Manistee High School students
take part in Youth in Government
By KEN GRABOWSKI
Staff Writer
LANSING — The look of pride on
Manistee High School teacher/Youth in
Government adviser Stacey Andrews-
Ramsey’s face spoke volumes as she lis-
tened to her students recall the time they
spent at the 2012 conference in Lansing.
Andrews-Ramsey knew that the expe-
rience is one that helps turn today’s stu-
dents into tomorrow’s leaders. A total of
15 students from Manistee High School
took part in Youth In Government this
year, and she said this talented group
turned quite a few heads in Lansing.
“This is one of the largest groups we
have had in years,” Andrews-Ramsey
said. “It is a lot more fun when this many
go, but for me it makes it harder to keep
track of where they all are because they
are so active. Manistee is well-known
down there for what we do.”
Attending the conference this year
from Manistee High School were Destiny
Blake, Cameron Blevins, Chris Blevins,
Michael Bond, Sarah Bottrell, McKenna
Bramble, Hannah Davis, Annie DeVoe,
Emma Hornkohl, Jordan MacArthur,
Morgan Ott, Abigale Racine, Michael
Stypa, Jessie Switalski and Jenna Vincent.
More than 900 students from all over
Michigan attended Youth in Government
this year, making it the largest turnout
ever. Students hold offices in several dif-
ferent House, Senate and other govern-
ment offices, doing the tasks that are
normally performed by those elected offi-
Destiny Blake served as com-
mittee clerk in the Green House of
Representatives.
The entire Manistee Youth in Government group dress up for the big banquet and
dance that was held during their stay in Lansing.

cials. They were broken up
into the white, red and blue
House and Senates this
year and the learning expe-
rience was priceless for the
students.
“I was part of the Red
House of Representatives
and we debated bills and
passed amendments that
would eventually move
on to the Red Senate,”
Bramble said. “It was defi-
nitely an interesting expe-
rience. It showed me how
much goes into passing
a bill, and gave me a real
appreciation for our repre-
sentatives’ jobs.”
Fellow Youth in
Government student
Michael Stypa agreed that
it showed him how hard
the legislators work. He
also added they had the
opportunity to meet with
101st State Rep. Ray Franz,
R-Onekama, while they
were in Lansing.
“We had meetings that
started at 8 a.m. and we
would go all day with a
one-hour break until 5
p.m.,” Stypa said. “Rep.
Franz talked about what
kind of bills that were
being discussed, and just
gave us a real good insight
into what was happening at
the capitol.”
Stypa was a com-
mittee chair and served
in the White House of
Representatives. He said
being on the committee
gave him a keen insight
into what transpired in get-
ting a bill out on the House
floor for consideration.
“We would be in a small
group of seven to 15 peo-
ple, and we would be the
ones that first choose the
bills that get passed on to
the House and the Senate.
After that, I moved back
into the House where we
would debate bills and pass
them on to the senate.”
Jordan MacArthur was
a step up the ladder being a
member of the Blue Senate.
He commented on how it
was interesting to watch
the process of sending the
bills on to the governor for
her signature.
What impressed
him about Youth in
Government was the way
everyone was willing to dis-
cuss the issues. It was an
experience that led to him
making many new friends
along the way.
“You could pretty much
walk into any room that
you wanted if the door was
open, and everyone talked
to each other,” MacArthur
said. “I actually have 10
to 15 phone numbers of
people I met down there,
so it was pretty fun.”
Bramble added that

Lansing — It is spring-
time, and today animal
health officials at the
Michigan Department
of Agriculture and Rural
Development (MDARD)
are reminding Michigan
owners that vaccinating
pets and livestock protects
them from diseases, even
if they are exposed to an
infected animal or other
vector of disease transmis-
sion such as mosquitos
and ticks.
“Vaccinating, deworm-
ing, and routine animal
health activities should
occur in the spring before
moving to sales, exhibi-
tions, or even before going
on vacation,” said State
Veterinarian Dr. Steven
Halstead. “State law
also requires all dogs six
months and older to be
licensed; to get a license,
an owner must show proof
that a veterinarian has
vaccinated the dog against
rabies, and that the vac-
cine is current. Each year
we remind animal owners
of the importance of vac-
cinating, which not only
protects the pet, but also
the food-animal industry.”
Core vaccines are
recommended for most
pets. Additional “non-
core vaccines” (e.g., feline
leukemia, canine kennel
cough and other vaccines)
may be appropriate if the
animals are going to pet
care facilities, kennels,
shows where they will be
co-mingling. Additionally,
pet and livestock owners
are encouraged to have
their veterinarian check
for internal parasites and
heartworms.
MDARD recommends
owners speak with their
private veterinarian
regarding the following
vaccinations:
For dogs:
nrabies
ncanine distemper,
nparvovirus, and
nadenovirus.
In addition, owners
should have the dogs
checked for heartworm
and intestinal parasites.
Some veterinarians also
recommend vaccination
against leptospirosis and
treatment to prevent Lyme
disease.
Cats:
nrabies,
nherpes virus,
ncalicivirus, and
npanleukopenia.
Horses: MDARD man-
dates Equine infectious
anemia (EIA) testing
if traveling to a public
event, as part of a sale,
or importing a horse into
Michigan from another
state; and owners should
talk to their veterinarian
about the following vac-
cines:
nTetanus toxoid
nrabies
nEastern, and
Western Equine
Encephalitis
nWest Nile Virus
nRhinopneumonitis
(EHV-1 and EHV-4)
Horse owners should
prepare to follow these
tips to prevent mosquito-
borne illness:
Vaccinate your horses.
Inexpensive vaccines for
EEE and WNV are readily
available and should be
repeated at least annually.
It is never too late to vac-
cinate horses. Talk to your
veterinarian for details.
nUse approved insect
repellants to protect
horses.
nIf possible, put
horses in stables, stalls,
or barns during the prime
mosquito exposure hours
of dusk and dawn.
nEliminate standing
water, and drain troughs
and buckets at least two
times a week.
Sheep and goats:
nCD-T toxoid pro-
vides three-way protection
against enterotoxemia
(overeating disease)
caused by Clostridium
perfringins types C and
D and tetanus (lockjaw)
caused by Clostridium
tetani.
nThe large animal
rabies vaccine is approved
for use in sheep. No
rabies vaccine is currently
licensed for goats.
Cattle:
nInfectious bovine
rhinotracheitis (commonly
called IBR)
nBovine Viral
Diarrhea, PI3, BRSV
(viruses causing pneumo-
nia/sickness)
nLeptospirosis (5-
Way)
nVibriosis
nCalfhood vaccination
for Brucellosis
nBovine Tuberculosis
testing in the Modified
Accredited Area (contact
MDARD for additional
information)

proved to be an interest-
ing aspect of Youth in
Government.
“It was nice as you
could talk to anyone about
any issues that were going
on or any bills that were
being debated in the sen-
ate,” Bramble said. “They
were really passionate
about politics for the state.
Sometimes people back
here might not keep up
with the issues that much,
but down there, they really
knew what was going on.
You could talk freely about
anything that was going
on.”
Blake was in the Green
House of Representatives,
and served as a commit-
tee clerk, recording what
transpired at the meetings.
“I wrote down the
amendments that were
being attached to bills in
our committee,” Blake
said.
Some of the hot top-
ics of discussion this year
were focused around gay
marriage and childhood
obesity. Bramble pointed
out how some things
discussed at Youth in
Government actually make
it into law.
“Last year the big issue
was bullying legislation,”
Bramble said.
Manistee’s Michael
Bond, who served in the
media, won a special honor
this year in producing the
best written story dur-
ing the conference. He
received an award for his
efforts. Other students
holding key positions were
Jenna Vincent who was a
committee chair and Annie
DeVoe who served as edi-
tor of the electronic press.
Although the confer-
ence took on the serious
aspect of dealing with
issues and debates, it also
had a fun side to it for the
students. One night, they
held a talent show where
students had the oppor-
tunity to take part, and
another night they had a
banquet and dance.
All of those who partici-
pated said they would rec-
ommend it to younger stu-
dents coming up and that
they gained confidence in
their ability to speak their
mind and before people.
It was an opportunity for
today’s students to take
the first step to becoming
tomorrow’s leaders.

Customer Testimonial
I have asked my customers what directory they rely
on, most answer PDS’s West Shore Book.
My ads have resulted in more calls and walk in business, especially
from the hotels and motels in the area, I also get compliments on the
layout of my ad and the ease of reading it.
I recommend the book for the great customer service. The staf is very
friendly and knowledgeable about small business and the problems
that we face.. It’s a local company, with local support, the jobs they
provide are Michigan based.
