What is Social Media
• Online forms of communicating that any individual can employ, like: • Blogs, Twitter, and Facebook.

A few facts• 65% of online users use social networking sites • Most are young adult women 18-29 • NO significant differences in use of social networking sites based on race and ethnicity, household income, education level, lives in an urban, suburban, or rural environment. (Pew Internet & American Life Project, 8/26/11)

Mobile phones & Apps

Who monitors social media sites/text alerts?
• Varies by jurisdiction and agency
– Some agencies utilize their PIO- public information officer, others actual police, fire, or trained civilians

• MPD– combination of civilian employee’s and police that monitor and update twitter for 24/7 coverage – Civilian employee that updates Facebook for events & some crime alerts – Police update text alerts
