what they are saying. We don't try to do that. Sometimes we are accused of it, but who is to judge whether the speaking with tongues is a praise or a message to people? I'm sure that a man who has never spoken in tongues, one who rebels against the Spirit of God, someone who hates the second chapter of Acts; I'm sure that he cannot tell us when it is a message or a prayer, or when we are out of order. God says that he that is Spiritual judges (I Cor. 2 :15), not someone who stays at home and fights! After you speak with tongues and see that there is no one there to interpret the message, it would be better to prophesy if you are addressing people. Of course, if you are praying in tongues, the more the better, just so you do not disturb the services. It builds up your most holy faith. There comes a time when everyone is praising the Lord in tongues as the disciples were in the Upper Room. There is no law against that. But if you are teaching people, do as Peter did. Speak in your language if there is no interpreter. 10

CHAPTERS 6 TO 11 All these six verses have one thought: they were all written together: "Now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? "~d even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? "For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? "So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken'? For ye shall speak into the air. "There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. "Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me." The key phrase to these sentences this: "Brethren, if I come unto you speaking to you in tongues." Paul is not talking about praying in tongues, which he <lid as much as any of the rest of them (verses 15 and 18), which builds up your faith in the Lord. He was not talking about singing in tongues, praising the Lord in tongues, which he admitted that he practiced. He was not talking about talking to people in tongues if they are interpreted, which would be equal to prophecy and would edify the church (verse 5). In these six verses he is only talking about teaching or instructing people in tongues without an interpreter. He is speaking about addressing people in tongues when the words are not interpreted. We do not do that. I know of no one else that does it. In short, Paul is telling them if they are speaking to people in tongues be sure that the message is interpreted, or when they give out a message and discover that there is no interpreter present, then they must address God in tongues and not instruct people, otherwise the people would not know the meaning of the voice. Even here there is an exception: In verse 6 we see if there is no interpreter you may address people in tongues, and then tell them the mind of the Spirit

is

11

by revelation, by a word of knowledge, or by prophecy, or by doctrine. If you want the inspiration of the Spirit you can explain to the people what God wants. If it is revealed to you then you may stand and explain to the. pe?ple. You may speak God's mind in prophecy, which IS equal to a message in tongues plus interpretation (verse 5). Or I have seen people read the Bible or quote Scripture, even after service was over and instruct the people concerning the mind of the Spirlt. By all means Paul makes it clear that if I come to you speaking to you in tongues the words should be understood. But remember, if the message is interpreted it can have as. much effect as the unknown language which was written on the wall of the King's palace that brought judgment down on the head of Belshazzar when he rejected it! The people were responsible when the man of God interpreted, even though they could not understand it! Recently I was told of two men who could speak French, and decided to try to fool a preacher who did not know French. One of them quoted John 3 :16 in French: The preacher arose to his feet and said, "Your days are numbered. You are weighed in the balance and found wanting." The m~n went to the preacher and told him they pro.ved him wrong, that he gave the wrong interpre~ab~n. The man' told them that God put those words III hIS mouth. In three days both of those men dropped de~d. The man. was not interpreting what the fighters said at all, as It was not from God. The man gave a prophecy by the Spirit, which came to pass. It does not pay to criticize God's doing. How does a beerguzzler, or a carnal man know when the tongues are a prayer or a praise? The above six verses do not have any reference to prayer or praise in tongues. They re~ulate the act of instructing people in tongues. You don t need the regulator if you have nothing to regulate. VERSE 12 . "Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church."

The words "even so" shows that this verse is summing up the six verses above. In short, he is saying for them to edify the church by interpreting their messages in tongues which address people. Tongues with interpretation edifies the church. But remember that you will do little good in edifying the church after you arrive if you do not first get edified yourself before you go to church. You edify yourself by praying in tongues (verse 4). Most of it should be before you go to church. Paul paid those Christians a compliment when he said they were zealous of spiritual gifts. He commended them for it. He told them to use the gifts to edify and to build up. This we cannot say about everybody. Some are not zealous of spiritual gifts; rather they are jealous of them and seek to tear down instead of building up. They don't edify. They "billify" and crucify!
I

VERSE 13 "Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret." Here is a kind of climax to the above seven verses. Therefore, if your people are continually giving out messages and speaking to people in tongues, don't make them stop doing it, but it is the will of God to give the interpretation. That is the way to excel. That is the way to edify. That is the way to build up instead of tearing down. God will never ask you to pray for something and then refuse to give you the thing He told you to pray for. He is inviting everyone who gives a message in tongues to receive the interpretation. There is the solution! God gives the solution to every problem. After you begin to receive interpretations do not be afraid to give out a message in tongues. It helps the church (verse 5). Then you will not have any problem found in the above verses. In this way the above verses will not apply to your church. In this way you will not need to sit back an(l wonder if there is an interpreter before you give a message in tongues, for if no one else interprets, you may. Recently a lady in Tulsa came to me after church and asked if there was something wrong with her. She said I did not interpret her message and she won13

12

dered if there was something wrong. She must have overlooked this verse that tells her that it is the will of God for her to interpret her own message if no one else does. So she had no one to blame but herself. VERSE 14 "For if I pray in an unknown tongue; my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful." We have reminded you before that when you speak with tongues you edify yourself (verse 4). You build up yourself in the Lord. You must edify yourself before you may edify the church. To edify means to build up. The Word of God says that you build up your most holy faith when you pray in the Holy Ghost. How does it help you to pray in tongues if your understanding is unfruitful? Sometimes it is best that your understanding is unfruitful. Had my understanding been fruitful one night, as I prayed in tongues, I ~o.uld have been too much afraid to pray. The Holy Spirit prayed through me for hours. Then I discovered that a gang-fight was in the road near the house while I was praying. One man was dead. Who knows how m~n! :vould have been killed had I not let the Holy Spirit intercede through me that night! Who knows that man did not lay there and pray through to salvation before he died! Had my mother's understanding been fruitful, had she known what she was praying for, she would have bee~ too full of fear to pray. The Holy Spirit was intercedmg through her while the bullets were flying ove~ my head. My boy friend died in the electric chair I was unconscious for about eight hours at a time as I was under the influence of drink. Nevertheless my mother was faithful and let the Holy Spirit pray through her for me. . The Holy Spirit prayed through me for hours one night, After I prayed through and received the answer from God, God showed me in a vision what I had prayed f?r. '!v!-y b.rot~er in the Marines was saved for the first time III hIS hfe. Nine-tenths of his buddies were killed He came. safely through the war. I could relate dozen~ of such mstances when souls were saved. Even Paul said that he did not know what he should pray for, but he let the Holy Ghost pray through him 14

with groanings that he could not utter. He said that the Holy Ghost made intercession through him according to the will of God; then he knew that all things were working together for good. That is the only time we know that all things work for good. The Holy Ghost never prays through us contrary to God's will. But if we pray in our own words and in our own understanding we may pray contrary to God's will and then everything would not work together for good. (Rom. 8 :26-29) Moffatt says this:' "My spirit prayeth but my mind is of no use to anyone." So you can very well see that it is fine for your spirit to pray. This is when you receive the answer to your prayer, when your spirit prays. But when we are praying in our own words, and in our own understanding, many times we speak words with our mouth, but our spirit may not be praying. What Paul is interested in here is people praying in public, since he is talking about other people not understanding us. The next verses will show this: It is a wonderful thing when we are at home, or somewhere out of the church, to pray in tongues, since it builds our faith and edifies ourselves; since we must first be edified before we can edify the church. But when we are in church, when we are leading in prayer, or dismissing in prayer, it is well for us to pray in a language that the public can understand. Of course, if the prayer is interpreted then the people will receive edification. VERSES 15 AND 16 "W1-Jat is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also." If Paul did both I will also. You may, too . This verse is a continuation of the thought in the preceding verse. Paul said he would pray in tongues and also pray so people could understand him. Out of the church he spoke in tongues more than all the members of that large church (verse 18), but in the church he prayed so people could understand him. He did the same thing with singing. While making tents he sang in unknown tongues. While leading singing in service he would sing so the people could under15

stand him. Singing in unknown tongues would edify him, but it would not edify the people unless it was interpreted. I have heard songs in tongues interpreted at church, which edified the church, and was all right. I have seen commercial, professional singers, at singing conventions, with the smell of tobacco. and beer on their breath, reeling and walling their eyes, say, "Let's sing with the spirit and with the understanding also." They did not stop to think that when you sing with the Spirit you sing in unknown tongues. VERSE 17 "For thou verily giveth thanks well, but the other is not edified." This proves what has been said concerning the above verses. Nowhere in this chapter is Paul putting any ban on praising God in tongues or singing in tongues, or praying in tongues at home, or out of the church. Even if Y9U do so at church you do well except you do not edify the people you are bringing the message of song to unless you speak in their language or interpret what you are saying. So, that settles it, when you praise God in tongues you give thanks WELL. When you pray in tongues your spirit prayeth WELL. When you sing in tongues you sing WELL. Let's all say with Paul, "We will sing in tongues and sing in our own language. We will pray in tongues and pray in our own language also. We will praise God in tongues and also praise Him in our own language." Will you say that? VERSES 18 AND 19 "I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: "Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue." One man said, "Paul is my preacher. He said he had rather speak five words in his own understanding than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue." To say that is to leave out two parts of what Paul said ill order to make it mean opposite to what Paul said.

9 u

That man deliberately did violence to the Word of God and is not worthy to teach the Holy Scriptures. That is not the way Paul said it. Paul was not trying to get the people to not speak with tongues. Rather he was encouraging them to use tongues. He was telling them how to use tongues. If I would give you a new car and come show you how to drive it, it would be my will for you to drive that car. Just because I showed you how to use the brake would not prove that I did not want you to operate the car. Rather it would show that I wanted you to keep the car and drive it. But the brake would do you no good without the car. The most encouragement I received to speak with tongues is when I see that Paul said that he spoke with tongues more than them all. If we have the New Testament experience we will have the New Testament results. Paul was not ashamed that he spoke in tongues. He boldly proclaimed that he thanked his God that he did speak with tongues! If Paul was not too good to speak with tongues, are you? If it did not embarrass Paul to speak with tongues should you stand back because of public opinion? Paul did most of his talking in tongues out of the church, while he was at work, or alone praying, for he followed the sentence "I thank my God that I speak with tongues more than ye all" with this: "Yet in the church ... " The thought was not finished. It all belongs together. Put this down in your beok. The nineteenth verse is not talking about praying, praising, or singing in tongues, which builds you up in the faith. The more the better. This verse is not talking about teaching people in tongues with an interpreter, that edifies the church and builds it up (verse 5). This verse is only talking about teaching people in tongues without an interpreter. I know of no one today who does that. But the fighters leave out the main part of the verse which says, "that by my voice I might teach others" and purposely try to get people to think Paul is speaking about any tongues, whether it is instructing people, praying, or singing. Many times, praying in tongues will do more good 17

16

in five words in a heavenly language than ten thousand words in your own language. To sum it up, T will say so far in the above nineteen verses there is not a verse an eighth of an inch long that discourages, limits, or puts a ban on praying in tongues, singing in tongues, praising God in tongues, or speaking to people in tongues with an interpreter. Again I want to say to the man who said that Paul's tongues were other languages which he learned, Paul makes it very plain again here, if he spoke in tongues it would not be with his own understanding. VERSE 20 "Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding as men." When it comes to forgiving each other, when you have a grudge, when you have an ill will or want to do something for spite, when you feel like you want to injure someone, then you must be as simple as a little child. A little child can be in a good humor and forgive and forget in five minutes. But when it comes to understanding the things of God you must be as men. You cannot understand the things of God unless you have the teacher which is the Holy Ghost. Carnal minds can't understand the things of the Spirit anymore than your old sow would understand things in vour living room if you brought her into your house. (Paul says in this same letter that a natural mind can't understand the things of the Spirit, 2:15.) A Spiritual mind can understand very well what Paul teaches in verse 19, but a natural man twists it around and tries to make it mean other things because he has never had that experience. Peter says that some men speak evil of the things they understand not. (2 Peter 2: 12) VERSE 21 "In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that wiIJ they not hear me, saith the Lord." In Isaiah 28, God says that only the ones who were saved. could understand these things. The rest will fall backward, be broken, snared and taken. He says tongues is the rest with which He causes the weary

to rest. Paul says that He was speaking about tongues. (Isa. 28 :11-12) Joel spoke about the Pentecostal experience. Peter said that was what he was speaking of. (Joel 2; Acts 2 :15-20) Habakkuk brought a message direct from the Lord which said, "for I will work a work in your days. which you will not believe, though it be told you." (Hab. 1:5) Paul said that he was speaking of the HoI." Ghost being poured out in this age, "Behold ye desp isers, and wonder, anel perish: for I will work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe. though a man declare it unto you." In fact all the prophets spoke of this Holy Ghost experience. (Acts 3:24) Yet the carnal minds cannot understand it. just as the educated Pharisees were confused when the disciples in the Upper Room began to speak a supernatural language! Jesus says that tongues are one of the signs that follows the believer. You say that He did not mean unknown tong-ues. If you will 1001< in the Book of Arb; you will see that tongues are one of the signs that followed. If you do not hear this message vou are fulfilling prophecy. VERSE 22 "Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to (hC'1l1 that believe. but to them that believe nol.: but nronhcsving serveth not for them that believe not. but for them that believe." As I said, and as Jesus said (Mark 16 :17), tongues are one of the signs to follow al: believers, Tongues which are interpreted will edify t he church and the same as prophecy (verse 5), but tongues which are not interpreted are f'or a sign to the unbeliever .. Just ~IS happened at Pentecost in the Uppe r Room, when sinners hear people praising God in tongues they are pricked in their hearts. Thev ask. "What me'aneth this." If they will listen to the Spirit's pleading they will also cry out, "What must we do to be saved?" They will turn to God as the people at Pentecost. Tongues caused the three thousand to ask, "What meaneth this?" Peter said the same thing that happened in the Upper Room would take place just before the sun is

18

19

turned to darkness, just before the Lord comes. (Acts 2 :15-20) Five signs were to take place just before the moon turns to blood. Tongues are one of them. Tongues are a sign of judgment just as the unknown language written on the wall of the king's palace was a sign of judgment. They were slain the same night who rejected the message which was interpreted by a man of God. When you hear people praising God in tongues today you must realize that it is a sign that the sun 1::; soon to turn to darkness and the Lord will appear, coming for His own! Paul repeats here that prophecy edifies the church. It comforts and exhorts. If a man is already saved he really does not need a sign in order to believe. VERSES 23 TO 25 the whole church be come together into one place. and all speak with tongues. and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ve are mad?" "But if all prophesy, and theRe come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: "And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth." That would be as it were in the Upper Room. The unbelievers came in and said that they were mad, or drunk. Still it was a sign to them. Then Peter arose and spoke to them in the language that they could understand. They were convinced. They were converted. The secrets of their hearts were made manifest. They were pricked in their hearts. Peter told them they killed the prince of Life. They were converted. Jesus' prayer was answered, "Forgive them, for they know not what they do." When they needed a sign they heard tongues. When they needed to be convinced or judged they heard prophecy.
"If therefore

a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done to edifying." If everyone will be led by the Lord in using these gifts the secrets of the sinner's heart will be revealed. The; will fall down and report that God is in them of a truth. Paul had a healthy church. They came behind in no gift. (I Cor. 1 :7) He was commending them for. it. Everyone of them had a gift. If you have a church like that then you may use Paul's regulator. In order to do all things unto edifying they must interpret their tongues when they are speaking to people in tongues and instructing them (verse 5). They must prophesy. In order to edify they must first speak in tongues at home to edify themselves, and then use their gifts after they arrived at church. It certainly does not edify a church to fight gifts. This did not say all of them had a gift except the song leader, the special singer, or old Sister Whoopendiddle. They all had something. They did not have to wait and pray and beg. They did not wait for the preacher to have a nervous breakdown trying to get them to pray through. They did not sit to be entertained. The preacher did not go on with the service and refuse to give any of them a chance to do anything in the service. He did not specialize on being an orator. They all had something when they arrived at church. They all had a chance to obey the Lord. It's no wonder that some people do not bring anything to church; they never get a chance to use what they have! Therefore, the secrets of people's hearts are not made manifest. They don't fall down and repent, but go away empty hearted. VERSE 27 speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret." How many times is cne allowed to speak with tongues in a single service? That all depends on how the Lord is leading in the service. I have seen services that all of the people were singing, or praying, or praising God in tongues. Maybe all along through the service someone may be singing
"If any man

VERSE 26 "How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, everyone of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath

or praying in tongues in a low tone of voice in order not to disturb the service. How many messages is one allowed to give in tongues in one service? That depends on how long the service is in many cases, I have seen services about eight hours long. We started service as 2 :00 o'clock one Sunday afternoon. The best I remember, it lasted until about 2 :00 o'clock in the morning. That service was about twelve hours long. I think there was one message given out in tongues in the early part of the service, telling that God was going to do something wonderful. About 6 :00 o'clock thai evening a lady was raised from the dead; that is, we thought she was dead. Her people were making arrangement.s to send after her folks. Then in the latter part of the service a lady, who had just come to church, and did not know how many messages had been given out, spoke in tongues and told how God had even raised the dead in cur midst. Then near midnight a message was given which caused people to give their hearts to God. Usually, in an ordinary service not over one message is given in tongues. The subject may be on the soon coming of the Lord; it may be instructing the saints how to obey the Lord; or it may be a warning to the unsaved. Unless the service is unusually long, one message is usually all the Holy Spirit has us to speak with tongues. Does the Bible teach for us not to give out over three messages in tongues ill one service? No, we do not find that anywhere in the Bible; but it stands to reason that the Holy Spirit would not give many messages in one service, just as He would not move on a preacher to preach several messages in his own language. I have seen preachers preach more than one message in one service. I have seen people give out more than one message in tongues in one service. The same Spirit anoints them both to speak, whether the message is brought in an unknown tongue, or the tongues you cap understand. Since the Lord is still sovereign He can do what He wants to do. How many times is one allowed to speak with tongues in one service? The Bible does not say. That is up to the Holy Spirit. 22

We cannot instruct the Holy Spirit what to do. He tells us what to do. Rev. David Burris, the District Superintendent of Arkansas for twenty-one years, tells us that he was in a glorious service when people spoke in tongues thirty times during that service. Each time someone spoke in tongues someone came to the altar. There were exactly thirty people saved that night. Who can instruct the Lord? How would you know when to stop people from speaking with tongues? Is there a certain amount of times they should speak? We don't worry nearly as much about stopping them as we do getting them started. That should be our main concern. The flesh does not like to praise the Lord. The flesh wants to resist the Spirit and be stubborn with the Lord. However, we have seen over-zealous people who, after the Lord was through with them, keep trying to speak with tongues. This might be after they had spoken one time or ten times. I have also seen preachers who kept trying to preach after the Lord lifts His anointing. They all operate with the same Spirit. The preacher and the one who speaks with tongues both should stop when the anointing lifts. Sometimes they keep on in their own spirit. The Lord understands. He will bless in spite of our mistakes. If an honest person makes a mistake and speaks in tongues after the anointing leaves we should be patient with him and not embarrass him publicly. A man asked me. how would I know when to stop someone from speaking if there was not a certain number of times he should speak. I asked him how he would stop a man, who was out of order, who spoke only once or twice. What does the verse in I Corinthians 14 :27 mean, which says, "If any man speak in an unknown tongue. let it be by twe, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret"? It means what Verse 29 does as far as the number of speakers, t he one difference is that Verse 27 is sneaking of a message in tongues while Verse 29 is speaking of a message in our own language. Verse 27 says let two or three speak with tongues, and one interpret. 23

Verse 29 says let two or three prophets speak and one judge. How do we know that Verse 27 means that two or three people should speak? . It could not mean any other thing. We know that this is not talking about the number of messages, for a message is not given out by a message. They are given out by people. Paul said, "Let it be BY two, or at the most by three." We can also look at other translations to see how it reads. Moffatt's translation reads: "As for speaking in a 'tcngue', let only two or at most three speak at one meeting, and that in turn. Also let someone interpret." Phillip's translation says, "If the question of speaking with a 'tongue' arises, confine the speaking to two or three at the most and have someone to interpret what is said." Here is how it reads in Jamison, Fausset, Brown: "Not more than two or three might speak with tongues at eac h service." Listen to Weymouth: "If there is speaking in a tongue, only two at the most three, should speak, one at a time, and one should interpret." Burkley: "If someone speaks in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most three, each in turn, and let one give an interpretation." Matthew Henry's Commentary: "As to speaking in an unknown tongue he orders that no more than two or three should do it in one meeting, and this not altogether, but successively, one after another." Rev. Harold Horton, who wrote a very fine book on "The Gifts of the Spirit," says, "The words 'two' and 'three' refer to different speakers, and not two or three fragments of one message by the same speaker." If you want more information read The Pulpit Commentary, and most any commentary you pick un. Read books written by good men, as Donald Gee, Carl Brumback, Smith Wig'glesworth, and scores of others. One good man asked, "How will we know how to ston the people if we can't stop them at three utterances?" Don't try to stop them unless they are out of order; then do it in the same way had they only spoken once.

I am only saying this: You have no more Scripture for stopping anyone at three utterances than you do for stopping at two or four. What does the words "by course" mean? That means in turn. It means, piece, portion, or allotment. Webster says it may mean "a succession; series; as, a course of lectures." For example: I saw a man and his wife, who came from Africa over to the United States, who preached a message one night in the African language. It took them about forty minutes to preach that message. They preached one message, but it was in about seventy courses. She would preach a few sentences in African language; then she would stop and let him tell us what it meant. Then she would speak some more. That was the way the people spoke in unknown tongues in the Early Church. Someone spoke in an unknown tongue a sentence or two. Then he would stop and let someone interpret it. Then he would speak again. Maybe he spoke fifty courses in preaching one message in tongues. He spoke it in courses for the convenience of the people. Not long ago the king from Arabia came to Dallas. The paper told how he was accepted in the best hotel in town. His dinner was served in seven courses. Just as he had a seven-course dinner, we may have a sevencourse message in church in unknown tongues. In the Bible days the people sang by course. (Ezra 3 :11) One would sing one part; then another would sing a part. King David's choir practiced doing that. People could hear his high-sounding cymbals for miles away. One man would sing, "0 give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good." Some more would say, "For his mercy endureth forever." Just as more than one of them could have a part in singing by course; so two or three may have a part in bringing a message by course. (l Cor, 14 :27) Suppose a fourth man would join in, giving out a message and speaking with tongues; is he out of order? It is not a crime. It may be an honest mistake. But it is better if he will let the three who started to give out that message go ahead and speak. It keeps down confusion where there are hundreds of zealous people in the church. But in most of the churches our main

25

24

trouble is getting even two or three willing to obey God, face opposition. and be used of the Lord: Suppose John, Elizabeth, and Jane. are being used of the Lord in giving out a message l.n tongues. John gives out two courses and quits. Jane give out a cours~; then Elizabeth gives out a course. Suppose the Lord !s not through with the message. Elizabeth had to slip out and go home. Jane had to run to the nursery to ~er baby. John lost the anointing while he was looking for a song. If the Lord wants to finish the message and tells me to give out a course. He can do as He wants to. I would not be to blame. One of the first three who spoke would be to blame for not keeping the anointing. Does not the term "any man" mean that only one man is speaking? No, it does not. It means plural or singular. It is an indefinite noun. It means some or any, a party or whosoever. It comes from the Greek word "Oudis." Feminine is included. It may mean man or woman. It is neuter gender. It would be very simple if we would just see how Paul used the same expression "any man" in this same letter to the Corinthians. "If any man defile the temple of God, him shall Gael destroy. (I Cor. 10:17) This can be one man or any amount of men, or women. "If any man that is called a brother be a fornicator. or covetous . . . with such an one no not to eat" (l Cor. 5 :11) This could include man or woman, one or more. "But if any man love God, the same is known of him." (8 :3) This can mean one or many. "But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin." This may mean one man or any amount of men. "But if any man say unto you, this is offered in sacrifice unto idols ... " (10 :28) This includes just anyone if you will read the context. "If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be accursed." I Cor. 16 :22) We will all agree that this would include man or

woman, one or more. "But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant." (14-38) All the above quotations are found in the same letter that contains I Corinthians 14 :27, written by the same man, Paul. This letter was not even divided into chapters and verses at that time. In every instance we see that the term "any man" means man or men. You can trace this term through the Bible where it is used in scores of places. It means one or many. So Paul was saying, "If people speak with tongues, let it be by two or by the most by three." Suppose that someone speaks with tongues, the whole message in one course? I had that experience in a church during a revival. It was causing confusion. The church did not have judges appointed. So I asked God for a word of wisdom what to do. I did not feel like doing anything at all about it. Then one night after service the man came to me privately (God must have sent him). He asked me if he was in order speaking with tongues. Then I had a chance to talk with him, he and I alone, as the Bible instructs. (Matt. 18 :15) I told him to stop about half a minute or so and give someone a chance to interpret. From then on he did that, and made a wonderful worker for God. We had a great revival. Hundreds received the Holy Ghost. Hundreds received forgiveness of sins. Suppose you are in a church that believes that it is wrong to speak with tongues over three times in one service? I had that experience. Privately I told the pastor, in a morning prayer meeting, where about a dozen people were gathered together in prayer. He told me to teach it to those people. N early a hundred people had already received the Holy Ghost. Things were going well. Then public opinion caused that dear pastor to change his mind and teach that it was wrong to speak in tongues the fourth time. I asked the Lord what to do. In a dream he told me to quietly leave the state, which I did. In the next state some high church officials tried to send me back to teach the right way, but I would not be persuaded to go back and cause enemies. 27

26

Would God always tell you to leave a church or a country where Full Gospel people do not see the tr~th, but believe that people must be stopped the fourth time they speak with tongues? Not every time. One time I was in a very fine church that had been taught that the fourth time to sneak with tongues was wrong. Hundreds of people had been saved and hundreds of people had already received the Holy Ghost. Hundreds of people had been healed of lameness, deafness, and blindness and such. One night the fine pastor, being very tired. stayed at home to do some work which he needed to do. It so happened that we had a glorious service that night. Many people were delivered. But I could hardly preach in my own language. I spoke with tongues. Many fine people were saved. But I did yield to God and speak the fourth time. The next day the pastor very gracefully came to me privately and told me that he was told that I spoke the fourth time in tongues. He said that he had been taught that only three utterances should be allowed in one service. The revival was so wonderful. Souls were so precious. I did not argue with that man of God. I did not try to prove my point. I asked God for a word of wisdom. He told me to stay. People kept being saved and filled. There remained a most wonderful Spirit in that meeting. One night later on God moved on me to give out a message in tongues. To my surprise He led me to do this: I spoke two courses, about five minutes each and interpreted them. There was one message in the two courses. We had just as much results. People were happy, although I spoke with tongues just as much as I did the other time, but not as many fragments of one message. God loved those precious people. He loved me. So He arranged it so we worked together without any friction. Must there be a certain one to interpret? We do not seevthat there must be an "official interpreter," or a certain one to interpret in every service. That Verse 27 means to "let someone interpret." It is good to let an elder, or someone who is experienced go ahead and interpret in the main services.

I know one pastor, with a big church, who was confronted with a problem: He had six women who had the gift of interpretation, who wanted to interpret each service. After praying, God gave him a word of wisdom and told him what to do. At the beginning of each service he appointed a certain sister to keep the anointing to interpret in that service. The next time he would change to another. It worked perfectly. I don't see any difference in doing that than calling on a certain preacher to preach. or a certain man to pray for the sick in a given service. No preacher is forced to wait for a certain person called an official interpreter" to come to church before a message in tongues can be interpreted. The one who speaks in tongues may interpret if it becomes necessary (Verse 13). VERSE 28 "But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in 1 he church: and let him speak to himself and t~) God." If he is speaking he is not keeping silence. Many people only quote the first part of this verse. trying to make it mean for him to keep silence. If no one interprets your message, and if you do not have the interpretation yourself, then there are tW0 things you must do, or two ways you may speak with tongues: Instead of trying to instruct people in tonzues you may (1) pray in tongues. and you may (2) praise God in tonzues, just so vou don't disturb the service. You will get as much results. many times, if you nraise God in a whisper while service is going on. The Holy Ghost does not interrupt Himself. How do you sneak to God in tongues? Verse 2 tells you nlainlv.' "For he that sneaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men. but unto God." How do you speak to yourself in tongues? Read i L "And he not drunk with wine. wherein is excess : but. BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT: Sneaking to yourself in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs ... " (Eph. 5 :18-19) They were drunk at Pentecost, but not with wine. They were so filled with the Spirit that they acted to natural men like they were drunk! When you are filled

28

29

with the Spirit ,

OU may speik to yourself in "spiritual songs," Paul said 1hat when you sing in the Spirit no one can understand you, It is unknown to you, (Verses 14 to 16) You sa," that this means that you sing in your own lang uatre under 1 he anointing, No. that is what Paul means when he savs, psalms, and hymns, They are to be under the anointing. But to sing in the Spirit you sing so no one can understand You. VERSE 29 AND 30 "Let the prophets speak two or three. and let the other judge." "If a nv th ing he revealed to another that sitteth bv, let the first holrl his peace." Verso 29 means the same thing as Verse 27 as far as the number of speakers is concerned. Two or three people should speak in tongues and one must interpret. Two or three prophets should speak and one judge. VERSE 31 "For ye mav all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all be comforted." Some of the people thought that perhaps Moses would be jealous because two men prophesied in the camp. But Moses said that he wished that all of God's people were prophets and God would put His Spirit upon them. (Num. 11 :29) People seemed surprised because Saul, direct from the plow-handles, prophesied. God says all of His people may prophesy, just so it is clone" one bv one. That rules out the fact that we give people all oyer the house permission to all get up and speak for God at one time. In the Upper Room they all spoke in tongues at once, but when it came to instructing people, only Peter .spoke. What is the difference in these two verses? Verse 31 says only two or three prophets may speak. Verse 32 says all of God's people may prophesy. The prophets have a ministerial gift (Eph. 4) and hold the office of a prophet. Any member of the church may prophesy, which is a spiritual gift. (I Cor. 12) VERSE 32 "And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets." Some folk think this means that you can turn the gifts on and off at will and use them anytime you want to. But in the Bible days the gifts used the people 30

instead of the people using the gifts. The spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets, but the Spirit of God is not subject to the prophets. There are a few people who are reallv sincere. who really are trying to do something for God. 'When they feel the anointing they immediately try to give out a message. Maybe the Lord is anointing a man to preach, to work miracles, or to heal the sick. Mavbe the gift of the word of wisdom is in operation. Mavbe the altar call is being made. These honest, sincere people. when they feel the anointing. do not realize the Lord is manifesting another gift. So they try to give out a message. They start to prav in tongues. These people make the best of Christians after they sneak in tonzucs at home enough to edify themselves. so they will know how to yield to tongues at church. They just need to learn that the Lord does not want to give out a message in, tongues in every service. Sometimes He wants to manifest the gift of healing or some other gift. VERSE 33 "For' God is not the author of confusion, but of peace. as in all churches of the saints." Tf ali prophesy at once, or if three try to interpret at once; if three people give out 11 message in tongues at one time; if three people try to preach at one time; if people' will do nothing but try to give messages in tongues when God is manifesting the gifts of healing. the service might end up in confusion. But I know of no one in our day who tries t.o do that. God is the author of peace; The peace of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holv Ghost. VERSES 34 TO 39 These verses have to do with women speaking in the church+It seems that there was a certain restriction on women speaking in the early church. But God plainly said that in our day. just before the coming of the Lord, just before the moon is turned to blood. that the women and the girls would be prophesv ing. That is one of the signs, along with tongues, that judgment is soon to fall on this sin-cursed world. (Acts 2 :15-20) VERSE 39 "Wherefore, brethren, covet to nrophesv, and FORBID NOT TO SPEAK WITH TONGUES." Do you obey these commandments? Do you criticize prophesying cr do you covet prophesy? Rebellion is 31

as the sin of witchcraft and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. (I Sam. 15 :23) Paul, in the whole chapter, did not once forbid people to speak with tongues. He only regulated tongues, proving that he wanted them to continue speaking. If you forbid people to speak with tongues in your church, you are breaking a commandment. VERSE 40 "LET ALL THINGS BE DONE decently and in order." Brother if the Holy Ghost does it, regardless if it is speaking with tongues, interpreting, or prophesying, it is always decent and in order. Many people believe in the last part of this verse, but they do not believe in the first part of it, which says, "Let all things be done." If all things are done to edifying then the sinner will fall down and report that God is in you of a truth, because the secrets of his heart are made manifest. Paul regulates speaking to people in tongues. It is alright to regulate if you have something to regulate. But some people have the horse ridden to death, almost. The horse has not been fed. You can count every rib. Paul nowhere discourages praying in tongues, which builds up your faith and brings to pass the will of God in your life. Even if you do not give messages in tongues, let me encourage everyone of you to stay before God until the Holy Ghost intercedes through you in a heavenly language, and brings your loved ones to God! There are people now in hell that you could have won to God had you had this wonderful gift that prays through you and builds up your most holy faith. He is near you now! Reach out and receive the Holy Ghost; then let Him do his office work 0{ intercession through your life. This is how to have a revival in our time: Everywhere I have gone, when the people let the Holy Spirit have His way, a revival was the result. Great numbers were saved, filled with the Spirit and healed. He is ever present to do the work if He is not resisted or grieved. Creeds, tradition, and man-made forms hinder the Holy Spirit from bringing a revival. "Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord."
