Counties seek compensation for IPL

Sport Lucrative offers from cash-rich IPL franchises may not swell the coffers of England captain Kevin Pietersen and
all-rounder Andrew Flintoff as the players would have to pay from their pockets to their respective counties,
who are demanding compensation to make up for their absence. Though IPL doesn’t have any provision to pay
compensation by a franchise for buying a player, Hampshire and Lancashire have made it clear that the players
or the franchise will have to pay them.

F
or long, velvet has been dis-
missed as what tacky upholstery in
wannabe Oriental or Arabian settings is
made of. Something you’re more likely to
find on the seat of an over-dressed taxi. It’s either
been too “garish” or very little “sophisticated”. The
fabric has “no flow, complements no look and makes the
wearer look extremely claustrophobic” are a few allega-
tions so far levelled against it.
Suddenly, it’s in use left, right, centre, up and down. The
very factors that have always worked against it have been
turned around. Using it in total or in combination with a variety
of contradictory fabrics, thereby adding that depth in texture,
designers worldwide have suddenly realised its potential.
Taking its use to an extreme, men’s jackets were tailored in mauve
velvet in Giorgio Armani’s spring/summer 2009 collection that
showed at Milan. Designer Matthew Williamson, who recently
entered into a tie-up with retail chain H&M, made an appear-
ance at the British Fashion Awards dressed in a brown velvet
suit. So did actress Rosamund Pike in an indigo velvet bol-
ero. Marc Jacobs’ much-acclaimed ready-to-wear show in
Paris for Louis Vuitton combined velvet with a variety of
fabrics like chiffon and silk.
In India, designers Kiran Uttam Ghosh and Rohit Bal have
been using it quite frequently, too, as seen during the
Chivas in Fashion 08 shows in Kolkata and New Delhi,
respectively.
The recent popularity of anarkalis and Mughal-
style clothing has, perhaps, contributed to its
increased importance and usage.
Instead of a head-to-toe velvet look,
we recommend using only one velvet
piece at a time; say a jacket, a skirt, top
or a trouser. Even if you are going full vel-
vet, break the monotony with a nice
brooch or belt. This way, you won’t
look like a gaudy divan. ■

it has extended to women’s and

Ghilli goes to Bollywood
After the superhit Ghajini, it’s now the turn of
blockbuster Ghilli. The new is that Ghilli
featuring Vijay, Trisha and Prakash Raj in lead
roles, will be remade in Hindi. Apparently, the
reason for the remake is the hit song ‘Appadi
podu’. The Ghilli mania started with a
commercial video showing Abhishek Bachchan
dancing for the song. Later, the song was
popularised in North through reality dance
shows. Though the cast and crew of the film
are yet to be finalised, Internet buzzes say that
Deepika Padukone might don Trisha’s role.

Lucky poles Word’s worth
A Polish couple had a lucky escape from a "Retcon" (ret-kahn) an often-condemned practice of
horrific crash when they popped to the writers for television and other serial stories, such as
kitchen to make a cup of tea during a TV comic books, in which they mention previously unknown
break - avoiding a lorry which had rammed events in order to justify current plot points. The word is
