Sky is Over Serj Tankian

Emma Murphy Intro Strongly played repeated piano riff (Refer to Riff on score) On the 2nd repetition the vocal are added. Bar 5 is a variation on the riff, which leads into the verse. Verse 1 Lyrics start with backing vocals in a higher octave accompanied by the piano riff. In the 2nd half of the verse guitars and drums are added. Guitars are playing a sustained chord at the beginning of each bar. Quavers are being play on the high hat. Once the other instruments are added every second bar the semi quavers change to two quavers (Refer to riff variation on score) Bar 5 is used as a variation into the pre chorus Pre Chorus The piano is pulsing on the Bb major and C minor chords while guitar is picking strings. The drum has now changed to crotchets on the high hat. Bass is added, playing the root note of each bar. In the last bar of the pre chorus the guitar strums and the piano plays the Bb Major and C minor chords every quaver. With the increased rhythmic activity along with the crescendo from mf to f in the last bar it leads to the chorus. Chorus Vocals are harmonized on sky is over. The piano is playing arpeggios in the right hand with pulsing bass chords on the root note. Guitar is strumming the chords. Chords G minor, Eb Major, D Minor. There is a string instrument playing in the background of the second repetition increasing the activity. Bridge Vocals are syncopated. Piano is playing the riff with the quaver variation. There is now a prominent bass line and hardly any guitar except for two sustained notes distorted by the vibrato bar. Pre Chorus Repeated, expecting the chorus.

Piano Solo Riff (1.) Instead of the chorus, there is a sudden change with the piano playing a solo riff (Refer to Piano Solo Riff on score) (Riff because it continues as the other instruments are added). There are accented quavers on the first and third beat of each bar. This is created by left hand block chords, guitar chords, bass and bass drum, also the crash cymbal being hit and held, shortening the rhythm. (2.) The drums, guitar, bass and vocals all mimic the riff. The Drums are playing the rhythm on the tom toms/bass drums. The guitar is playing chords and the vocals are repeating la, la, la 2nd Bridge This section is a combination and variation of the pre chorus and part (2.) of the piano solo riff. In the vocals, Not even from the sky is repeated 4 times; on the first and second time the last note is descending whereas on the third and fourth time the last note is ascending which builds tension into the chorus. Chorus It is only vocals until the first Sky is over where the chorus proceeds normally. This chorus is repeated twice. On the second time the last line is repeated twice. The first time ascending to the 4th interval and the second time it foes to the 5th interval before falling back to the root note as the other instruments drop out. The piece finishes with a dense G minor chord in the bass of the piano.
