BEAT LA: The Padres and Dodgers continue their four-game series to open the season tonight, with Cory Luebke and Chad Billingsley each taking the hill for their 2012 debuts...the four-game series marks the first of six matchups against the Dodgers, including a three-game set to begin the Padres first road trip (4/13-15)...the Dodgers next visit to Petco Park will be 5/16-17 for a twogame series. LAST TIME OUT: The Padres dropped the season opener yesterday afternoon, falling 5-3 to the Dodgers...Edinson Volquez was tagged with the loss after 5.0 innings of work during which he allowed three runs (two earned)...Cameron Maybin was the bright spot in the offense, collecting the club’s only multi-hit game...Maybin went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer...the blast bounced off the front of the third deck in the Western Metal Supply Co. building and was estimated at 445’...it ties for the seventh-longest home run in Petco Park history...prior to yesterday, the club had won seven of their last 10 home openers, including each of their last two. LEAVE IT TO THE LEFTY: Cory Luebke takes the hill tonight for his 2012 debut...he finished the 2011 campaign with a 6-10 record and 3.29 ERA (51 ER/139.2 IP) over 46 outings (17 starts)...the left-hander began the season making 29 relief appearances before moving to the starting rotation... as a starter, he went 5-8 with a 3.31 ERA (37 ER/100.2 IP) and a .218 opponent batting average... over the course of the season, he limited opponents to a .209 average overall, the fifth-best ever by a Padres pitcher with 100-or-more innings and the best ever by a Padres rookie...this offseason, the club rewarded his performance with a contract extension through 2015 with club options for 2016 and 2017...in four career appearances vs. the Dodgers (three starts), Luebke has posted a 3.09 ERA (8 ER/23.1 IP) with 21 strikeouts and a .205 opponent average. ROSTER ROUND-UP: The Padres yesterday placed RHP Tim Stauffer on the 15-day disabled list and recalled RHP Brad Brach from Triple-A Tucson...in addition, the club announced on Tuesday that they had selected OF Jeremy Hermida from Triple-A Tucson, placed OF Carlos Quentin (right knee) and INF/OF Mark Kotsay (right calf) on the 15-day disabled list and optioned RHP Brad Brach and INF Everth Cabrera to Triple-A Tucson...the club’s Opening Day roster featured nine right-handed pitchers, three left-handed pitchers, two catchers, six infielders and five outfielders… six players made their first appearance on a Major League team’s Opening Day roster, including RHPs Anthony Bass and Brad Brach and INFs Yonder Alonso, Jesus Guzman and Andy Parrino… INF Logan Forsythe, who began the season on the disabled list, was also considered on an Opening Day roster for the first time in his career. WILLING AND ABLE: Will Venable hit .349 (22-for-63) this Spring with seven doubles and nine stolen bases…he led the squad in both stolen bases and doubles…his hit total ranked second on the team behind Yonder Alonso (24)…Venable posted a .417 on-base percentage and .460 slugging percentage for an .877 OPS this Spring. 11,000 PADRES: The Little League season has kicked off in San Diego, with players all over the county sporting their new Padres uniforms thanks to the club’s Youth Baseball Initiative...the program has supplied over 11,600 Little Leaguers with Padres uniforms, representing 20 different styles from throughout the club’s history. SPRING TRAINING RECAP: The Padres wrapped up Spring Training with a 20-16 record, ranking fourth in the Cactus League, second among National League clubs and first among their NL West rivals...the club finished the Spring slate by winning 17 of their final 26 games...at the conclusion of Spring Training, the Padres led all NL clubs in runs scored, home runs, batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage...they topped all Major League teams in slugging percentage and runs scored...leading the way were seven players on the current roster who finished the Spring with a batting average of .300 or better, including Nick Hundley (.432), Will Venable (.349), Kyle Blanks (.325), Chris Denorfia (.323), Yonder Alonso (.312), Jesus Guzman (.308) and Jeremy Hermida (.306). WHAT A RELIEF: The eight Padres relievers named to the club’s Opening Day roster combined to go 8-4 with a 3.69 ERA (35 ER/85.1 IP) this Spring...their performance was led by stellar Springs from RHP Andrew Cashner (10.0 IP) and LHP Joe Thatcher (9.1 IP), who each allowed just one run over the course of the Cactus League slate...the two relievers also averaged over a strikeout per inning pitched, with Cashner tallying 16 and Thatcher collecting 10.

PADRES COMMUNITY CALENDAR
Date 4/6 Details Orlando Hudson and the C.A.T.C.H. Foundation (Curing Autism Through Change and Hope) today hosted 40 autistic youth and their parents (from Pioneer Day School, National Foundation for Autism Research and the Autism Discovery Institute at Rady Children’s Hospital) for a “Day at the Park” at Petco Park. Activities included a mobile petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, and games. Orlando Hudson and the C.A.T.C.H. Foundation (Curing Autism Through Change and Hope) will host a pregame meet and greet for 100 autistic children and their families during batting practice. Luke Gregerson and Joe Thatcher will be signing autographs at Park at the Park pregame for Jr. Padres and kids 14 and younger.
