American Foreign Policy This course is a seminar that encourages reading, writing, analytical thinking, and discussion. The concepts of national interest, national security, regional security, international involvement and isolationism are to be analyzed and their implications for the U.S. foreign policy considered. The policymaking process and the influences that impact upon it, the manner in which objectives may evolve, and the means by which foreign policy is implemented are the objectives of this course. Required Reading: John Stoessinger, Crusaders And Pragmatists: Movers of Modern American Foreign Policy. Joyce P. Kaufman, A Concise History of U.S. Foreign Policy. Suggested Reading: Hans J. Morgenthau, Politics Among Nations: The Struggle for Power and Peace, Brief Edition, Revised by Kenneth W. Thompson. John G. Stoessinger, Why Nations Go to War. Expectations: Attendance is essential as class participation is an important determinant in evaluation. Participation in class discussions, analysis of reading assignments and relevant current events, willingness to express a position and accept challenges, readiness to present sensible arguments, are indicative of a participant’s command of the assigned readings. Suggested readings are highly recommended for students who may not have had courses in international politics, or are interested in the current foreign policy challenges of the United States. Keeping up with the news, reading a good newspaper daily, and browsing through scholarly journals enhance thoughtful analysis. Intellectual curiosity is the basic requirement for learning. It is therefore expected and appreciated. Grading: Evaluation of students will be based on class participation, a take-home exam, and a final test. Class participation will determine 25 percent of the grade, take-home exam 40 percent, and the final test 35 percent. Please note that class participation requires physical presence in the classroom, as well as informed engagement in discussion.
