1 Turning summer travel daydreams

Turning summer travel daydreams into reality

Are you daydreaming about your summer vacation? Do you entertain visions of where youll go, what youll do, and how much fun or relaxation youll enjoy? To make those dreams come true, now is a good time to start making your travel arrangements. As the saying goes, the early bird gets the worm or in this case better availability and fringe benefits, as well as better rates for airline tickets and hotels. If travel is in your budget, but you wait too long, youre likely to face already filled or budget-breaking flights, overbooked hotels and a mad dash to get your logistics in place. Many of our members have flight benefits (through an association with United Airlines or US Airways) and may choose to wait until the last minute for a chance to fly standby. But for everyone else, its best to start booking several months in advance and to be flexible, according to travel experts. Thats because many airlines, hotels and resorts offer perks and early bird rates if you lock in your reservations early on. And, if youre flexible with your itinerary, you can experiment with dates and travel times to find the least expensive option. Here are some tips: Create a budget. To help you spend only what you want to spend on your vacation, create a clear budget. Start with the total you are comfortable spending and break down the total into items, such as meals, transportation, accommodations, tips, souvenirs and fun activities. Go online to explore your options. Check out the big three travel sites: Orbitz, Expedia and Travelocity for airline tickets, hotels and rental cars. Youll find prices vary considerably if you plug in different days and times within a three-day range. Also, prices often vary among these sites, based on the deals each has arranged with different vendors. Other sites, such as Kayak, dont sell tickets online but compile information from various other websites and enable you to compare, at a glance, different offers. Meanwhile, if youre undecided where to travel, sign up for the free Travelzoo Top 20 newsletter. Then, youll get each weeks best travel package deals sent to your email address. Compare the amenities among hotels. Look for free breakfasts, free pool and gym access and other incentives, such as free upgrades. Also, make sure the location is desirable and check how much extras will cost you, such as transportation from the airport, resort fees, parking and Internet access. Consider insurance. Do you have car rental insurance as a benefit of your auto policy or credit card? If so, avoid paying for any duplicate insurance on a rental car. Also, if you are paying a hefty price for the trip, consider travel insurance so you wont be left holding the financial bag if you cant take the trip because of illness or an emergency. Research your destination and whats happening when youll be there. Go to the bookstore or your library to get travel guides, maps and DVDs. Go online to find events and activities that will occur during your visit, great restaurants and must-go-to attractions, such as historical sites, museums or parks.
