FIRST SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY THE BAPTISM OF OUR LORD

AS WE GATHER
"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
Lord." (Romans 6:23) This free gift of God takes us from certain death to a life that never ends. For many of us the gift was given to us in the water and Word of Holy Baptism when we were infants. For others this gift came to us later in life after hearing God's Word and being baptized. We remember Jesus being baptized and beginning His journey that took Him to death on the cross and a place in a grave before He came back to life on that first Easter, setting the pattern for resurrection given to all who follow Him. As the apostle Paul reminds us in our Epistle reading today, "We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life." (Romans 6:4)

+ PREPARATION + Spirit Song O let the Son of God enfold You With His Spirit and His loveLet Him fill your heart and satisfy your soul O let Him have those things that hold You And His Spirit like a dove Will descend upon your life And make you whole (chorus) Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill Your Lambs Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill Your Lambs O come and sing this song with gladness As your hearts are filled with joy Lift your hands in sweet surrender To His name

O give Him all your tears and sadness Give Him all your years of pain And you'll enter into life In Jesus' name

INVOCATION (stand)
Pastor: Whether as infants or later in life, our lives as Christians have their source in the Word of God as it is proclaimed and as it is given in Holy Baptism. People: Here in the water God Himself reached across time and space to claim us for Himself and to place on us His very own name. We are baptized. Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. We worship in the name of the One who baptized us and made us His children.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

Pastor: The Christian life is forever a return to baptism. People: Daily we are called to die to sin and rise to new life in Jesus Christ. Pastor: We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, People: we too might walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4 Pastor: As baptized believers, Christ sends us into our everyday callings to serve Him by loving our neighbor. People: As fathers and mothers, husbands and wives, parents and children, teachers and students, employers and employees, in every walk of life we are called to be Christ's man, Christ's woman, Christ's child, each in our own calling. Pastor: Christ gave Himself for us on the cross. People: Under His cross, we are called to give ourselves in love for others.

Pastor: Yet, even as we say it, our words accuse us, People: for we know we have often failed to love as we are called. Pastor: We return to our Baptism to drown the sinful nature by confessing: All: O Almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess to You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your punishment now and forever. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor sinful being. Pastor: Hear God's own promise as from Christ Himself and receive the forgiveness He won for you by His passion, death, and resurrection. By the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, I, a called and ordained servant of Christ, the living Word, annouce that forgiveness of all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen.

Palm 29 Give glory and honour and power and authority to the name of the LORD, all you children of God! Worship the LORD in holy awe; bow down in the overwhelming presence of our God. Listen to the presence of the LORD over the waters; hear the majesty of the name of the LORD; its power and authority above the roar of the flood. Cedar panels in the Temple splinter at the voice of the LORD, lightning flashes rip open the sky; animals give birth before their time, and the earth trembles. A shout of "Glory!" rises to the LORD enthroned in splendour. May the LORD give protection and blessing and life for ever
For use in worship, with acknowledgement.(c)Jeff Shrowder 2003.

+ WORD + OLD TESTAMENT

Isaiah 42
1 The Servant of the LORD

1 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations.
4

2 He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. 3 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; 4 he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his teaching the islands will put their hope. 5 This is what God the LORD says the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out, who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it: 6 I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, 7 to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness. 8 I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols. 9 See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE

Acts 19
Paul in Ephesus 1 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2 and asked them, Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? They answered, No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit. 3 So Paul asked, Then what baptism did you receive? Johns baptism, they replied. 4 Paul said, Johns baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus. 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

VERSE
HOLY SPIRIT, living Breath of God, Breathe new life into my willing soul. Bring the presence of the risen Lord To renew my heart and make me whole. Cause your word to come alive in me; Give me faith for what I cannot see; Give me passion for your purity; Holy Spirit, breathe new life in me. Holy Spirit, come abide within, May your joy be seen in all I do. Love enough to cover every sin In each thought and word and attitude: Kindness to the greatest and the least, Gentleness that sows the path of peace. Turn my strivings into works of grace; Breath of God, show Christ in all I do. Holy Spirit, from creation's birth, Giving life to all that God has made.

Show your power once again on earth Cause your church to hunger for your ways. May the fragrance of our prayers arise; Lead us on the road of sacrifice, That in unity the face of Christ May be clear for all the world to see.

GOSPEL

Mark 1:4-11
New International Version (NIV) 4 And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camels hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And this was his message: After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. The Baptism and Testing of Jesus 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.

Pastor: This is the Gospel of our Lord People: Praise to You, O Christ!

OFFERING (you may sit)

OFFERTORY C*:Let the vineyards be fruitful, Lord, and fill to the brim our cup of blessing. Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown that we may be fed with the bread of life. Gather the hopes and dreams of all; unite them with the prayers we offer now. Grace our table with your presence, and give us a foretaste of the feast to come. PREFACE
Pastor: The Lord is among us. All: We praise Him for His gracious presence. Pastor: We thank Him for His love. All: We rejoice that He has come to be with us. Pastor: It is good to thank and praise our God today and all days, but this day we especially remember that the very Word of God became flesh in Jesus Christ to dwell among us. For this we join with all the hosts of heaven in declaring our adoration:

SANCTUS *Holy, holy , holy Lord, God of powr and might; Heavn and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: "Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me." In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He
10

had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: "Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24; Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians
11:23-25

PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST Pastor: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. People: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Pastor: O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: LORD'S PRAYER DISTRIBUTION All who are thirsty

Corinthians 12:12-13

People: But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift.
Ephesians 4:4-7

Pastor: In Baptism God has given you real life, your life hid with Christ in God: People: I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me.
